Pastor Seth shares a message based out of Mark 2:1-12 NLT:

When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. - 1 John 4:7-11.

God’s church has a mission! In this message, Pastor Seth talks about what the mission of God is and speaks about the future of Church on the Move West as we begin a new teaching series, Missio Dei.

We’re joined this week by Pastor Jacob Sheriff of Victory Life Church. Pastor Sheriff talks about how relationships are always capped by trust, especially ours with The Father. Often, we can only see death and disappointment, but we can’t let these things take control of our lives. God is always worth trusting again, so set your expectations high and never let the enemy stand on doubt. 

We're joined by Spiritual Formation Pastor Casey Shirley. This week, Casey unpacks the question, "What if God wants to do more through you than you realize?" Often, we disqualify ourselves, but what would change if we agreed with God about who we are? Discovering a more profound calling is done through a community that consistently reminds you of your identity in Christ and calls you back to that truth. 

We want every story to have a great ending, and it's no different with the book of Revelation. Luckily, the ending doesn't disappoint. God's plan was always to dwell with His people - the end of the story is that He will. The conclusion of Revelation is the removal of evil, the redemption of everything good, and a promise that He who is the faithful witness is coming soon. The Church's response is, "Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!"

We usually don’t want to know the end of the story. In Revelation, John spoils the end; but because we know the ending, we can live in the hope of what's to come. We can live differently in the present because we know what’s at stake. We must remember, we’re not fighting for victory but from victory.

In Revelation, John gives us a picture of the Anti-Christ’s nature, reality, and mark. In Revelation 12, we see a cosmic view of the battle between the devil (the dragon) and God’s people, and in Revelation 13, we’re introduced to the beast (the anti-Christ)–a man whom the dragon gives his authority to. These passages remind us to be careful how much faith we’re putting in other people and force us to ask, whose mark do I bear?

Revelation puts in front of us some of the biggest objections people have to Christianity: the reality of suffering and judgment. But what if the real story here is not a God of judgment but a God of mercy? Revelation 6-8 reveals the true nature of judgment, the sacred nature of endurance, and the certain faithfulness of the Father. So we should remain focused on the standing throne and humbly repent when God convicts.

In Revelation 4-5, John experiences some of the most captivating scriptures in the Bible. He aims to describe the indescribable. Before the Lord shows John a picture of the future, He shows him a throne standing in heaven. These passages urge us to live our lives in light of this revelation: God’s plan will be fulfilled.

In Revelation 2-3, we read John’s letter to seven churches. These passages are Christ’s words to His Church. The letter to Ephesus reminds us that our witness is broken when it’s disconnected from love. The letter to the church in Laodicea reveals that apart from God we can do nothing. God has chosen to speak primarily to and through the Church. So, what is the Spirit speaking to Church on the Move?

There may be no other book in the Bible as compelling yet equally mysterious as the book of Revelation. So, how should we approach a book like this? It’s important to look at the book both as a prophecy and as a letter. The Church is missing something significant when we don’t read Revelation; it’s a story that reframes our perspective, strengthens our resolve, and calls us to worship.

Prayer doesn’t make us righteous; however, the lives of the righteous are saturated in prayer. The wicked do not turn toward Christ, but the righteous repent daily. So we should pray with bold humility and depend on the Father in everything.

Proverbs 31 isn’t a weight to carry around or an impossible checklist to measure up to. Instead, it’s a mirror to check ourselves against standards of biblical wisdom. We can become Proverbs 31 believers because Jesus is a Proverbs 31 Savior. The question is, are you allowing godly wisdom to be productive and guide your life?

There is an epidemic of loneliness, so we should intentionally pursue Christ-centered friendships. Biblical friendship begins in fellowship with other believers. Through devotion, trust, time, and care, godly friendships help sanctify us. Real friends will push you to live more like Christ. 

We all have something to give because generosity isn’t just about finances. It’s good to be put in positions to give what we have to others. Obedient generosity displays the Father’s love; however, to be a good giver, we must be connected to the great giver. We should pray, “Father, show me the way to be a good giver today.”

Fear of God is intended to create closeness with our Father as we move further into a relationship with Him. When we get close, God will reveal his character and heart to us as he did to Moses on Mount Sinai. Healthy fear is the foundation of wisdom that makes us look and act more like Jesus.

Proverbs is an excellent source of principles and practices for our lives. It’s easy to approach these with a “put on” or “self-help” mentality; however, trials and pressure will always bring what’s rooted in us to the surface. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, so we need to be filled with the word of God. Life change moves from the inside out, so the question is, what’s really in you?

Pride makes it impossible to submit to God. When you can’t submit to Him, it is difficult to trust, seek, and fear the Lord. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble,” so we should stop our arrogant thinking. From a place of humility, we can collaborate with the Holy Spirit, and when we listen (obey), He will lift us up in honor. 

