- 483 - Ep. 483: Take Your Brain Back with Kara Lowentheil
When you grow up a woman in this society, there are a number of ways we get socialized—to feel like we have to earn our worth, to second guess every choice we make, to hate our bodies, or that we’re never good enough. But when you realize that you have the power to change your thoughts, a whole new world of possibilities opens up for you. Today we got to chat with Kara Lowentheil of the UnFuck Your Brain podcast about her new book and her mission to help women get out of their own heads, own their experiences, and take up the space they deserve. Getting your mindset “right” is a huge part of living up to your highest potential—your best life—but it doesn’t have to be inaccessible and it doesn’t have to be “woo woo.” We can all take charge of our experiences, no matter how society has taught us we “should” behave.

We’ve all heard some 20-year-old trainer say that “age is just a number” when it comes to our training, but the truth is that fitness in our 40’s and beyond is different than what we used to do! Our bodies, hormones, and metabolisms are changing and that means we have to change our workout methods if we want to stay healthy and fit as we age. We know just how important it is to put on muscle, so today we’re chatting with Rachel Cosgrove about her new book, Age Strong, and why talking about women’s fitness after 40 matters so much. We want to look and feel good for as long as we can, and it starts with adapting our workouts to what works best at every age.

Is it just us, or is the internet boring as fuck lately? And yet even though we’re bored to tears, we can’t stop cycling through the same apps over and over again. We’re addicted to it and yet we’re just so bored. Everyone posts the same content over and over, where the only point is to get attention and make people angry, rather than doing anything interesting. It could just be that we’re just pessimists, but it feels like the algorithm has rotted our brains. It might be time to start some social-media detoxes, and while we’re at it, maybe start reading again?

There’s so much chatter about “authenticity” and “just being yourself” online these days that it’s kinda starting to lose meaning. Of course you should be yourself online, but often people mistake being “authentic” with being vulnerable. Some people like to share everything about themselves with their followers, some people don’t! We’ve also seen a lot of people conflate being authentic with just being an asshole. At the end of the day, it’s important to stay true to who YOU are in every moment, and what YOU want to share, rather than what some rando on the internet tells you is “real” authenticity.
What the hell does “authenticity” even mean? [0:55]

Maybe you’ve heard already, but prominent podcaster Andrew Huberman, was recently exposed for having relationships with 6 different women at once. And while there’s nothing technically “illegal” about what he’s done, it’s a really shitty move done by someone who claims to have high integrity, and it rubs us the wrong way. We’re not big believers in the concept that how you do one thing is how you do everything, but how are we supposed to respect a man that has shown he doesn’t really respect the women in his life? No one is perfect, but when you’re a public figure, the way you act has a big impact on how your work is perceived, and this is one mistake we can’t really look past.

We’re not at young as we once were, and as much as we hate to admit it, our bodies are changing. That means making peace with the fact that the way we once worked out no longer works for us, and figuring out new ways to stay fit. It’s hard af to let go of the ways things used to be, but staying the same forever can do more harm than good. Nowadays we prioritize managing our physical + emotional stress, putting on muscle, and letting the small things add up. Just because working out looks different now doesn’t mean what we’re doing is worse.

We’ve been on a sober-curious kick lately, so who better to talk to than someone who’s built a community for sober women and has been sober herself for 11 years and counting? Today, Danny interviews Courtney Andersen, founder of Sober Vibes, about her journey to sobriety and the challenges and joys of living an alcohol-free life. We discuss the decision to quit drinking, finding fun without alcohol, the cultural shift towards sobriety, and how to navigate social outings without alcohol. We also talk about re-defining relapse and a shame-free approach to sobriety. Life is hard enough, with or without drinking, and we’re all better for having these conversations openly and compassionately.

