Thu, 28 Mar 2024 - 32min - 251 - How Flexible Pay Will Enhance The Workforce in 2024
This episode is from a live webinar recording of The HR and Payroll Foundation series.
In our third of five HR & Payroll Foundations webinars, we addressed crucial topics that HR & Payroll leaders should consider as their workforce face the cost-of-living crisis and may be struggling to make ends meet.
How can a more flexible payment offering make a difference?
The reality is that the cost-of-living crisis is not likely to ease anytime soon. For millions of people, this means the value of their earnings is eroded; even if they receive a pay rise it’s likely to be well below their needs, meaning a cut in real earnings.
For employers, this poses several challenges, not least the potential damage that arises from having a stressed and underperforming workforce. But it also adds to the risk of staff moving on – something that is already being seen in the post-Covid ‘Great Resignation’ – with people more likely to seek a better-paid job.
According to a study by flexible payment provider Wagestream, nearly seven out of 10 employees (68%) are concerned about their finances and hiding this from employers, and as many as one-in-four (24%) worry about money every single day. One way in which HR can help is through strengthening their relationship with their payroll departments and more specifically through considering the use of flexible pay. This enables employees to access money they have already earned when they need it, rather than having to wait until a set pay-day. For those on lower incomes, this can make a real difference, potentially avoiding the use of credit cards or, worse, payday lenders.
In this time of uncertainty, our esteemed panel discussed all of these topics, including expert advice and real-life case studies in detail during a perceptive, 1-hour free webinar.
Watch now to discover:
How organisations with a fresh look on payroll can make a positive impact on recruitmentWhat changes flexible pay can make to your employees’ financial wellbeingWorkplace management systems that can further help employees manage their money and increase savings during a cost-of-living crisisThe key benefits of implementing flexible pay servicesHow to create a winning business case for HR and payroll’s strategic investment plansOur panellists:

Enabling Payroll & HR Systems to Drive Operational Efficiency #127
The second of five episodes, where we will address crucial topics that HR and payroll leaders can't ignore, as they seek to create the right people management ecosystem for their business.
Due to rapid growth or change accelerated by a revolution in ways of working post-pandemic, some businesses have been forced to streamline their operations and reduce multiple systems and tools into one. With no central governance, this caused havoc for payroll and HR.
Add in the complexities of an increasingly remote workforce and a looming threat for businesses that have inherited legacy tech from M&As, and operations could well be at their most fraught. So much so that some believe payroll should defect and become its own function away from HR and finance.
In this climate of operational uncertainty, our esteemed panel is discussing all of these industry trends, expert predictions and real-life case studies in detail during an insightful, but accessible episode.
In this payroll podcast episode, we discover:
What our comprehensive Future of Work and People insight survey is telling usHow inefficiencies in your operation really happen in the first placeThe threat of historic mergers and acquisitions pose on wider strategiesThe opportunities of remote working from talent to wellbeingBoth sides of the debate: Should payroll become its own function outside of HR and finance? How to create a winning business case for HR and payroll investmentOur panellists:

This episode focuses on thesix key drivers that lead to payroll success.
The first of five episodes, where we will address crucial topics that HR and payroll leaders can't ignore, as they seek to create the right people management ecosystem for their business.
HR leaders are driving overall business strategy, and they’ve got their work cut out for them. Now they are tasked with cultivating people ecosystems that are cost-efficient, future-proof and primed for growth.
However, without a solid operational HR foundation, organisations can run into compliance issues, payroll problems, or process issues that erode employee trust and derail HR’s strategies.
In the first in our series of five Foundations episodes, we combine a wealth of HR research and a panel of industry thought leaders to look into the future.
In our first episode, we will discuss the shared challenges that organisations experience when it comes to payroll and HR, dive deep into what is driving these challenges, and give actionable advice on how businesses can develop a solid HR ecosystem to overcome them.
What are the discussion points in the episode?
How to create the conditions for HR to thrive as strategic leadersThe biggest problems organisations face in payroll, from cost and complexity to complianceUpdating older systems and processes to make your data work for youReal-life examples of the HR strategists who got it rightHow to start mapping your HR and payroll foundations blueprintWho should listen?

