Mon, 29 Apr 2024 - 139 - SE 4 Ep 14 - Classic Album Feature - Clarence Gatemouth Brown - The Man
“I am an American world musician, Texas drive.” Brown has roots in the hard-swinging big-band blues ‘n’ boogie he recorded for Aladdin and Peacock in the 40s, but today his music is a kaleidoscope of western swing, Cajun, hard-core country, funk, rock, and jazz. His guitar style still echoes T-Bone Walker–even at its most emotive, it stays pristine and precise.

Mon, 15 Apr 2024 - 137 - SE 4 Ep 12 Classic Album Feature - John Mooney - Against The Wall
“Mooney is one of a handful of younger blues players who has forged his own style, a jarring juxtaposition of angular Delta guitar and funky New Orleans backbeats. He explores the dark sides of those traditions in Against the Wall, a harrowing and stark work. Mooney's voice and guitar, both quivering, conjure up the image of a lost soul at a Delta crossroads at midnight; his shadowy bass- and-drum rhythm section evokes the ominous powers of voodoo.”

Harman and the boys kick hard and heavy through half a dozen of his better-known numbers…
The guitar interplay between Hollywood Fats and Kid Ramos is textbook in its accuracy and passion, and the rocksteady rhythm section of Stephen Hodges on drums and William Campbell keeps things totally in groove territory every beat of the way”

“Myers is no stranger to irony, as his ballad "Shedding Tears of Laughter" attests, and he covers tunes by Little Walter, B.B. King and Elmore James with considerable authority. Yet it's mostly Funderburgh's far-ranging but always tasteful guitar work -- check out his evocative homages to James, Albert Collins and Freddie King -- that make "Live at the Grand Emporium" sound really grand.”

Mon, 31 Jul 2023 - 105 - Classic Artist Feature - Lonnie Mack
“Lonnie Mack is a roadhouse blues-rock legend -- modern rock's first true guitar hero. His playing has influenced the course of rock and roll and had an impact on many of modern rock's current guitar heroes, including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and especially Stevie Ray Vaughan. His early music bridged the gap between '50s rockabilly and the psychedelic blues-rock of the following decade, and, like the best rock and roll, his work continues to embody a mixture of white and black roots music. Rock, blues, soul and country -- Lonnie brings them all together for a sound that has been all his own for nearly thirty years.”

Mon, 24 Jul 2023 - 104 - SE3 Ep 26 Delmark Records 70th Anniversary Feature
“Seventy years is a long time.
Seventy years before the late Bob Koester founded Delmar (later Delmark) Records while a college student in St. Louis, Buffalo Bill’s travelling Wild West Show debuted, Chester A. Arthur was president, Thomas Edison brought electric light to Roselle, NJ for the first time, and “Black Bart” was in the news for another stagecoach robbery.
When Koester released his first record in 1953, many of the now-iconic figures in blues and jazz were still every day working musicians… Delmark is the oldest independent jazz and blues record label in the world, boasting a catalog bulging with over twelve thousand recordings by a virtual who’s who of jazz and blues.
Although Koester retired in 2018, under the leadership of President/CEO, Julia A. Miller, and Artistic Director Elbio Barilari, Delmark has released over 30 thirty albums in five years, has made digitally available over twelve thousand songs and continues its mission of seeking out and documenting new talent.

“Everything about Albert King was big.
He stood six feet four inches tall and weighed more than two hundred and fifty pounds. One fan who met the great blues guitarist and vocalist later recalled that “his hand was literally twice the size of mine.”
He played a big guitar, a triangular Gibson Flying V shaped like a rocket ship. He named it “Lucy” and played upside-down and left-handed without reversing the order of the strings. And he could play it loud, especially onstage, where his searing, overdriven lead lines, streaked feedback like jet trails from a 747.”

Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers created a rocked-out, hypnotic, ultra-danceable sound that is as emotionally powerful and wildly energizing today as it was the day they produced it.”With it being Hound Dog Taylors birthday last week, Shauns put together a collection of live HouseRockers songs perfect for getting the kids back to school and ensuring they stay there.

For Jimmie Vaughan, he’s dedicated his life to making sure the blues not only stays alive but remains full of life and an inspiration to all who listen. Mon, 13 Jun 2022 - 50 - Album Release feature - Mississippi Son - Charlie Musselwhite interview
Shauns' guest on Blues With A Feeling this week is Mississippi born, Memphis raised Grammy Award winning music legend Charlie Musselwhite; who doesn't just sing and play the blues: he is, in every sense of the word, a bluesman.
Over the course of his six decade career, Musselwhite has released nearly 40 albums
He is renowned worldwide as a master harmonica player, a seasoned, truth telling vocalist and an original songwriter rooted deep within the blues tradition. As many of his fans know, he’s also a country blues guitarist of great depth, warmth and subtlety.
On his new Alligator Records release, Mississippi Son, Musselwhite, in addition to playing his famed harmonica, features his guitar work throughout the entire album. On each of Mississippi Son’s 14 songs, including eight powerfully stark originals, Musselwhite’s straight-from-the-soul vocals and melodic blues harmonica playing are the perfect foil to his deceptively simple, hypnotic guitar work.
In this show, Shaun sits down with Charlie to discuss this weeks featured album Mississippi Son and his return to live in Clarksdale plus some unforgettable memories of his life in the blues.