Instagram is rolling out a new feature that defaults to keeping news and political content off of our feeds, and it got us thinking, is it irresponsible to ignore current events? Unfortunately, many news sources are produced with biases, headlines are manufactured to outrage rather than inform, and falsified information is getting harder and harder to differentiate from what’s “real.” And not only that, but after years of getting everything from social media algorithms, we’re all primed to see and hear things we already agree with. Whenever we face problems in our lives, we tend to crave complicated solutions over easy ones. Somehow we think complexity is more likely to give us a result—unfortunately, while simple is boring, it’s also effective. No one wants to hear that the solution to losing weight is eating less. Instead we look to fad diets or new workout techniques, and it takes us even longer to reach our goals. We’re so caught up in optimizing everything that we forget to perfect the basics. We’ve been holding it down for our loved ones for so long, and we’re caretakers by nature, but maybe it’s time to ask who’s taking care of us? When you have an audience of any kind, a decision must be made—do you keep yourself relatable and friendly to all, or do you out your own self on a pedestal to keep people coming back for more? For the former, some might argue that this leaves you “too” relatable, and at risk of your audience losing respect for you. On the other hand, the latter might leave you seeming stiff, unapproachable, and with a superiority complex. Danny and Jill ponder this dichotomy and wonder what the best path is for handling the influencer-consumer relationship. (This episode is a re-run. Originally published in 2019.)

Grief demands to be felt, and in many ways it needs to be witnessed. Grief doesn’t have a specific look, nor does it have an expiration date, but there are some types of grief that might seem uncommon or “wrong” to feel, which can leave us stuck with these feelings without any way to process them. That’s disenfranchised grief—grief that isn’t openly acknowledged on a societal or personal level. Maybe you have felt some disenfranchised grief, and in this episode Danny shares some of the commonly ignored types of grief to let you know that if you’ve been hurt by any of these experiences, you are’t alone and that how you feel matters.

We all want to be loved in different ways, so before you go buy towels for your partner for Valentine’s Day, make sure it’s something they’d love.

There’s a lot to be said about “getting in the room” and surrounding yourself with people who can challenge and elevate you as a business owner or person, but at what point does it become elitism? At what point is the obsession with surrounding yourself with the “right” people performative and just for chasing clout? We’ve been entrepreneurs for a long time, and unfortunately, we see a lot of transactional relationships and judgement against people who aren’t deemed successful enough, whatever that even means. For us, our genuine relationships mean everything, and we aren’t going to abandon the people we care about just because they aren’t the “right” level of successful. Yuck.

There will be times in our lives when we are faced with a tough decision, be it personal, business, financial, or otherwise. When we come to these crossroads, we feel lost. What if we make the wrong decision? What if we pick the wrong thing and our lives fall apart? We’ll let you in on a little secret: there is no “right” and there is no “wrong.” Decisions get made, and we figure out what comes next, no matter what. Whether we like it or not, our society is hyper-fixated on how women look, act, and exist in this world. If you’re single, you’re looked down upon. If you’re married, a lot of your success is attributed to your husband. If you aren’t pretty, you get over-looked. But we all know looks can fade and not even marriage is without risk of ending. It’s kind of like we’re damned if we do, and we’re damned if we don’t. It’s not that we resent the urge to feel pretty—of course we want to look and feel good—but don’t you sometimes wonder how much farther along in life you could be if your looks weren’t the most important thing about you (at least in society’s eyes)?

As a child, she was told that her brain was “imbalanced” and she’d always have to take meds to feel okay, but as of October os 2022, she hasn’t taken any sort of medication for mental health, and doesn’t see that changing any time soon. It wasn’t an overnight journey, and it entailed some socially taboo and sometimes-frowned upon tactics, but she has never felt better. In a world where we’re constantly being bombarded with distractions and anxieties, our mental health is at an all-time low. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, and ADHD are being reported in record numbers and it all feels so impossible to fix. Luckily for us, we got to chat with Dr. Laura Gouge, a naturopathic physician who works with women like all of us to treat our mental health problems, especially ADHD, holistically. We’re not against medication here, but our gut health, hormones, and nervous system all impact our focus and if we can work to understand the root causes of our attention struggles, we’re halfway to fixing them and feeling more focused and satisfied every single day.