Thu, 03 Aug 2023 - 04min - 214 - EWA - Opportunity or Threat for the Payroll Professional? with Ted Bechman #121
Nick Dayis joined onThe Payroll Podcast byTed Bechman, the Chief Finance Officer and Founder ofIncome Group!
Now, with everyone predicting that 2023 will be a year of evolution for the payroll industry, Nick invited Ted Bechman on to the 121st episode of The Payroll Podcast Show to find out more about a hot topic that exists right in the centre of this evolution and that’s to discuss Earned Wage Access (also known as EWA) or Pay-On-Demandservices as its also known.
Nick wanted to determine what EWA means for payroll – is it an opportunity or a threat?
Income Group have recently developed IGsend, an Instant Payment service for busy payroll teams. IGsend is a solution that enables payroll teams and small business owners to make instant payroll payments in just a couple of clicks, enabling employees to be paid more frequently or in line with their working patterns.
There is a lot of misconception around current EWA solutions, with many payroll professionals still unaware of how far the needle has moved since the concept was first introduced. For example, the Income Group EWA IGsend solution comes at no additional cost to employees, meaning they can access wages earned in real-time for free.
So, with 80% of employees saying they would prefer to have their pay automatically streamed into their bank accounts as they earn it and with 91% of millennial workers stating that they think their employer should provide Earned Wage Access – Nick wanted to find out more today about the evolution of Earned Wage Access and who better to ask than the founder of Income Group – Ted Bechman!
In this “EWA - Opportunity or Threat for the Payroll Professional?” episode with Ted Bechman onThe Payroll Podcast, we also explore:
- What does the word payroll mean to you?Why is the payroll professional community the best-kept corporate secret? Is humility always a strength?EWA is not new – why is it different this time? Are we now in the perfect storm of need, technology and management? There has been pushback from the Payroll community - are the concerns justified?EWA is just the beginning of the journey - what is the direction of travel? Is EWA a cost of employment?Should the employee bear the cost of EWA in part?Is the return on investing in EWA compelling? What do you think the future of payroll looks like?

Mon, 13 Feb 2023 - 1h 26min - 185 - The Payroll Podcast: Episode 100 Special with Nick Day! #100
Wow, I cannot believe I am bringing you the 100th episode!
Today I will summarise some of the critical topics The Payroll Podcast has covered. These topics include payroll tax compliance; employee benefits; the use of technology; automation; innovation; global complexities; education; payroll's evolution from transactional operation to strategic function; payroll career pathways, and much more.
The Covid pandemic accelerated a change in perspective towards Payroll. Payroll professionals were rightly praised as they worked tirelessly to keep the UK paid after over 11.7 million employee jobs were put through the furlough scheme at the cost of £70 billion. World leaders, such as the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, even publicly thanked the efforts of payroll practitioners "for playing your part in what has been an extraordinary effort." As a result, Payroll has been thrust into the limelight, and with it, we have seen an explosion of new payroll career pathways open within the industry.
Therefore, as we embark on the next 100 episodes, I will continue to endeavour to cover a wide range of topics, from digitisation and automation to global payroll transformation and emerging trends, and much more!
However, before we look forward, I also want to look back at some of the many insights and conversations that have helped shape the payroll industry into what it is today.
