Funding has played an influential role in the amount of research conducted around gun violence and firearms. Funding had decreased related to political and policy-related issues, but now funding is being provided again. With more data being obtained, more understanding of the links between prevention, intervention, and injury can help influence better trauma-informed care. Additionally, interprofessional interventions such as partnering with communities, talking about how we educate patients, working with community health workers, and starting hospital-based violence intervention groups can be valuable for preventing and addressing firearm injuries.

scorpions, insects, marine life, and lizards.
---
This is episode 2 of the series: Envenomations: Snakes, Lizards, Marine Life, and Arthropods
Envenomations, particularly snakebites, are common in Southern states, yet most
healthcare professionals have little formal training on this subject. Frequently, the medical care provided is inconsistent with established guidelines. There are a variety of common mistakes of both omission and commission. Antivenom is not administered when it is indicated, and antibiotics and surgical interventions are ordered despite the evidence indicating these are unnecessary. Many soft tissue infections are mis-diagnosed as spider bites and hymenoptera stings often receive unnecessary and potentially dangerous treatments.
This podcast reviews the pathophysiology, clinical features, and management of various
envenomations, including snakebites, scorpion stings, spider bites, hymenoptera stings,
bites from venomous lizards and a variety of marine envenomations, including jellyfish
stings. Common myths will be dispelled, and learners will be provided with evidence-based treatment guidelines.

Series: Envenomations: Snakes, Lizards, Marine Life, and ArthropodsMon, 17 Jul 2023 - 95 - Artificial Intelligence in Nursing- Part 3: Artificial Intelligence: It's Here to Stay! How Do We Work With It Effectively?
This episode continues the conversation around nursing management of blood glucose levels in conjunction with AI algorithmic technology in insulin pumps. We conclude the podcast series at the end of this episode by considering how nursing might influence and optimize the use of technology to make our workflows and care more efficient.
---
This is episode 3 of the series: Artificial Intelligence in Nursing
What is artificial intelligence (AI)? How is it being used in healthcare today? How is it already influencing nursing care? Artificial intelligence is not a new technology. It has been around for decades. As the technology continues to evolve and people train the associated technological algorithms with more data to become smarter, technology really can begin to perform some humanlike tasks. Computers are essentially developing a cognitive type of ability, based on how the technology is designed, to work in healthcare from assisting with preparing hospital charges for billing to intelligent robots assisting patients and healthcare professionals. There are a lot of advantages with intelligence technology, but where can “help” cross the line over into concern?

Series: Artificial Intelligence in NursingMon, 03 Jul 2023 - 93 - Artificial Intelligence in Nursing- Part 1: Intersections Between Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare
In this episode, we will cover the basics of describing artificial intelligence (AI) and also discuss the role AI is playing in healthcare. AI is being used to help trigger alerts for possible medical conditions and to also design robotics for healthcare. However, along with this technology comes the concept of the black box phenomenon. We can enter data into a machine, but we don’t always understand how the machine is coming up with the information it’s giving us in return. Can it be trusted?

Series: Distinguished Careers in Nursing: Bobbie Berkowitz and Kathleen “Kitty” BuckwalterMon, 05 Jun 2023 - 88 - Challenging Patient Interactions: Conversations that Matter - Part 1: Examining Challenging Patient Interactions and the Healthcare Team
We all know that conversations in general can have understandings and misunderstandings. Conversations can lead to peace or hostility, trust or mistrust. In healthcare, many conversations take place in the presence of a health concern, scare, or crisis. This adds an additional layer of stress or the potential for a challenging or difficult time with communication. We want to help healthcare professionals to thoughtfully consider the challenges that are part of the different types of patient interactions. We want to discuss recognizing why certain interactions are stressful and help healthcare professionals break down their feelings and consider how to approach such interactions for better outcomes.
---
This is episode 1 of the series: Challenging Patient Interactions: Conversations that Matter
Communication is a perennial challenge in the world of healthcare. Healthcare professionals have their own filters, time constraints, and temperaments - so do patients. Uncertain and stressful situations, particularly healthcare-related, surfaces complicated emotions making meaningful communication between patients and clinicians difficult. Trust is the foundation of healthy communication. Addressing the issues that interfere with communication (e.g., mistrust, hostility, impatience, etc.) will help clinicians build trust with their patients and colleagues and improve communication. In this course, healthcare professionals will master the tools needed to identify possible conflicts, acknowledge patient emotions, and engage in healthy communication strategies that benefit both patient and clinician.

Series: Challenging Patient Interactions: Conversations that MatterMon, 22 May 2023 - 87 - Challenging Patient Interactions: Conversations that Matter - Part 2: Letting Go of the Blame Game
Challenging interactions are going to happen. We cannot eliminate them from the healthcare setting as everyone has their own way of dealing with emotions, stressful situations, and uncertainty. But if we know they are going to happen from time to time, we can take a more proactive approach to prevention strategies, dealing with them in the moment, and addressing patient and coworker challenges. And, of course, we want to address letting go of blame for healthcare workers who have blamed themselves for things that were outside of their control or allowed unfortunate situations to make them view themselves too harshly or unfairly.

Strong collaboration comes from the interdependent efforts of the team. Recent research across multiple industries emphasizes the importance of not just learning what behaviors are important to collaboration, but also in practicing how to demonstrate these behaviors. It is experiential learning that enables both leaders and employees to work well together, learn from one another, and overcome the psychological barriers that get in the way of doing both. In this session we will talk about not just the “what” about collaboration skills, but also the “how,” and encourage participants to practice these collaboration skills within their own team. Through learning, practicing, and applying these skills individually and within a team environment, participants will get more comfortable learning and teaming together.

Series: Building Your Credibility and Team Skills: Effective Collaboration Skills in HealthcareMon, 17 Apr 2023 - 79 - Building Your Credibility and Team Skills: Effective Collaboration Skills in Healthcare - Part 3: Feedback

Dr. Alysia Pack has been involved in advocacy at Capitol Hill and collaboration with lobbyists, lawmakers, and interprofessional provider groups to promote the advancement of nursing practice and patient access to quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare. She discusses the evolution of the NP role and how it may have started, in addition to how it looks now.
---
This is episode 1 of the series: Nurse Practitioner Regulations and Practice Issues: Pandemic to Future Considerations
The COVID-19 pandemic and emergency measures allowed many nurse practitioners (NP) to practice at a greater capacity. Healthcare needs during the past few years have brought forward multiple opportunities for expanded NP practice through the influence and power of The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), emergency measures, etc. What happens now though, as we navigate out of the pandemic and emergency measures expire? Might the future of NP practice be reformed again or will practice just return to more limited pre-pandemic conditions for many NPs?