We often don’t get the weight to which our words matter. There are times when we should refrain from speaking and times when we should have difficult conversations. But how do you know when & how to speak? Luckily, Proverbs gives us a roadmap for navigating these nuanced situations with wisdom.

Physical maturity is inevitable; however, emotional maturity is optional. Proverbs is a book intended to help you and others become more like Christ. Through this process of growth, we learn to humble ourselves correctly and, more importantly, how to appropriately fear God.

Maturity does not come by reaching for more responsibility or authority. It is developed by embracing God’s process of becoming.

Our guest Jack Harris, world missionary and evangelist, speaks about the importance of divine positioning. When God calls you to do something you don’t understand, it’s an opportunity to step out in faith. Fear will keep us paralyzed, but God positions us according to his will. Obedience in His positioning propels us towards wisdom and effective ministry.

God never speaks and gives a word without giving a confirmation. Joseph received confirmation from God time and time again and rose to the challenge of staying diligent no matter how challenging his circumstances got. Spiritual laws give us a pathway to both vindication and success. There are going to be times when you do the right thing but don't get your just reward. Take heart: your breakthrough almost never comes when you want it to, but it always comes when it's supposed to.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are two concepts not only central to the story of Joseph, but central to the Christian faith.  Forgiveness is about coming to the Lord with the fullness of your feelings and trusting Him with them. It's an inner work between you and God. Sometimes, this inner work leads to repentance and reconciliation with others. What God desires above all, is reconciliation with you.

In Genesis 42-44, Joseph tests his brothers. He gives them a chance to enter back into relationship with him on the basis of trust. We all have to face different tests and trials that form something in us. God never tempts you, but he does allow you to walk through difficult seasons. Tests reveal who you truly are, and give you the chance to truly change. When you pass the test, you're released into a new level of intimacy with God and effectiveness for His Kingdom.

Whether in prison or the palace, Joseph served others and glorified God.

God has a way of bringing us to in-the-meantime seasons – a place where you feel stuck in the middle of where you used to be and where you want to go. In Genesis 39,  this is where Joseph is at. God often does His most significant work in our lives during this time if we let Him. But it can be hard to trust that He’s working even when we don’t see it. What God has for you is better than what you could ever imagine for yourself. But how do you follow Him in the meantime?

The story of Joseph is the story of a family and God’s faithfulness to them. What does it mean to have God working in and through your family? The reality of family is that you’re connected to a people whether you realize it or not, and where you come from shapes you in significant ways. Unless you allow your relationship with God to shape and refine you, all of your outward faith will have very little impact on your family, and unhealthy patterns will persist. But the good news is God is faithful in spite of your unfaithfulness.

“Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” That statement implies a realistically ideal goal that Jesus’ disciples are to pursue with restful dissatisfaction in this life until their final perfection in eternity.

Easter 2023 at Church on the Move West

Prayer is not a burden of religious obligation but a gift of relational connection. When Jesus prayed, He taught us to be honest about how we feel and what we want, but most importantly, to surrender our desires to God’s plan. Prayer is a safe and personal place we’ve been given to get our hearts and minds right and to align our lives with the will of the Father. 

Spiritual disciplines like fasting help us stay obedient in the present. It reveals what is most important to us and prepares us to meet and receive from God. Seasons like these are also excellent for intentionally entering into times of prayer, and in Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus gives us a structure to follow.

Have you ever made a vow to yourself that you’d never do something, only to do that very thing? In Mark 14, we see this happen to Peter. Our culture prioritizes comfort, which is why spiritual practices of self-discipline, like fasting, are important. We voluntarily enter into a crisis before the unavoidable realities of life. When done properly, these seasons will focus our attention on and move us toward Jesus

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus invited the disciples to, “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). It’s all too easy to live life on autopilot, but what if you’re missing something important because you’re not fully awake? People of prayer are a people who are aware of their need. Whether it’s busyness, distraction, discouragement, or selfishness, there’s always something vying for your attention and priority. Jesus invites you to wake up and pay attention. Through obedience, repentance, and communion with God in prayer, let’s enter into a season of awareness.

When you’re a Christ-follower, you’re not just a follower of teachings; you have become a new person. You being reborn in Christ was a miracle, but the renewing of your mind is a process that you have the responsibility to see through. Luckily, you have the power to do this living inside you through the Holy Spirit. In partnership with the Holy Spirit we need to:

Remove old broken thoughts,

Replace them with new God thoughts,

and Repeat these new God thoughts until they become normal, constant, and dominate our minds.

One of the enemy's favorite strategies is isolating you from all that is Godly and surrounding you with all that is worldly. This is why in Galatians 6:1-3, Paul encourages his brothers and sisters to "Share each other's burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ." To fight as a family, we need to know and be known by one another.

