- 43 - Overcoming burnout and post-traumatic stress with Wendy Power Stoten
In this episode, Tammy chats with Wendy Power Stoten about her work supporting frontline professionals experiencing burnout and post-traumatic stress. They discuss; what Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is and the science behind it, how she has been using it to help frontline professionals in health and emergency services overcome COVID-related burnout and post-traumatic stress, and her vision for providing EFT to more frontline professionals in the future.
From the beginning of her career, Wendy has sought to help her clients get rid of the blocks that are stopping them from getting the most out of their lives. Because of her commitment to this mission, Wendy has become a practitioner of Emotional Freedom Technique - a fast, effective, and gentle technique that alleviates stress and anxiety (as well as other symptoms) by tapping on meridian points. After responding to the need for support by frontline professionals in the health and emergency services, Wendy and her team of EFT specialists realised that more work needed to be done - and that’s why she created FAST. Built on values similar to our own, FAST are using their expertise to provide EFT that is tailored to their clients and are values-led. It has been a great privilege to have Wendy as a guest on our podcast.
Wendy has more than 35 years’ experience as a Language/Business/Life Skills trainer and Energy Psychology practitioner. Having graduated with BA Honours in Social and Cultural history from UEA in the 80’s, she began a career in corporate training which took her to Japan, South America, Asia and several European countries to live and work. On marrying, moving to Cornwall in 2000, and soon after having a son, she began to pursue her interest in the rapidly developing world of Neuroscience and Epigenetics, to which EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and its extension Matrix-Reimprinting so perfectly lend themselves. She is trained to advance level EFT and MR, specialising in client trauma.
Wendy set up FAST in April 2020 in response to the Covid-19 mental health crisis, after being inundated herself with requests for help from overwhelmed healthcare and emergency workers. FAST grew quickly to 30 experienced EFT practitioners, providing fast, effective, free of charge online sessions to those accessing their support nationwide. With increasing signs of PTSD/R among clients, FAST is needed more than ever, and Wendy is passionate that FAST meets this growing demand as efficiently as possible.

Thu, 29 Jul 2021 - 39min - 42 - Finding Freedom with Patricia Wagner
(TW: this episode contains discussion of rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse)
In this episode, Tammy chats with Patricia Wagner about her process of finding freedom after her tumultuous adolescence. They discuss the traumatic experiences of Patricia’s younger years that led her to a life of drug consumption and domestic abuse, the people that supported and motivated her to change her life around, and how both of their pasts have led Tammy and Patricia to a shared mission of positively impacting the lives of others.
Patricia is a successful woman, living a beautiful life that she loves, but it wasn’t always that way. Adopted at the age of 10, she was separated from her parents and moved to France, where she was forbidden from telling anyone at school or elsewhere about her real parents. It was a tough reality for a 10-year-old, and the pressure of living with this secret led her to start running away from home from the age of 14-15 and becoming involved with gang members in the neighbourhood. What followed next was a chapter filled with sexual abuse, drug consumption and domestic abuse. But Patricia didn’t let her past define her, and with the help of people supporting and rooting for her, has become the successful woman that she is today.
Patricia is a recognised success coach for Elites and Experts, as well as a TV producer, professional singer, actress and the Founder of C-Success Academy. She is on a mission to help people from all backgrounds redefine themselves and their brand by giving them the strategies, secrets, and tools for success so they can create the big impact they desire in the world.
Despite living many years of instability and abuse, Patricia fought for her freedom and throughout this episode she reminds us that:
“Your broken past does not have to be your future”
In this series 5 of the Training 4 Influence podcast, we’re talking to guests who’ve had their lives changed by professionals who have gone above and beyond to ensure that they were listened to and that their needs were met. Wed, 14 Jul 2021 - 47min - 41 - 'Heart shaped decisions change lives' with Graham Frost
In this episode, Tammy chats with Graham Frost about the power of making ‘heart-shaped decisions’. They discuss Graham’s turbulent teenage years and how they have shaped who he’s become, why more people should follow their feelings before their thoughts, and the gratitude he has for the professionals within the Probation Service and National Health Service that changed his life.
After leaving his church and family home at the age of 17, Graham was left to fend for himself with no guidance or support. Two years, and a few bad decisions later, Graham found himself in a borstal. It was here that he was given a choice by one of the officers, to keep his “nose clean” or continue on a path towards criminality. It was that proposition, alongside the support of many frontline professionals who believed in him, that led Graham to make the ‘heart-shaped decision’ to turn his life around.
Since then, Graham has been following his feelings rather than his thoughts in whatever decisions he makes. Like Graham, Tammy also left home in her teenage years. Having had to fend for herself since the age of 15, Tammy experienced a turbulent adolescence. But having both experienced an immense amount of adversity at such young ages, Graham and Tammy both recognise the importance of frontline professionals in changing their life trajectories.
Graham Frost is a professional speaker who delivers inspiring talks, mainly to young people about Heart-Shaped Decisions. Graham grew up in a very strict church, and escaped when he was 17. That meant leaving his family and support network behind. By the age of 19, he was in prison for theft. While there he was helped to make the Heart-Shaped Decision to give up his life of petty crime.
Then in his early 20s, Graham was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He fought it, and won, with the help and support of the NHS.
A few years ago, Graham was asked to give a talk about his story to a group of young people. Afterwards some of the audience approached him and told him that he was inspiring. That was when Graham knew that he had to share his story, to help young people make the right decisions for them early in their lives. Graham speaks to groups of young people in schools, colleges, and universities, including alternative provision and young offenders.

