These two powerhouses run an incredible child care program in Oregon which is quite unique since it is not a traditional brick-and-mortar child care center. Their program is called Club K which offers exceptional hands-on learning experiences through their various activity zones.
Andrea, the seasoned pro, started off as an educator and ventured into the child care business with a modest plan that exploded into a massive 10,000 square foot center, thanks to her sister's help. Kate, who practically grew up in the child care business, initially had no intention of joining it professionally. With a degree in accounting and project management, she carved her own path until circumstances led her right back to the family business.
Their shift from traditional centers to relying solely on public school spaces is a tale of adaptation and innovation, peppered with unique challenges of its own. Welcome to part two of our conversation with Prerna Richards, founder of “Together We Grow.” In this episode, Prerna discusses techniques for child care owners to deal with staff problem behaviors. Prerna emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotional needs of staff members and the impact it can have on a child care business. She points out teachers also require validation, understanding, and appreciation. “When staff feel seen, heard, understood, motivated, valued, appreciated, they're more likely to commit emotionally, physically mentally to your program.”
Listen in as Prerna introduces the concept of applying “love languages” in the workplace and suggests that owners should identify the love languages of their staff to make them feel valued and motivated. By understanding each staff member's love language, owners can personalize their recognition and appreciation efforts.
The second strategy is to engage in connecting rounds in the morning, where owners and directors make a point to connect with each staff member individually. This interaction can be tailored to the staff member's love language, such as offering words of affirmation, spending quality time, or providing acts of service.
Another strategy Prerna encourages is to create a supportive environment by implementing a group chat or support system for the team. This fosters a sense of belonging and encourages professional growth through mentoring. Jennifer says before using EOS at her own centers, she ran her business in a reactive way. After implementing EOS she was able to run her business on a proactive basis.

Krystle's primary focus when practicing law was on general business transactions, document production, contracts, and trademark law. As she explains, "a trademark is a way to protect your intellectual property." This is important for child care owners who want to safeguard their logo and business name. Krystle advises doing a thorough search to ensure that your business name is not already taken. "If you don't trademark your business logo or name, there's a chance someone could swoop in, take it and run with it”, she cautions.
Rob, on the other hand, is an expert in commercial real estate law. He stresses the importance of separating personal interests from business interests. "At a minimum, you need to set up a Corporation or Limited Liability Company (LLC)," he recommends. This can easily be done online. Rob also suggests setting up a separate bank account for your business to keep your finances organized.
To protect your business, it's crucial to have insurance in place. Rob emphasizes the importance of "doing your due diligence as a business owner to understand the insurance side of it." We were able to spend some quality time getting to know Christine and Wade during a past workation. During the podcast Christine and Wade both share their perspectives on the value and benefits of a Child Care Genius workation.
Christine was a home provider when we first started coaching her. Through coaching we helped her realize her dream of owning her first center. We've continued to coach them through their expansion endeavors.
Christine didn't set out to be a young child care entrepreneur but rather circumstances made it a necessity for her family. Listen in to hear how her maternal instincts played a huge role in their child care business journey.
Their story is the definition of "turning a negative into a positive." Christine was able to run a successful in-home child care program while Wade completed Law school.
Wade and Christine share their unique story of running a center in another state. The commute alone showed us how dedicated they are to their child care business.
As they add another location to their roster, Christine says at times she " feels like a parent torn between two children." Christine learned early on in their expansion process, "you have to be really flexible, because timelines aren't going to happen the way you want them..."
As a couple they believe implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is a key component to running a successful business. Christine stresses, "it's important to have systems in place ahead of time, that you can replicate and do. Because you can't expand if you don't have a system you can replicate."
Wade reiterates, "for efficiency, I don't want to be recreating the wheel every time you open a new center. We already have processes that work. We have systems that work."