Subject: I need help or I want to help

There’s a cost to following Jesus. You have to deny your flesh, but you’ll never succeed in your own strength. Living by the Spirit is the only way to win the war against fleshly desires. The Spirit of God gives us power for new life, and if you’re a child of God, you have everything you need to be led by the Holy Spirit. Learn his voice, listen, and obey.

In Ephesian 2, Paul reveals our three enemies: the flesh, the world, and the devil. This week, Pastor Whit details how you can combat Satan: the father of lies. Before you can defeat the devil, you have to understand that he is real, his goal is destruction, and his weapons are lies. How do you fight lies? You fight them with the truth: the truth that God speaks in His word.

There is a struggle within you. Paul understood what this felt like: “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out” (Romans 7:18). Paul would tell you this war isn’t just physical; there is a spiritual battle happening both inside you and around you. And this war of wills can leave you wondering, Have I changed at all? But take heart: this war is winnable. Galatians 5:16 says, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Will you decide to fight?

In John 9, Jesus heals the man born blind. Faith gives us new eyes. By faith, we receive the work of Jesus, see the work of Jesus, and join the work of Jesus. God is always working and moving, and we have to train our eyes to see Him. Our world is intentionally designed to numb us from the awareness of God. So we must be counter-formed through spiritual practices to train our spiritual eyes.

During His ministry, Jesus crossed cultural and social barriers to chase after people. In John 4 when He encountered the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus compassionately confronted the reality of her life, and He does the same for us. Jesus’ grace accepts us as we are; however, He won’t leave us where we are.

There is more than one way to encounter Jesus. Many dropped everything they were doing to follow him, yet some remained curious but skeptical. One of these was Nicodemus the Pharisee, who, in John 3:2, went to speak with Jesus. While he didn’t immediately let go of his beliefs, Nicodemus was intrigued by the Rabbi’s teaching. Only after the death of Jesus on the cross can we see the impact of Nicodemus’ encounter with the Lord. So what do you need to let go of to take hold of Jesus?

In week one of Encountering Jesus, Pastor Seth Swindall illustrates how the lives of believers will naturally point toward Jesus. In John 1:43, when Nathanael met Jesus, he was invited to “come and see” what the father had for him. Similarly, we need to ask, Jesus, what do you want for me and from me?

Pastor Ryne Isaac kicks off the year with three things that will be useful in faithfully following Jesus throughout 2023. We are fully equipped if we keep Jesus in front of us, listen to the spirit inside us, and connect with the family of God around us. 

The idea that God is love is not only fundamental to understanding what Christmas means for you, but understanding the very nature of God and of yourself. Love comes from God; it didn’t orginate with mankind and it won’t end with mankind. God’s love is eternal and transcendent. This is why your need for love cannot be filled with earthly things. Luckily, you were made by a God who is eteranl and eternally loving. The story of Christmas is the story of God choosing to make Himself vulnerable, paying the ultimate cost for love.

Joy is a a feeling of great pleasure and happiness, and Christmas can be filled with the promise of joy and cheer. But when our joy comes from external things, it’s fleeting. The true source of joy is knowing God is working in your life and that He is good. Joy is not a season, or a moment, or a movie; Joy for the Christ-follower is a person, and His name is Jesus.

As we approach Christmas, we’re making space to truly experience God. Christmas means the forever promise of peace with God, peace with others, and peace within. This peace comes through the sacrifice of Jesus, who absorbed the debt of our wrongdoing. Because of His forgiveness, we are called to respond to others with humility and forgiveness, living in the promise of peace.

Hope is a positive expectation of the future. People need hope. In fact, it's necessary for human flourishing. But Christian hope is different. Hebrews 10:23 says, "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” All other hope is shakeable and abstract, but Christian hope is specific, certain, and communal, rooted in the promises of God.

In Mathew 28:18-20, Jesus tells us to “go and make disciples,” but what does discipleship even entail? This week, Pastor Seth Swindall sits down with Pastors Brian Jobe and Angela Ekstrum to explore this idea. It’s not just a simple journey with a single finish line. Discipleship is constantly moving towards God, growing closer to others, and facing ourselves along the way.

We were created to live in the presence of God. It’s where we belong, yet holy encounters are often unexpected. Even Moses questioned God’s direction for his life in Exodus 3:1-14 at the burning bush. Through worship, we can also encounter God in our daily lives, and like Moses leading a nation into freedom, obedience always leads to life change.

In the final week of What The Bible Says About Money, Pastor Seth Swindall talks about living with the awareness to be used by God. When we understand how compassionate God has been to us, we cannot help but serve others. In Titus 2 and 3, Paul explains that you must be zealous, ready, and devoted to good works. In our need, God moved to show us undeserved grace; therefore, we should be compassionate and always prepared to help those around us.