In this episode, Tammy chats with Noel about his 15 years in prison and how support from two frontline professionals (and developing his own yoga practice) helped him turn his life around. They discuss Noel’s own experience with professionals who saw potential with him when few others did, the potential for prisons to act as a space to rehabilitate inmates and not merely punish them and Noel gives his own advice for struggling and burned-out professionals.

He talks about loss, the journey to success and staying on track, as well as how the principles of growth apply within organisations and the significant impact of this. It is from his lived-experience that Noel has become extremely forward-thinking, with the attitude that personal growth can be found in any of us and within any environment.

Wed, 16 Jun 2021 - 34min - 39 - Delivering training is a privilege with Jo Lovell
In this episode, Tammy chats with Jo Lovell about what a privilege it is to deliver training and how it can change lives. They discuss how Jo’s own personal story shaped the way she delivers training, her approach to delivering training using her own lived experiences and the importance of continuous learning as an expert facilitator.
Right from her earliest memories, Jo was always the one who could be encouraged to shout about any injustice, which led her into a career working with young people who experienced challenges themselves and challenged those around them.
It was while working with young people who had and were experiencing safeguarding nightmares, that she was going home to her own. Despite her relationship giving her an amazing son, it left her with her soul and passion for life suffocated. However, she managed to escape once she realised her worth and built her life and soul and parenting skills back up and got her happily ever after. Jo’s new life began at 40!
As a result of this lived experience and her teaching experience, Jo is passionate about giving a 'voice to the voiceless' in the area of domestic abuse and working from a recovery, trauma-informed framework. She facilitates mental health courses with the Recovery College and facilitates courses for an organisation called Reducing the Risk of Domestic Abuse. She is currently facilitating a new domestic abuse recovery programme designed by Natalie Collins called Own My Life, where she is seeing amazing results from female victims moving into being survivors.
“I like to believe I can change the world one starfish at a time and if
I can do a bucket load in one go, even better!”
Jo Lovell
Jo is a recent graduate of the Training 4 Influence Train the Trainer programme.