Shakespeare once asked the question, “what’s in a name?” and lately we’ve been asking ourselves the same thing. After learning that her ex-husband is getting remarried and then running into him and his new fiancee (all in the same week!), Danny has been rethinking what it means to share a last name with her ex. Changing (or not changing) your last name when you get married is always a personal choice, especially because our names, in a way, become a part of our identities. Sharing a last name with your partner is almost like playing for the same team, but when that team is no linger one you want to play for, shit gets complicated.

Our value systems are deeply personal and influence almost everything we do in our lives. We all have core values, whether they’re obvious to us or not. Getting clear on what our values are can help us find direction in work, play, love, and life. It’s often said that you teach people how to treat you, and with a defined set of values, you get to set the tone for your interactions and future choices. Not all things in this life can be important, and when you know what your core values are, you have the freedom to focus on what really matters to you.

One thing the holidays bring about are those damn holiday parties, and what’s even worse than having to go to a work holiday party is choosing an outfit for them—what the hell does “smart casual” even mean?! Then, of course, you have to layer on what your parter is wearing too. Should you coordinate outfits? Will they dress too casually and embarrass you? If they show up looking sloppy, how does that reflect on you? The way we see it, the more direction we can get, the better, just as long as we get to wear what makes us the most comfortable.

Have you ever had a partner so rough around the edges that they need some rehabilitation to be a passable partner, only for the relationship to end and all the work you put in goes to benefit some other woman? We’ve fallen for the project-boyfriend more times than we’re proud of, but there’s nothing more bitter-sweet (and a little bit rage-inducing) than watching your ex go be a better partner for someone else using all the things you taught them. It happens to the best of us, but if you keep falling for the same types of men, hate to say it, but it might be a you problem 😳

We’ve talked about feeling insecure over your partner’s ex relationships before—and believe us, it’s normal to feel that way—but there’s another layer of insecurity and jealousy to work though when it comes to the different traditions and milestones they experienced together. Your partner can’t undo the past and they can’t un-experience the things they have, so don’t hold it against them. Just because your partner went to a certain restaurant or did a certain activity in their past, doesn’t make it meaningless and un-special when they do it with you. As women, it used to be true that the worst insult someone could throw at us was “you’re going to die childless and without a man’s love,” but it’s not quite a threat anymore. More and more women are finding happiness and fulfillment on their own, and the days of “needing” a man to take care of us are long gone. Don’t take it the wrong way, we really do love men, but we’ve seen too many women in our lives lose everything because they depended on a man who didn’t have their best interest at heart. So many of us are fulfilling the traditional female AND male roles now, but many men refuse to step up and do the same. Maybe we don’t really need them anymore 💁🏻♀️

According to some men (and we all know how reliable they can be 🙄) most women will have a partner in mind as a back-up option if the relationship they’re currently in doesn’t work out. We can’t deny that the fantasy of feeling like we could make any man from our past drop everything and run away because they’re obsessed with us sure sounds fun, but truthfully, there’s no person we’d even want to keep “on the hook” like that. The grass isn’t always greener and we know that some other romantic partner won’t magically fix our lives. But hey, maybe we’re the outliers here and you really do have a Plan B. We’re in our zero-fucks era 💅 Over the last few years on the internet it’s felt like we have to be careful with every little thing we say, lest someone take offense to something innocently said. But lately, we just don’t have the bandwidth to care anymore. We can’t monitor every move we make, and when we spend so much time trying to please everyone, we limit the impact we can make to the people who actually care and limit our own realities. We feel better when we’re working hard and striving for something more, so we’re done apologizing for being ambition and we’re done giving a fuck about always saying the “right” thing.

