Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 180 - IBSA World Games Part 2
Some subscribers to the podcast feed might have noticed over 2023 that the podcast releases have been a little sporadic. This was mainly due to Matthew Leyton's life becoming more complicated and him not having the time to devote to the podcasts themselves.
Matthew has always taken pride in the podcasts as he has always aimed to give the subscriber an enhanced experience over the broadcast show.
With the year rushing headlong into a conclusion and Matthew no longer working with us, I have made the decision to release those episodes he never got around to releasing in their original broadcast form. This episode we wrap up the Games and look at what some of the results mean for the Paralympics and beyond.
We all miss Matthew as much as you, the listener, do and of course we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours back in Britain.

Wed, 06 Dec 2023 - 175 - Shopping
Some subscribers to the podcast feed might have noticed over 2023 that the podcast releases have been a little sporadic. This was mainly due to Matthew Leyton's life becoming more complicated and him not having the time to devote to the podcasts themselves.
Matthew has always taken pride in the podcasts as he has always aimed to give the subscriber an enhanced experience over the broadcast show.
With the year rushing headlong into a conclusion and Matthew no longer working with us, I have made the decision to release those episodes he never got around to releasing in their original broadcast form. This episode Matthew embarks on one of the most treacherous and frightening adventures of his time back in London.... shopping for kitchen electrical.

Sam writes:
“Me and Heidi have known Dee since 2001, and have spent many an afternoon over a pint or three of beer chatting much like this interview.
Quite often people say someone was “Lucky Enough” to make it onto an International Sports Team luck be damned – being Not-Out against NSW (the current National Champions) at the National Cricket Inclusion Championships might have had something to do with this well-deserved selection.”

Tue, 30 May 2023 - 153 - Shannon Davis
On this week’s Studio 1: Shannon Davis, the family man and former PwC partner who went for a routine eye check up and was told he’d lost 90% of his sight.
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
Our guest this week is family man, high powered business mega-brain and formerly Australia’s number four in junior men’s tennis Shannon Davis.
Unfortunately - proving that sight-loss can happen to anyone - a couple of years ago, out of the blue, Shannon discovered that he’d lost ninety percent of his sight to glaucoma.
Matthew writes:
“Shannon first came into our orbit in March last year, when - within 15 months of discovering that he had lost 90% of his sight to glaucoma - he put himself out there, working as an ambassador for Glaucoma Australia
“As mercenary as it sounds, and as much as I felt for Shannon and his family at a difficult time is way of looking at things - from a consultant’s view - organisational and policy perspective - was quite exciting
In many ways, I felt that his personal loss was going to be to the benefit of other people living with vision impairments and sight loss.“And I wasn’t wrong.
“A couple of months ago to mark World Glaucoma Week, Shannon and Glaucoma Australia put together a seminar on ‘Financial Wellness’ - basically what can you do to look after yourself and your family financially in the aftermath of sudden and catastrophic sight loss.
“In theory, Shannon was here to promote that seminar.
https://glaucoma.org.au/i-have-glaucoma/living-with-glaucoma/financial-wellness-in-glaucoma-what-assistance-is-out-there
“But because Shannon is incredibly frank about what he’s been through and very generous of spirit, our conversation went in a totally different direction.

Tue, 09 May 2023 - 151 - Blind Parents, Sighted Child
What’s it like to be a sighted child with blind parents?
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1, Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view
This week the second of three shows recorded on Matthew's recent unexpected last-minute trip to London.
Last week, we spoke to proud mum, obedient wife and Eye Clinic Liaison Officer at Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital in London Paula Thomas.
This week Paula’s beautiful fourteen year old daughter Charlotte joins us.
Paula and her husband Stuart both live with a vision impairment, but Charlotte is sighted.
What’s it like to be the sighted child of parents who can’t see?
In a warm, moving and often darkly funny interview Charlotte and Paula talk about their experiences and do some bickering.