Here are 18 key takeaways I have discovered during the 99 episodes recorded to date:
- Automation of payroll processes is increasing, allowing payroll professionals to focus on more strategic tasks and improve efficiency. Meanwhile, remember that automation and technology will not replace the payroll professional, but tasks within the traditional payroll role will.Integrating AI and machine learning in payroll processes will become more prevalent, providing new opportunities for automation, data analysis, and process optimisation. Companies are continuing to invest in payroll technologies. HCM and Payroll tech is a multi-billion-pound industry. On-Demand Pay is a particular area companies invest in because these solutions help employers manage earned wage access requests. Will this mean the dissolution of our traditional payroll cycles? Quite possibly. The employee is now the centre of the payroll experience. The employee payroll experience is becoming more critical as companies strive to attract and retain top talent. Companies will increasingly focus on creating a positive payroll experience for employees to improve retention and attract top talent.Payroll professionals should stay informed about the latest trends and technologies in the industry to position themselves for success in the future.Continuing education and professional development are essential for payroll professionals to stay ahead of the curve. Skills are the currency of the future; employees need to take actions that enable them to prepare for the future of automation, analytics and AI.The increase in global workforces will result in more cross-border payments and expertise concerning country-related payroll legislation. The barrier to hiring talent in international locations has been lowered, so this trend will only increase. In addition, the ability to deliver global payroll services remotely will become increasingly important, requiring new technologies and strategies to ensure smooth operations. There are a variety of career pathways available in Payroll across Global Payroll, data analytics, and technology. In fact, we recently identified over 60 career pathways, and yet I suspect that number has already increased to almost 100.Cloud-based payroll systems will continue to gain popularity as they provide increased flexibility, scalability, and security for remote payroll operations.Smart Interactive Payslips will make the payment process more efficient and accurate while giving workers better information and resources. The use of cryptocurrency for payrolling employees could become more prevalent, providing new opportunities for payroll professionals to explore and understand, especially now that over 300M people possess a digital wallet.Self-service portals and other tools will become more prevalent, making it easier for employees to access their pay and benefits information.Compliance with changing payroll legislation and regulations will become more critical, requiring payroll professionals to stay up to date on changing laws and regulations.Companies should also focus on building resilience in their payroll processes to adapt to unexpected changes caused by the pandemic. The importance of cybersecurity and data privacy in payroll operations will become more critical as payroll processes, and data move online and as ransomware and cyberattacks increase in likelihood. The adoption of the pay-on-demand model will increase, requiring payroll professionals to adapt and develop new processes to manage these models. The concept of on-demand pay is gaining traction, which can help improve financial well-being and reduce employee stress.Embrace change and welcome in the future of Payroll, as the line between global Payroll and reward, finance and HR will continue to blur. The future of work will demand strong leadership and vision; transferable skills will be essential for bridging the gap between roles. Therefore, payroll professionals should focus on developing their leadership skills, as the successful future payroll manager will be one who can manage both machines and people.Payroll professionals are shifting towards more strategic roles, such as providing insights and analysis to business leaders. From understanding regional pay gaps and reward scheme adoption rates to helping HR with absenteeism trends and pay review statistics, Payroll plays a fundamental role in supporting business leaders with information that enables them to compete more effectively.

The Payroll industry is Ready Now with Payroll Industry COO, Abigail Vaughan #80 https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickday/ (Nick Day) is joined on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-payroll-podcast/ (The Payroll Podcast) by https://www.linkedin.com/in/abigail-vaughan-731642/ (Abigail Vaughan), Chief Operating Officer at Award-winning payroll and HR solutions provider, https://www.zellis.com/ (Zellis)! An experienced Board level executive, with 20 years of experience delivering large-scale transformations, Abigail is a skilled strategic and customer and commercially focused leader who is currently responsible for leading Zellis operations across the UK, Ireland, and India to support over five million colleagues every month with HR and payroll services. This episode is focused on the recent statement made by Chancellor, Rishi Sunak which announced an NI and tax rise, which will take effect from July – but is the payroll industry ready to manage