Today Jill is talking to Kim Schaper, metabolism and hormone expert for women over 35, about how our bodies change as we get older and what we can do to feel our best along the way. There’s a moment right before you end a relationship that might be the perfect opportunity to destroy the status quo and rebuild from scratch. Buuuuut just because you’re in this “destruction mode” doesn’t mean this plan will work every time. It may sound like a great idea—starting over again—but sometimes change comes a little too late, and you can’t erase the past and certain hurts. Relationships can bring out the best and the worst in people, and being together doesn’t stop us from growing, even if that means growing apart. As much as we wish there was, there’s no one piece of relationship advice to solve all problems, but as long as you stay open and honest and communicate clearly, you’ll never regret trying, no matter what the outcome is.

As technology and media develop further and become more important parts of our lives, our attention is getting spread thin. As a result, we’ve all become pretty bad listeners. You probably don’t even realize it—most people tend to believe they’re much better at listening than they actually are—but very few people feel truly listened to and understood. We think we’re pretty self-aware of our attention habits, but even we find ourselves reaching for our phones and distraction every few seconds. Is the secret to success as simple as making your bed? It’s been said that cleaning is the ultimate life-hack—declutter your desk to declutter your mind, clean up your finances to make even more money, make your bed and you’re on the fast-track to success. Sure, it sounds nice in theory but like most soundbytes in personal development, there’s more than meets the eye. Sure, cleaning up your life might set you up for success, but is that really the thing that’ll make or break you? There are just as many successful people who make their bed every morning as there are who just roll out of bed and start the day. It’s a great first step, but it’s not the only thing that matters. The real question is, what’s the first step *you* need to take to get you to the next level?

It’s easy to feel all good when everything’s all good… but having an abundant mindset is a big ask when money is tight or business isn’t doing well. When our finances feel out of control, how the hell are we supposed to yank ourselves out of scarcity?! While we can’t control everything in life, sometimes the answer lies in focusing on the things you do have power over, including bettering yourself, in order to build the confidence you need. Sometimes life can throw a wrench in our plans, but trusting ourselves to figure out whatever comes our way is the best way to find abundance again.

Is it just us, or does everyone seem to make everything about them nowadays? Look, we aren’t calling everybody a narcissist (or maybe we are…) but it seems like anytime we talk about ourselves, someone out there gets mad that we didn’t take into account their very specific situation. We know it’s impossible to please everyone, but lately it feels impossible to please anyone. Posting about your life online is vulnerable and haters come with the territory, but has social media become a zero-sum game? Does anybody win this "game"? Does any of this even matter?

We’ve seen something interesting, and maybe you have too, but there seems to be a cultural shift away from drinking alcohol. After our marriages ended, we spent a lot more time drinking than we’d care to admit, but lately things feel a little bit different. The pull to drink feels less and less strong, and we aren’t the only people who seem to be feeling it. Alcohol is a poison, and even though it can create some fun times, maybe it’s for the best that we pull away. But hey, if we still want a cocktail, you know we’re gonna have one, just maybe a little more mindfully this time around.

We talk a lot about communication on this podcast, but can you blame us? So many struggles and conflicts in our lives and relationships could be easily prevented or solved if we just communicated openly. No one is a mind reader and we can’t expect anyone—and especially our partners—to read the subtext of the things we say if we don’t communicate our feelings explicitly. Relationships are made up of little moments, and when you give each other the best chance at succeeding, you set your entire relationship up for success.

Should men have rights? The jury is still out on that one, but for now it seems like they still do and one of those rights we can’t seem to take away from them is social media use. We’re kidding (of course!) but we’ve been noticing a lot of issues when it comes to some men’s use of social media. Everywhere you turn there’s someone posting sexualized pictures of themselves—and good for them! The problem isn’t the photos, it’s the fact that some men in relationships don’t seem to care when the act of looking at these pictures upsets their partner. Old triggers die hard, and even if your new boo hasn’t done anything to give you concern, you might still be holding on to anxiety and hyper-vigilance from your past. Or even worse—you could be attracting the same type of unhealthy relationship over and over again. For better or for worse, you can’t run from the past, so you’ll have to heal one way or another. There’s a trend going around on some corners of the internet defining people—usually, defining women—by their Sexual Market Value. Your SMV is defined by things like physique, income, and even the number of people you’ve slept with and to be honest, it’s a load of bullshit. The qualities that make someone attractive are so subjective, and besides, we shouldn’t be basing our worth based on how fuckable we may or may not be to some dude named Brad with a Twitter account. We all know social media is curated and often shows just a highlight reel of everyone’s lives. But we’ve been sharing our lives online for so long that now even the good shit brings haters. Sharing even one happy moment earns a passive aggressive, “Must be nice!” from the peanut gallery. So when good things happen, sometimes we’re hesitant to share! Do we have to earn the right to be happy? And who are we even posting the good shit for?
Who are you sharing for? [4:21]