Our guest on the podcast today is Vernon Mason. He began his journey into our field like many of us, with in-home child care. Through twists and turns and a natural disaster, the business had to be relocated several times. Listen in to hear how Vernon persevered and expanded his child care business to 5 centers.
Years later Vernon ended up making the difficult decision to sell the 5 centers and retire from child care. Tune in to hear how Vernon was coaxed out of early retirement to partner with colleagues to run The Nest Schools. Vernon and his business partners currently operate 38 centers, with several more coming onto their roster in the next few months.
Vernon is passionate about the child care industry. "We are a relationship business."
He describes a director's leadership role as that of a "house mom.” "They need to be around, walking around building relationships. Walking around encouraging people."
Vernon strongly believes in participatory management as well. He stresses the importance of getting staff input before implementing new changes to policies or curriculum.
He notes the younger generation expect more job flexibility. Vernon believes thinking outside the box with scheduling can be beneficial.

Our guests on the podcast today, Zarvan and Melissa Karanjia, are one of the first couples we've ever coached and continue to work with presently.
Melissa started working in child care right out of high school. She worked for various centers throughout the years. Zarvan comes from a corporate IT background. Eventually, Zarvan and Melissa started their own in-home daycare which ultimately led them to opening their first child care center. To successfully run their child care business, Zarvan and Melissa had to learn to divide duties. Zarvan notes, "our skill sets kind of complement each other.” We shared with this couple the importance of "creating lanes" to work in. Zarvan affirms, "if we focus on sticking to our lanes and making ourselves accountable in those lanes, building a company with our spouses is incredibly rewarding.”

Today we are having a candid conversation with an amazing couple, Jennifer and Noah Smith from Pennsylvania. Jennifer and Noah are students in our Child Care Genius University coaching program. They are fairly new child care center owners and have also recently expanded.
Jennifer works full-time in their child care business and her husband, Noah, works full-time in healthcare, but he also assists with the financial side of things for their child care business. Most importantly they both have the same commitment to growing their business and making it the best it can be.
Jennifer used her past experiences in the child care field as she took the leap of faith to open her own center. Jennifer said she had the clear perspective of "this is what I want different for myself and my employees because I knew what wasn't going well and what I wanted to change."
Jennifer and Noah recently expanded to a second center. They share the trials and tribulations of the purchasing process. We were there to coach them along the way and assure them a better deal was out there. As a neutral third party, a coach can help guide you through tough decisions that affect your business. Had they jumped into the first deal there could have been financial repercussions. In hindsight, they can see why things played out the way they did. Have you ever had a babysitter cancel at the last minute on date night? What's a parent to do if they have a hair appointment or an impromptu business meeting they have to get to but don't have child care lined up? Our next guest, Dana Oliver, pondered some of these very questions and had an epiphany.
Dana is the president and CEO of Adventure Kids Playcare. Adventure Kids Playcare is a drop in child care franchise that is in high demand right now. It's currently expanding into new markets across the country.
The Adventure Kids Playcare hourly drop in child care franchise specializes in catering to the flexible work schedules of parents. Dana believes that providing much needed flexible child care is a great business model.
Dana shares a pivotal moment that led her on the path to create her business. After talking with other parents about common child care dilemmas.
"What do you do when you want to workout? What do you do when you want to go out on a date night? And I got the same answers. Well, get a babysitter. If they cancel, you stay home. Bottom line." Dana knew that there had to be a different way of doing child care that could accommodate parents.
After doing a lot of research Dana developed Adventure Kids Playcare. It allows parents the flexibility that they need and provides kids a place they want to go. Adventure Kids Playcare offers a wide variety of child friendly activities to keep kids engaged. Tune in to hear Dana describe the fun offerings at her centers.
After having great success at her first location, Dana knew she was on to something and eagerly started looking for a second location within a few months. Shortly after that Dana was approached by someone who had heard about her business and asked if she would be interested in franchising. Dana's answer was "sure of course!". Dana enjoys working with her franchisees. "It's a built-in peer group and they're all vested in your success." Dana elaborates on how franchisees can reach out to each other to be each other's sounding board and bounce ideas off one another. "Having that network built in is such a benefit."
Each market is different, but we can see how effective this drop in child care business model can be in big markets where there is a high demand for flexible child care.