these changes now? For those tuning in who are unfamiliar, in the Chancellor's recent spring statement, Rishi Sunak announced that billions of pounds will be put back into the pockets of hard-working people with his unveiling of a new Tax Plan to ease the rising cost of living and to deliver the biggest cut to personal taxes in a quarter of a century. Although these tax cuts will benefit 30 million UK workers through rise in National Insurance thresholds, which will see the typical employee over £330 in the year, these changes will not impact the typical employee until July. However, Zellis believe the payroll industry is ready to implement these changes now! You may have even read John Petter’s recent letter published in the Financial Times that urges the Chancellor to act now. If you did, not do worry as Nick asks all these questions to Abigail for her thoughts on the Spring statement! In this "The Payroll industry is Ready Now with Payroll Industry COO, Abigail Vaughan on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore: * What was payroll industry was expecting in Rishi Sunak's Spring statement? * What part of the statement surprised you? * Could the Chancellor could have been more ambitious on the timing? * How hard is it to amend payroll software when legislation changes? * How much notice do you ‘usually’ get? * What will the delay mean to the average worker? * How does this compare the changes required for COVID and Furlough? * What happens next think? * Will employees now have to wait until July for this benefit? * Can you tell us more about Zellis? Tue, 22 Mar 2022 - 35min - 173 - Celebrating International Women’s Day with Rachel Gilfrin #77
Celebrating International Women’s Day with Rachel Gilfin #77 https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickday/ (Nick Day) is joined on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-payroll-podcast/ (The Payroll Podcast) by http://www.linkedin.com/in/rachel-gilfrin-lifecoach/ (Rachel Gilfrin) who is a Confidence and Career Coach who works with ambitious women to grow their confidence and propel their careers. With Payroll Careers elevating to Board Level and with many women working in payroll keen to advance into leadership roles, we thought this was a perfect opportunity to celebrate the impactful women working in payroll on the Payroll Podcast! International Women's Day has been observed since 1911 and the day marks a celebration of women, encouraging people to come together and campaign for gender equality. Last year, the UN theme for International Women's Day was "Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world", and this year, in 2022 the UN theme is "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow", to highlight the contribution of women around the globe, who are helping to build a more sustainable future for all. Well, Rachel who joins me today works with women on developing confidence in all areas of life, but she also works with businesses to improve and support gender diversity in the workplace. We celebrate International Women's day with this special episode to discuss how women who aspire to become payroll leaders in the future can unlock their potential! Recent data has shown that nearly 40% of UK FTSE 100 board positions are now held by women, compared with 12.5% just 10 years ago, Rachel is helping the UK to continue this trend. In fact, Rachel has developed a corporate group coaching program specifically designed for women to grow in confidence and communication skills, to help women feel empowered to proactively co-create their career path with the organisations they work for. Rachel is here to help us celebrate International Women's Day and introduce us all to her 3 key pillars that inspire and shape her work: Mindset, Confidence and Communication Skills. In this "Celebrating International Women’s Day" episode with Rachel Gilfrin on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-payroll-podcast/ (The Payroll Podcast), we also explore: * Tell us a little about the shift in mindset that inspired you to launch your career and business? * “Ladies, unlock your potential” – why do you think many women struggle to be seen or understood at work? * What more can businesses do to improve the representation of women? * Can you talk us through why confidence is often at a low and your process for unlocking potential and overcoming anxieties? * What are your 3 pillars for success when it comes to empowering women? * How important is Mindset, Confidence and Communication when it comes to creating future leaders? * How does your corporate program help women to deal with common workplace challenges? * Are you seeing more organisations bring their attention to gender diversity around this time? * What would you like to see more organisations doing to create an environment where women feel empowered to co-create their career path? * How can your coaching method help female leaders who perhaps are suffering from anxieties to overcome them? * If you could pick the UN IWD focus for 2023, what would it be? * Which women have really inspired you on your career journey? Can we Automate Payroll? with Marc-Oliver Fiedler #73 https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickday/ (Nick Day) is joined on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-payroll-podcast/ (The Payroll Podcast) by https://www.linkedin.com/in/mfiedler (Marc-Oliver Fiedler), founder of Global Payroll Platform