WARNING: This week’s Studio 1 contains language that some listeners may find offensive.
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
On this week’s show…
The first of three shows recorded on my recent unexpected last-minute trip to London.
This week Matthew speaks to Paula Thomas, She’s the Eye Clinic Liaison Officer at Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital in London
When Matthew’s twin daughters were both born with congenital cataracts, she was the person whose job it was to hold his and his family’s hands and helped them navigate what can only be described as quite a traumatic experience
She was also the first severely sight impaired person Matthew had ever spoken to about being severely sight impaired himself.
Not only that, she’s the person who came up with the concept for this very show
In the Layton household she is referred to as ‘Matthew’s Hospital Girlfriend”

Wed, 05 Apr 2023 - 149 - The Surgeon Oculist to The Royal Household
On this week’s Studio 1: Matthew speaks to the man who last week was appointed Surgeon Oculist to the Royal Household - or as Matthew used to know him when they were kids, “Graham from next door”
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
On this week’s show…
The third and final show recorded during Matthew’s unexpected, last minute trip to London.
Matthew speaks Mr. Graham, Duguid, consultant surgeon at the Western Eye Hospital in Central London.
Graham is the son of the late great Mr. Ian Duguid, who was also a consultant eye surgeon and the man who operated on Matthew’s eyes when it was discovered that he was born with congenital cataracts
And, as you may have worked out by now, the Duguids lived next door to the Laytons for about forty years.
So this one’s personal.

On this week’s Studio 1: The show’s favourite rockstar, Casey Harris of X Ambassadors
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
On this week’s show…
Back to talk to us for the third time, our guest is not only the engine room of award-winning, chart topping popular music combo X Ambassadors, he’s a fully qualified and certified piano tuner.
His name is Casey Harris.
Casey and Matthew have a natter about the things that, as fathers with living with vision impairments, they have to get their wives to do - like identifying rashes and cutting kids’ fingernails.
Casey waves his fist in the air about the inaccessibility of music software, Matthew offers to buy Casey a xylophone and was that a clue to when X Ambassadors might be releasing new music….?

Mon, 27 Mar 2023 - 146 - International Glaucoma Week with Dr James Muecke and Kirk Pengilly
On this week’s Studio 1: We’ve brought out the big guns! An Australian of the Year and a bona-fide Australian rock’n’roll legend!
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
International Glaucoma Week kicks off on 12th March and for the fourth year in a row, to mark the occasion, we talk to Australian rockstar Kirk Pengilly about how he narrowly avoided losing his sight to glaucoma.
And, as before, Matthew presents Kirk with a couple of pieces of music to listen to. Last year, for the first time, Matthew got two ‘thumbs up’ - let’s see how he does this year.
And, as usual, we have asked a medical professional to give us an overview of what glaucoma actually is, but this year we’ve gone straight to the top.
2020 Australian of the Year Dr James Muecke outlines glaucoma causes, symptoms, treatment and, most importantly of all, prevention.

Wed, 01 Mar 2023 - 144 - Sirine
On this week’s Studio 1: Sirine - the seventeen year old singer-songwriter who stole the show at last year’s #WhiteStickFest and is about to steal your heart.
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week Matthew talks to Sirine, the seventeen year old singer-songwriter who shared a virtual stage with Sarah McLachlan and KT Tunstall and, to put it mildly, acquitted herself rather well!
In this often touching interview, Sirine tells Matthew about going blind at the age of 11, her relationship with her father and how appaearing on Britain’s Got Talent changed her liffe.

Fri, 24 Feb 2023 - 142 - Heidi
On this week’s Studio 1: Matthew talks to the first person he ever met with the same eye condition that he has. He was 46 years old at the time.
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week Matthew talks to Sam’s wife Heidi.
Heidi and Matthew were both born in the 1970s with congenital cataracts.
In both cases it was a few months before the condition was spotted.
Both of them had operations to remove the lenses from their eyes and, unlike today when those lenses would be replaced with artificial ones, Heidi and Matthew have no lenses at all in their eyes.
So it’s quite likely that they’re the only two people you know who see the world the right way up!
Matthew and Heidi talk about the pros and cons of mainstream education versus specialist schools for people with a vision impairment.
Heidi went to a specialist school while Matthew went to a mainstream school.
Heidi has lifelong friends from the blind and low vision community. Matthew didn’t have a conversation about vision impairment with a person with a vision impairment until the day his twin daughters were born.

Tue, 21 Feb 2023 - 141 - The Conrads
When a mother finds out that her new born baby is blind, what effect does it have on her mental health?
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week Matthew talks to Ailis Conrad, mother to 5 year old Kitt, who was born with congenital glaucoma.
Matthew’s twin daughters (who are now 11) were born with congenital cataracts, so, although Matthew and Ailis might never have met in normal circumstances, they have found they have a lot in common.
Clouds, silver linings etc...
Ailis speaks candidly and generously about the difficulties she had bonding with Kitt when she was born, the challenges that manifest themselves when your vision impaired child starts school and the joy brought by the arrival of the latest addition to the Conrad family, 8 month old Rico.
Matthew and Ailis also discuss the guilt they both feel about passing a hereditary eye condition on to their children.