Darren shares several end-of-the-year tax strategies to help you avoid common mistakes, keep better records, and reduce your taxes.
We know that properly filing taxes is crucial for child care businesses. It can become more complex as your business grows. Learning about financial terms and taxes can seem complicated but you’ll get it over time.
That’s why we have Darren on our team. He’s always willing to answer any questions we may have. If you don’t know what you’re doing financially it’s easy to be taken advantage of. Darren affirms it is paramount to understand some financial terms when you are a business owner. Darren understands that “everybody out there running a business is good at what they do but they're not necessarily good at accounting.”
“If you are not engaged in all kinds of really high-level stuff then you don’t need that CPA that deals with high-level stuff”. Darren elaborates “you need one that’s going to stop and take the time with you and discuss things with you…”
When it comes to finding ways to reduce your taxes, Darren doesn’t want you to miss claiming the Employee Retention Credit that many are still eligible for if their business was affected during the pandemic. Darren also points out that one common mistake that business owners make when filing their taxes is missing deductions. He highlights a few deductions that are often overlooked. Ronnae discusses how workplace culture can impact compliance. "When you're in a space where the culture is honesty, integrity, wellness, compliance then that's the tune that everyone's marching to."
As a child care owner, you can feel empowered knowing you can adjust the workplace culture in your child care business. Ronnae shares some strategies owners can use to set the culture.
What kind of workplace culture do you want to create? Define it. Write it down & hang it up where others can see the direction you’re going. Then implement it with your team.Ronnae points out that communication with your staff is key to creating a positive workplace culture. Having guidelines and setting expectations can help your team be successful. It's important to point out the positive things that team members are doing and not just criticize. As we like to say, catch your team members doing things right.
Ronnae expresses the importance of "knowing your team as people and not just your workers. Meet them where they are as people and that helps with building the culture."

Elissa Woodle, the owner of two large schools in SC, did just that. In today's episode, Elissa shares her tips for creating an amazing teacher orientation and effective mentorship program.
Elissa has run small centers and big centers. But she prefers running a big center because there are more resources to pull from. Elissa describes how they implemented the teacher orientation to acclimate incoming child care staff members. The orientation helps walk them through how the child care center operates each day. The teachers "become accustomed to our growth, our values, our goals, and our high expectations."
At Elissa's schools, once teachers have completed orientation, they migrate to a mentorship program. A senior mentor gives new staff "someone to bond with, somebody to grow a relationship with, and they have somebody to go to when they have struggles or they have wins."
Elissa believes there are many tangible psychological benefits to having a mentor program."When it comes to the confidence of these staff members they will go way beyond the call of duty and their job description, just because they have the confidence to be able to accomplish all tasks before them."

Lisa shares her unique backstory that led her into the child care field and the challenges she faced while learning the ins and outs of the child care business that she and her husband stumbled into.
Searching for answers to successfully run her business led Lisa to join a coaching program. Lisa expressed that to work with a coach "feels like you go into a partnership...with someone that has had success." "They're helping you identify your problems, helping you take action and see the results." Lisa shared the positive impact coaching had on her as she navigated leading her child care team. Coaching helped her take an honest look at herself and helped keep her accountable.
Child care owners are often trying to balance many spinning plates at the same time. It's easy to lose sight of different dynamics. Coaching can help owners look at "everything". "What's going right?" and "what's going wrong?" are equally important.
Lisa believes in “working on your business not in your business”. It can be a difficult transition from a director to an owner. "A good coach does help you take a step back and look at the school as a whole."
What is the power of one-on-one coaching? Coaches get to know you and your business more intimately. The time spent with a coach is quality time; where specific areas of concern can be addressed.
Lisa estimates that one-on-one coaching is the "best money I've spent in my business life.” "It's a personal journey, not just for your business. Coaching can change your mindset." Coaching is an investment in your child care business. Lisa affirms, "it's an investment. Not only an investment in your business, it's an investment in you."