Nobody wants to date themselves—our partners are different than us, and that’s a great thing! …Well, usually. But sometimes the people we date want different things out of life, and not like major deal breakers, but in the small things, like how we spend money, how much we like to go out to eat, what time to go to bed, and so on. Compromise comes easily at the begging of a relationship, but as time goes on you might start to feel a little resentful at just how differently you and your partner want to be living. Does compromise without resentment even exist?

Relationship anxiety is real and happens to the best of us, but at some point it might be worth asking yourself if your insecurities come from within, or if your partner’s behavior is what’s really making you anxious. Inconsistency breeds anxiety and even though we’re all for taking personal responsibility most of the time, it’s just not always your fault! If you’re unsure whether the anxiety is real or not, take a look at the patterns in your relationship and your communication to see if your partner is doing just fine or if they’re just kind of an asshole. Let’s hope it’s the first option!

After 2020, so many people had to transition from working in an office to working at home. We’ve been self-employed for a while now so we’ve mastered the art of working from home, but there’s a real learning curve. Without the normal constrictions of an office, there’s no clear time to clock-off. Mixed with the fact that there is always more to be done, you might fall in to the trap of working 24/7. And don’t even get us started on the distractions… If you have dreams of self-employment or you’re yet to master the work-from-home flow, we’ve got some tips to get you on the right track.

We’ve been hot on setting boundaries for a while now, but it seems like people who aren’t in the personal development space are starting to talk more about them. The problem is, a lot of people get the concept of boundaries a little mixed up. What someone sets as a “boundary” is actually more like just being an asshole. Boundaries aren’t about making people do what you want, they’re about monitoring your own reactions and behaviors. If you find yourself resenting everyone and everything in your life, it doesn’t mean you should start telling everyone what to do. Sometimes the best option is just to walk away.
Do you have boundaries? Or are you just an asshole? [1:49]

When you’ve been coaches for as long as we have, the things we once thought we knew are different now. As we learn more, old modes of thinking and doing things no longer work, and we’re faced with a decision: double down on the things we’ve always done, or change it all and adapt. It’s terrifying when your deeply held beliefs become untrue, but it’s also against our value system to keep teaching things we no longer believe in. After a girls weekend in Vegas with her mom, Jill received some interesting comments about showing “too much skin” in front of her mom. Correct us if we’re wrong but our moms literally made us, so why should we be ashamed to show our bodies in front of them? Maybe it’s a fear of disappointing our parents, or maybe some of just want to be spared from judgmental comments, but shit… we’re all adults here! If we can’t be ourselves—tight dresses, swear words, and all—in front of our parents, then aren’t we denying our family the chance to truly know us? Seems like a lose-lose situation to us.

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase, “Why buy the cow when you can have the milk for free?” (Ew.) Besides the obvious issue of comparing women to cows, it brings up an interesting question: are there things that a wife does (or should do) that a girlfriend does not? And should women be holding out on certain tasks until we finally get that ring? Barf! Every relationship is different and if you want to be married, that’s great! But there isn’t some magical difference between married and un-married. The way your relationship looks only needs to matter to the people inside it. Everyone else can mind their own damn business.