provider, https://payzaar.com/ (PayZaar). Can we Automate Payroll? Marc is an experienced international payroll executive who brings to today’s show a strong background in setting up and scaling new payroll business models and new payroll technology-driven ventures within the B2B SaaS/Cloud space. Before founding Payzaar, Marc held leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, and ADP. While at ADP, Marc became intimately acquainted with the challenges payroll people face every day as well as the many limitations that existed within the solutions that were being provided by payroll providers at the time. This experience led him Marc found Payzaar, an innovative global payroll management platform with a different model to the traditional large aggregators that dominate the market. Instead of providing payroll through a closed system of exclusive national providers, Payzaar is provider-agnostic, so companies can integrate with any provider they choose anywhere in the world – leading to clients enjoying greater flexibility, no lock-in effect, and significantly lower costs with shorter integration times. When not focused on Payzaar, Marc is a keen tennis player, golfer, and bread baker! A hobby he picked up during the pandemic. In this "Can we Automate Payroll?" episode with Marc-Oliver Fiedler on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-payroll-podcast/ (The Payroll Podcast), we also explore: * What does the word “payroll” mean to you? * How has payroll evolved? * How has the Covid pandemic changed the payroll landscape? * Why are so many payroll operations experiencing major transformations? * What is the market telling you at Payzaar, and what is your perspective? * Is it possible to automate payroll? * What are the consequences of organizations undervaluing their payroll function? * Where do you think payroll is going in the next 5 years? Fri, 10 Sep 2021 - 42min - 160 - Cyber Security: Phishing, Ransomware and a Web of Lies with Bryan Seely #64
Cyber Security: Phishing, Ransomware and a Web of Lies with Bryan Seely #64 https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickday/ (Nick Day) is joined on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-payroll-podcast/ (The Payroll Podcast) by https://www.linkedin.com/in/bryanthemapsguy/ (Bryan Seely)! Bryan has advised the White House and is the only hacker and speaker who has successfully wiretapped the United States Secret Service and the FBI! Later that year, my guest also de-anonymized the highly valued mobile app, Secret, which put him on the front page of Wired.com, CNNMoney, CNET, Forbes, and The Washington Post — all in the same day! Seriously! That is because Bryan is a world-famous Security Keynote Speaker, Ethical Hacker, Author and Former US Marine joining us today to talk about the importance of cyber security. Bryan is passionate about fighting for consumers' rights and privacy and educating the public about staying safe in a constantly changing technology landscape. He currently lives in Seattle with his 2 children, and he now freelances as a cybersecurity consultant and advises John McAfee and his company MGT. Now with 81% of UK SMEs confirming that they had suffered a data breach or cyber-attack, with a considerable two in five (37%) admitting they had suffered multiple breaches – I was compelled to invite Bryan to the show – because Payroll, in particular, is a department that is extremely vulnerable to cyber-attacks. In this episode of the Payroll Podcast, we discuss the genuine cyber security threats that all payroll, HR and business professionals should be wary of to protect themselves, employees and organisations from phishing, ransomware and other cyber-related attacks. In this "Cyber Security: Phishing, Ransomware and a Web of Lies" episode with Bryan Seely on https://jgarecruitment.com/the-hr-ld-podcast/ (The HR LandD Podcast), we also explore: * Bryan, you became one of the world’s most famous hackers in 2014 – can you tell our listeners why? * I understand the Secret Service called you a hero and praised your courage and integrity – what's the story? * In the world of payroll and HR, we see increases in Payroll fraud, recruitment scams, data breaches and corporate espionage. Why is this? * What can payroll, HR and business leaders do to protect themselves and their employees from phishing and ransomware attacks? * Cyber and data security is a critical concern, and with payroll and HR departments so vulnerable to attack, what protocols will help keep data safe? * How likely is it that one of our listeners suffers a ransomware attack (Spoiler alert: it is much higher than you might think)! * What is it like inside the mind of a potential hacker or Cybercriminal? What are they doing and thinking when they target a potential business for an attack? * If you were a payroll or HR manager, what are the key questions you would ask your software provider to ensure you are secure? * What advice would you give to help payroll and HR departments protect themselves and their employees from scam and phishing attempts? * Cyber Fraud also extends to LinkedIn. Can you tell our listeners why they need to be wary of the fake LinkedIn profiles and how they can identify one? * You have, of course, written a book titled https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cyber-Fraud-Cybercrime-Consumers-Nothing/dp/1533156778 (Cyber Fraud: The Web of Lies) (available on Amazon) - we found out more about this best-selling book!