This episode offers a lively discussion on the impact of leadership and mindset on your child care business with Joy Maxwell, one of our certified child care business coaches (a.k.a. “professors”) at Child Care Genius University.
Joy fell in love with child care when she was just 14 years old through a school work-study program. After she finished college she taught in the school system for several years, but missed the younger ages. She said, “Child care has always been my first love.” She currently owns 2 locations in Pennsylvania and one location in Florida.
Joy says, “I believe that leadership will make or break your business. People don’t leave companies, they leave bad leaders.” If your team doesn’t feel like you care about them, or if they feel like they cannot trust you as a leader, it can be detrimental to the success of your business.
Don’t assume when you hire a director that they know how to lead a team. It takes an investment of time and training to develop into a strong, positive leader (as opposed to a boss)
While being a boss technically puts you in the position of leadership, Joy shares several characteristics that differ between bosses and true leaders. Listen now to learn how to make your team feel supported, nurtured, and valued. Joy says that when you can set the right tone in your business, the whole team will be more productive, positive, and impactful.
Joy emphasized that a positive mindset is important in leadership. She remembered Henry Ford’s famous quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right.” Following up with, “Whatever your belief system is, your behaviors will follow,” pointing out how your mindset can trick you. “You have to know, trust, and believe that things will work out, that you can pivot at any point, that you can make changes, and that you can be successful.”
Joy loves to help child care owners. Her favorite part is checking back in with people and knowing that she made a difference and inspired change. She likes to take coaching beyond knowledge, encouragement, and inspiration to the point of implementation. “Knowing what you need to do without knowing how to do it, without a success map, without implementation, all of that only leads to frustration.”

If you should ever have a claim, it can quickly snowball into millions of dollars. Do you have the funds in the bank to cover such a catastrophe, or would you have to shut down your school in the wake of such a lawsuit?
Most hometown insurance agents are not equipped with the knowledge and expertise required to completely safeguard your child care business from liabilities, yet most ECE businesses rely on these generic providers for coverage.
Blake Sanders of Aleaf Insurance specializes in child care and joins us on the podcast today to point out several often overlooked areas that are often missed in child care business insurance policies. Prerna Richards, an early childhood education veteran of 37 years, joins us on the podcast today to continue our discussion on supporting teachers who may be struggling with behavior issues in the classroom.
Prerna knows that this is one of the leading causes of burnout, but feels that our teachers might not have the tools they need to help children communicate their needs.

Prerena observes that if the adult is not centered and balanced and calm, they tend to go into the reacting space instead of the responding space. She reveals a simple 4 step plan adults can follow the next time they feel triggered that will help both the teacher and child work through the behavior.
Prerna points out that behavior is a form of communication. Start looking for what the child is trying to communicate. Knowing that attention-seeking behavior is a relationship-seeking need is a game changer.
When children are acting out, doing attention-seeking behavior, they are trying to connect with you somehow. And we have to connect with them when they are calm, not just when they are not acting up.
The more you correct, the less you connect. Children will not listen to you if you are not connecting with them.

In this episode, we interview our friend and fellow child care business owner, John Abbas. John also is the host of his own show, the Mentor Nation Podcast. John says the goal of his podcast is to bring world-class leaders, entrepreneurs, and people doing interesting things to the listeners, mentoring the audience by sharing their journeys, their stories, and their best advice.
John believes that mentorship is the most important ingredient to success. He found his first mentor at the age of 29, and it changed his whole life in less than one year. Tune in to hear his story of success and growth that was sparked by an incredible mentor.