Mon, 13 Feb 2023 - 139 - I Just Want a Bloody Drink!
Last week a legally blind woman was refused a drink at The Stamford Grand Hotel in Glenelg in Adelaide because “she didn’t have her carer with her”.
On this week’s show Matthew and Sam head to said hotel to see if they can get themselves a drink…
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week, at the last minute, the guest whom Matthew and Sam had booked decided they didn’t want to come on the show. For two very good reasons.
As a result, Matthew and Sam ended up having a conversation about how blind people are portrayed in the media.
If the only stories out there are about people being ‘devastated’ when they can’t get a drink or are left ‘in tears’ when a taxi driver refuses to pick them up, what does that do for the perception of people living with blindness or low vision in general?
Does this mean they are all permanently angry or upset?

Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
Phantom Images
We keep encountering stories of people who have lost sight seeing things that aren’t really there - their brains fill in the gaps for what their eyes can’t perceive.
We’ve done some digging and we’ve found someone to talk to us about this phenomenon.
His name is Scot Muirden and he’s the founder of the Charles Bonnet Foundation.
Scot tells us that there could be up to 40 million people worldwide could be suffering with this affliction and as many as 90% of them haven’t reported their symptoms to medical practitioners - or even family and friends.
In many cases, this is because the sufferer would effectively be admitting to ‘hallucinations’ which raises fears of psychiatric problems and resultant potentially frightening treatment paths

Tue, 09 Aug 2022 - 119 - Is it Time to Travel?
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
In the last two and a half years, for most of us, the world has become a bit smaller - for obvious reasons.
But as things are beginning to open up, what are the challenges facing people living with low vision or blindness as they think about getting out into the world again?
Studio 1’s Matthew Layton has just returned from a six week trip to the United Kingdom to catch up with family and friends face-to-face for the first time in two and a half years.
He’s full of the joys of travel and shares with us some of his holiday memories.
Then Sam and Matthew are joined by Buck McFarlane of ‘sensory travel specialists’ Cocky Guides.
Buck is Australia’s - nay possibly the world’s - leading expert on travel for people living with low vision or blindness. He has some sound advice for listeners who are looking to start travelling again

The conversation starts with a laser-sharp focus on X Ambassadors’ new album The Beautiful Liar, but then it starts to meanders about a bit, covering a number of topics, including how we, as two vision impaired people, are consuming coverage of the war in Ukraine in a way that may be different to the way that other people do - and how it’s affecting us and people we know.

Wed, 15 Jun 2022 - 104 - Baluji Shrivastav OBE
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
We cross to London to talk to a proper musician. He plays the sitar, he plays the tabla and he plays several other instruments whose names we can’t even pronounce.
His name is Baluji Shrivastav OBE
Yes, he’s worked with the likes of Boy George, Annie Lennox and Kylie Minogue but we’re more interested in his work with the Inner Visions Orchestra (a Stevie Wonder reference we assume) which he founded in 2008.
There are currently 18 musicians in the group and all of them are blind.
It’s all about inclusivity - in terms of cultural background, musical discipline, age, disability and even musical ability, As you’ll hear during the interview at one point he was trying to encourage Matthew to join!
Baluji doesn’t just help the members of the orchestra to perform and enjoy performing music, he also encourages them to improvise (Western musicians are apparently more comfortable sticking to the notes apparently!) and empowers them to teach classes themselves.
Bulaji also tells us of his first encounters with music as a child in India and the story of how, as a young man, he found himself alone in Nice with just two dollars in his pocket.

The Vision Australia Radiothon
Yes, it’s that time of year again.
The time of year when we here at Vision Australia Radio ask you, gentle listener, for your support in helping us stay afloat.
Helping Matthew and Sam to rattle the tin in your general direction this year are two of Vision Australia Radio’s brightest stars: our senior presenter, the man who taught all of us everything we know - we call him the guv’nor - the man, the legend Peter Greco.
Then we shall be speaking to the station’s young gun, Sam Colley of Talking Vision.