As former athletes and fitness professionals—and hell, just as women in general—it’s easy to tie our identities and self-worth to our bodies. But as we all know, bodies are constantly changing and sometimes those changes are well out of our control, due to illness or injury. When your core identity (or worse—your income) is wrapped up in what your body looks like or does, it can send you spiraling. Trust us, we’ve been there. As shitty as it is, an injury or illness might be exactly the thing you need to teach you acceptance, patience, and show you that you’re so much more than your body.

Sexiness isn’t defined by one look, clothing style, or age. Sexiness is more of an energy than anything else, and it’s within our power to reclaim our sexiness whenever we want. There’s no such thing as being “too old” to be sexy, or “not lean enough,” or any other prerequisite. I mean, we wake up and choose to be sexy every day! If you find yourself wanting to own your sexy power a little bit more, remember: sexiness is an inside job. You’re already sexy, you just need to own it.

It’s been almost 2 years since Danny’s mom passed away, and we’ve had some time to reflect on what it means to lose a parent. Grief is complicated and weird and all-consuming and even though so many people have gone through it, there still isn’t a “right” way to experience loss. Life, and especially loss, is never quite what you imagine it would be, and nothing you could ever prepare for. If you’ve lost someone, or will lose someone soon, we see you, we hear you, we’re with you.

Seems straight forward enough, but what happens when the person you’re trying to build connection and intimacy with has a conflicting Love Language? Is your relationship doomed? Of course not! As in all things, a good relationship comes down to communication, and getting clear on exactly what you need in order to feel loved by your partner. If you asked us if we supports men’s rights, we’d probably say yes. Of course, only if the “rights” you’re talking about is the right to shut the fuck up. Okay, okay just kidding. We have no real hate for men at all, but sometimes we find ourselves wondering why we should care about the struggles men are facing when they’re the ones who are hurting themselves (and women too!). Who better to talk about the problems men are facing than an actual, real life man?! We’re so excited to chat with Dr. Jade Teta about the (fake) problems that men are dealing with today.

There’s a societal expectation that when you get married, you merge your finances. So what happens to couples in long term, committed relationships without marriage? Finances are a deeply personal, and oftentimes tricky, subject to talk about. Everyone has different money rules and expectations that affect how we split expenses and costs with our partners. Throw in the unreliable income of entrepreneurship and things get even stickier. There’s no “right way” to deal with money, but there’s never a wrong time to have an open conversation about it with your partner—whether you’re married or not.

Maybe we’re taking social media a little too seriously, but getting an unfollow from someone you know irl feels like a stab in the back. Logically, we know social media isn’t “real” and people have the right to see whatever kind of posts they want, but that doesn’t stop us from getting our feelings hurt—or the reverse: feeling guilty when we’re the ones doing the unfollowing. We may be more connected to others than ever before, but there are no social rules and norms for online behavior and it’s got us feeling some type of way.

We talk a lot about what influencer are and are not obligated to share, and when someone goes through a big body transformation, should they tell their following how they got there? Of course nobody owes anything to anyone, but when you make a career out of sharing your life online, the rules change. People look to the influencers they follow for advice, and if you’re using your body to sell a product, we think you should be upfront about how you got where you are. Are we too judgmental? We’ll be the first to admit that we might have judged more than our fair share in our younger years—not just judging others, but ourselves too. So much judgement comes from internal shame and a lack of empathy, and it can turn ugly quickly. But something has shifted as we’ve gotten older, learned about ourselves, and experienced more life. Instead of leading with judgement and projection of our insecurities, we try to keep a curious and compassionate heart in all of our interaction. We’re not perfect by any means, but when those hits of judgements come up now, we know to challenge those base-level reactions.

Relationships issues can come up at any time and we don’t always want to deal with that shit! But are we burying our heads in the sand or living in denial if we don’t want to face those issues right away? Sure there’s never really a “right” time to deal with things that come up in our relationships, but there’s definitely a “wrong” time. Besides, being able to take a moment to calm down and gain some perspective can really make those tough conversations easier, rather than having to deal with every little thing right away. The “right time” isn’t now, or later, or any time in between. The right time to handle relationship issues is whenever we fucking feel like it.