Our campus Pastor, Seth Swindall shares that generosity is a response to God’s love in this week’s message. Understanding how we should model The Lord’s generosity is an important part of our lives because, as believers, we are known by and defined by what comes out of us.

God provides. We steward. We honor God. We become generous because He is generous.

How do you, a Christ-follower, walk out the Biblical concept of honor when it comes to your finances? Let's talk about it.

We live in a culture of dishonor—you see it in the cynicism and sarcasm that tears down everything without limit. You see it in how we talk to and about each other. We've grown up in this culture of dishonor, so the Biblical idea of honor might not come naturally to you. But honor is a part of the culture of Heaven, and you're meant to honor God. So, how do you honor God with your money?

You honor what you love You honor what you prioritize You honor with your actions

Good stewards are urgently faithful to the interests of their master, but what even is stewardship? Matthew 25:14-30 gives us an incredible picture of what it means to be a good steward. Pastor Blake Zimmerman unpacks what we as servants need to understand about the importance of talents, being co-rulers of creation, and how being a steward means we must put our trust in God and that God will put his trust back in us. 

Money is a heart issue. There’s not an area of our life that’s not impacted by our experience and attitude about money. It’s vying for a place in our hearts because it carries with it a hope of security, peace, and satisfaction. Our Heavenly Father sees where we’re at, and He wants to supply our needs. Whether you’re in a time of need or a time of abundance, are you willing to trust Him? Join us for week one of our series What the Bible Says About Money.

In Ephesians 6, Paul reminds the church that we will face opposition. There is an enemy, and we have to be ready to fight. In order to do this, we have to answer three key questions: who do we fight?, Where are we fighting?, and How do we fight? We must allow ourselves to be shaped by the scriptures and advance the Kingdom of God wherever we go because that’s how we truly bring light to the darkness.

When the Gospel story affects every part of our lives, we find a more beautiful way to live and interact with one another. No matter what kind of relationships you’re in, the principles Paul talks about in Ephesians 5 are universal for everyone who is in Christ. Our in-Christ relationships are characterized by our submission, sacrifice, and surrender to one another. This submission is not subordination or servitude; it is the willful choice to entrust ourself to another person. Every aspect of our lives as followers of Jesus should be a testament to the gospel, and sometimes the loudest gospel we can preach is by the way we live in our home.

In week 5 of our Ephesians series, Pastor Seth Swindall takes us through Ephesians 4.  We learn how God builds the church by building people and connecting them to each other. It takes work and intentionality to be unified in the body of Christ but we are called to do this work in order to function as a body.  

We assume that if God wants something, it will happen without our cooperation, but we have to do our part. It is the manner of God to work through people. In a mysterious work, God has elevated the Church to His own right hand through Christ. It is His desire to anoint our abilities and fill us with His might. We partner with Him so that His will may be done on earth as it is in heaven.

In Ephesians 2:11-22, Pauls talks about Jews and Gentiles being reconciled to each other. There was a deep cultural divide between these two people groups that only Christ could heal, but what does this mean for us today? Sin doesn’t just affect our relationships with God: it affects our relationship with others and with ourselves. But through Christ, God has reconciled us to Himself, and He has given us reconciliation with each other. The family of the Church is a living witness to what Jesus did on the cross. Family may be messy, but it’s so worth it.

In Ephesians 2:1-10, Paul paints a vivid picture of who we were before Christ and who we are after Christ. We were spiritually dead, enslaved to the desires of the body and mind, and condemned to God’s wrath. But this is good news. Why? Because a diagnosis is the first step in treatment, and we have a cure that goes all the way to the root of the problem. In our darkness, Jesus found us and delivered us from the pit by His grace. There’s no better news than that! Join us for week 2 of “Ephesians: Becoming a Real Jesus Community.”

There is a tension in the life of a Christ follower, and that is the tension of being a citizen in two kingdoms: an earthly kingdom and a heavenly one. This can be difficult to navigate, because both of these kingdoms have different cultures, or way of doing things. This week, we take look at Ephesians 1. In Ephesians, Paul’s prayer for us is that the eyes of our hearts would be open to who we are in Christ so that we can bring Heaven to our earthly kingdom. Let’s dive in to week 1 of “Ephesians: Becoming a Real Jesus Community”!

That’s why we have to do the hard work of studying context. To imprecate means “to invoke evil upon or curse” one's enemies. Psalm 137 is a prayer of imprecation. It shows us that God wants us to bring the fullness of our emotions to Him, no matter how raw and unfiltered. Different seasons with God require different ways of talking to Him. This is the first week of our series Summer in the Psalms. Psalm 1 is only six verses, yet it reveals so much about God and ourselves. God’s no often precedes His yes, and fruit comes seasonally. We live in a world obsessed with success. But we are not called to success; we are called to long and faithful obedience. We give everything we can within the limits of how God created us and trust Him with the results. When we are faithful, God will see to it that we are fruitful.