RESOURCESThe Vision Australia Radiothon 2022
It costs in the region of two million dollars to keep the Vision Australia Radio network on the air every year.
Radio is often perceived as something that doesn’t cost anything. Turn on the tap and out comes water. Turn on the radio and out comes the fantastic service that Vision Australia Radio provides.
Yes, we are grateful for the support provided by Vision Australia and other organisations, (including the Community Broadcasting Foundation who fund this show) but like most of the people whom we talk to on the show and many of our listeners, we are fiercely independent. We like to stand on our own two feet.
We realise times are hard, but we appreciate any and all donations - whatever the amount. Donations of over two dollars are, of course, tax deductible.

Wed, 01 Jun 2022 - 102 - Cobhams
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
Our guest is master musician, UNICEF Ambassador and friend of the show Cobhams Asuquo.
In this interview - recorded down the line from his home in Lagos earlier this month - Cobhams shares with us his excitement about the release of his new material.
The show features exclusive pre-release snippets of forthcoming single Elephant Man - which marks a radical change in artistic direction for Cobhams.
His new sound is a bit more edgy. If you’re familiar with Cobhams’ work, you may be shocked by the Afrobeat rhythms, lyrics that include mentions of Bentleys and Ferraris and Mr Asuquo boasting of the ‘ice’ hanging from his neck.
But in his own inimitable way, Cobhams is using this musical vocabulary to put across a positive social message.
Just because he’s blind doesn’t mean that he doesn’t like nice things.
What’s more, he’s come by these nice things through determination and hard work.
And he’s enjoying those things in a totally wholesome way.
Responsibly.
Who knows, he may even inspire other people living with a vision impairment to be as ambitious and to express themselves
As Cobhams says in the interview:
“This is not the life that’s expected of a blind person in Africa… To get in front of the microphone, to maybe hold a blinged out mic… It’s a little daring. ‘How dare you! You’re blind! Tell us about how the world should be a better place.’.... I’m going to tell you that, but I also need you to know that when you pay me for telling you how the world should be a better place, sometimes I have a good time and I want you to see that.”
What do you think of the message behind Cobhams’ new music? Will you be adopting his “wholesome hip-hop” approach to life?

Wed, 25 May 2022 - 101 - SPEEEED! - with Ben Felten
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
The world’s fastest blind man on two wheels - and that’s official.
His name is Ben Fetlen, he’s a current Guinness World Record holder and a card-carrying Australian bloke
However, while this show might at first seem to be about Ben racing across the South Australian salt flats at 266kph on a motorbike without being able to see where he’s going, there is actually something a little more important at its heart.
Here at Studio 1 we’re always keen to explore the link between blindness, low vision and particularly sight loss and mental health issues.
In this episode of Studio 1 Ben talks incredibly frankly, eloquently and generously - about the effect that losing his sight in his mid twenties had on his life.
As well as losing his sight, Ben lost his career, his independence and the relationship with his partner at the time.
At his lowest ebb, Ben ended up self-medicating with alcohol and soft drugs, getting into fights in pubs and eventually got himself into so much trouble that he ended up in jail.
Ben goes onto tell us how, with the help of a brilliant counsellor, he managed to get his life back on track.
He is without doubt the most eloquent person we’ve had on this show on the subject of sight loss and mental health and we’re incredibly grateful to him for sharing his story with us.
If you think that what Ben has to say may help someone going through this kind of issue, please share it with them.

Wed, 11 May 2022 - 99 - Never Seen Star Wars
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
As the rest of the world celebrates May the Fourth - Star Wars Day - Studio 1 tries to find out why George Lucas’s supposed masterpiece is the blind community’s least favourite film.
To this end, we are conducting an experiment.
We have sent each of our two victims… sorry, subjects (neither of whom have seen Star Wars) audio-only copies of the original Star Wars movie to see what they make of it.
Mick Zannis is the most-capped player in Australian Blind Cricket history. Mick has sat through Star Wars in the past and it never did anything for him, but we’ve sent him Disney's new audio-described version of the film.
Jason Gipps is one of the team of dedicated people who keep Vision Australia Radio on the air. We’ve sent him an audio-only version of the film to see what a sighted person makes of the experience without the usual visual aids.
Mick also tells us how to do a COVID RAT test without the benefit of sight and Jason gives us a rundown on what’s coming up in the near-future here on Vision Australia Radio.
If you’ve been affected by any of the issues in this week’s show - or if there’s something you feel we need to talk about on future shows, please do get in touch.

Wed, 04 May 2022 - 98 - Blind Joe
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
A man we’ve been wanting to talk to for a while now
The man who turned up to last year’s #WhiteStickFest - our virtual music festival to celebrate International White Cane Day - and won, because of his energy alone.
He’s a rootin’ tootin’ son of a gun and his name is Blind Joe.
He’s also a country music artist from Fargo, North Dakota.
Our conversation covers topics as diverse as music, family and the effect that COVID - or the’rona as Joe calls - has had on our lives in the last two years
If you’ve been affected by any of the issues in this week’s show - or if there’s something you feel we need to talk about on future shows, please do get in touch.

Fri, 29 Apr 2022 - 97 - Christine Ha
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
Christine Ha.
Christine first came to the world’s attention when she won one of the first series of Masterchef, her relationship with Gordon Ramsey in particular tugging at the heart strings of many watching.
In this interview we have a chance to get to know a woman who is so much more than a contestant on a cooking show,
Christine has two degrees to her name - one in Business Administration and one in fine arts - both of which she acquired as she was losing her sight.
Christine speaks with incredible dignity about what it was like to lose her sight in her early twenties and the challenge of learning how to cook without sight.
Now the proprietor of two restaurants in Houston, Texas, Christine talks eloquently of the energy and resilience required by business owners in the service sectors over the last couple of years.

Wed, 13 Apr 2022 - 96 - Murphy
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
Murphy
We meet a musician with a fascinating true gentle artist’s soul.
After losing his job - and being told that this had happened because of the issues he has with his sight, our guest today Phillip Murphy - Murphy to those who know him - hit the road, guitar in hand and lived an itinerant balladeer’s life for nigh on eight years
Then, in a strange twist of fate, our hero found himself being swept up by the U.S. reality TV juggernaut that is American Idol
A strange collision between two very different worlds
So today we have the chance to get to know Murphy a little better and to ask him about what his American Idol experience was like and how things are going for him now.

Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
COVIDThe news agenda may have moved on, but “the virus” is still having a very real effect on many people’s lives - particularly people living with low vision or blindness.
So with the help of our panel of experts, our choir of angels, our gang of friends and associates who have what the hipsters refer to as “lived experience” of low vision and blindness, we investigate!

Wed, 30 Mar 2022 - 94 - SPACE!
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
Space!
We speak to the wonderful Wanda Diaz Merced, a blind astronomer who explores space using sound.
Wanda has joined us to ask for your help with her current project measuring extra terrestrial gravitational waves.
She’s looking to recruit an army of people to help her interpret and spot patterns in the vast amount of audio data she and her team collect..
To sign up go to
https://ep.ego-gw.eu/SonificationTraining/HomePage.html
Wanda also gives us the greatest answer we’ve had to the second question we ask all of our guests, “Where are you and can you describe it for us?”
Wanda is based in Pisa and her answer includes the aromas of fresh coffee and roasting onions and the high-pitched buzzing of Italian motor scooters.

Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
“Why do you bother travelling when you can’t actually see anything?”
Matthew speaks to Tony Giles, who, in spite of his vision impairment, has visited over 130 countries.
Tony tells us of his adventures sofa-surfing in Russia, kayaking in Papua New Guinea and accosting strangers on the streets of New York.
Other topics discussed include the smell of penguin poo and Tony’s collection of garden gnomes.

Wed, 16 Mar 2022 - 92 - 'Make Up!' with Lucy Edwards
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio’s weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view.
This week:
Make-up!
Many of the people we talk to in the course of making Studio 1 lose sight later in life.
On top of all the other frankly horrible things that this loss can lead to, it can mean the loss of the ability to apply make-up with confidence - to put on the war-paint that allows them to go out and face the world with confidence.
So, instructed and inspired by Studio 1’s resident chef-cum-children’s author Jen Gierens, Matthew and Sam have left their comfort zone, and gone on the hunt for make-up tips.
Sam has canvassed the opinions of Studio 1’s Panel of Experts/Choir of Angels for their advice. We hear from Heidi Rickard, Gabrielle Simmons, Grace King and Carolyn Johnson.
Matthew asks content creator, style icon and influencer Lucy Edwards for help.
Lucy is eminently qualified. As well as having 1.5 million followers on TikTok, Lucy has a contract with shampoo brand Pantene as the face of both their universal packaging initiative and their Pantene Miracles Silky and Glowing hair care line.