Mon, 12 Apr 2021 - 36min - 35 - Delivering engaging, effective and memorable training with Alan Savill
In this episode Tammy will be chatting to Alan Savill about delivering engaging, effective and memorable training that will change lives. They discuss Alan’s own training course and his motivation for creating it, the importance of delivering engaging and appealing training sessions and their tips for making training more memorable for delegates.
Alan Savill is an independent trainer who has used his experience as a police officer, offender supervisor and suicide grief coordinator to deliver training for the past 20 years. As well as the momentous milestone of delivering more ‘Reducing Parental Conflict’ training than anyone else in the UK - having aided 2,500 professionals since 2019 - he has been recognised by the Early Intervention Foundation as a major factor in the success of the programme.
After experiencing loss in his own family, Alan founded Ian’s Chain, a charity through which he has achieved 60 successful interventions with suicidal people including those preparing or attempting to take their own lives. Not only has his charity helped over 80 grieving families to date, but it has raised numerous donations to causes dear to Ian’s heart, in his memory, including homelessness, DV and DA and paid for 60 cataract operations.
Alan is currently working on his own course surrounding the ‘Grief Path for Children and Young People After Suicide’ where he aims to get professionals to really understand the complexities or grief and give much needed support to young people.
In series 4 of the Training 4 Influence podcast, we’re talking all about training. Our aim is to explore the immeasurable impact of training within this sector, so we’ll be talking to trainers from a variety of backgrounds within the criminal justice, social care and charity sectors, about the training they deliver, their personal 'why' and their own best practice when it comes to delivering influential training.

Every training day is precious and, in sectors where case-loads are increasing, employees are burning out and every decision impacts lives, it is paramount that we upskill and positively influence outcomes at every opportunity.
We hope you enjoy listening to this discussion about why, having both had extensive careers delivering training courses to social care professionals, both Alan and Tammy believe that story-telling, adaptation and interactive training is the key to creating memorable, effective and engaging courses that leave delegates feeling inspired.

They discuss the importance of operational expertise when delivering training, how reminding yourself of your ‘why’ helps you deliver better services and the way she’s developed her training to better impact the end user.
Mel Cant has worked in social housing for over 20 years, in a variety of areas, including repairs, voids, asset management, leasehold, housing management, tenancy enforcement, anti-social behaviour, allocations and homelessness. During this time, Mel undertook a degree in law and was called to the Bar 20 years ago but, rather than practise as a Barrister, she chose to remain in frontline housing services, where she felt her skills could be put to better use.
For the last 15 years, Mel has been the Homeless Review Officer for City of York Council and has undertaken Homeless Reviews for Scarborough, Craven, Selby, Hambleton and Ryedale. She works as a Housing Consultant and is proudly one of the Local Government Association’s Housing Advisers, undertaking (over the last three years) several projects for local authorities around homelessness. She is also a member of Middle Temple, the Chartered Institute of Housing and Social Housing Law Association.
Mel has provided training for local authorities and housing associations in all aspects of social housing law over the last 15 years. However, within the last 12 months, following the demise of face-to-face training (due to COVID-19), Mel has set up a new training organisation, Melcantraining, which focuses on delivering online training on social housing law.
In series 4 of the Training 4 Influence podcast, we’re talking all about training. Our aim is to explore the immeasurable impact of training within this sector, so we’ll be talking to trainers from a variety of backgrounds within the criminal justice, social care and charity sectors, about the training they deliver, their personal ‘why’ and their own best practice when it comes to delivering influential training.
Training 4 Influence is a creative solution, a methodology that can transform any training session, weaving values-led ‘golden threads’ that influence organisational outcomes throughout every training session.
Every training day is precious and, in sectors where case-loads are increasing, employees are burning out and every decision impacts lives, it is paramount that we upskill and positively influence outcomes at every opportunity.

Mon, 08 Feb 2021 - 44min - 30 - Anonymous and honest, an assistant principal shares her story of burnout
In this special bumper episode of the Training 4 Influence podcast, Tammy will be talking to a Secondary School Assistant Principal about how the pandemic has affected the emotional resilience of the children, staff and herself. They discuss the devastating effects the pandemic has had on the education sector, the amazing work schools and staff members are doing to continue to support their students, and the long-term consequences the pandemic may have on the future of teaching.
Welcome to series 3 of the Training 4 Influence Podcast. This series, as requested by you, our listeners, will be focused on emotional resilience, how to build and maintain it, and why it’s so important for those working in the criminal justice, social care and charity sector.
Without emotional resilience frontline professionals are at risk from suffering from burnout, vicarious trauma and significant mental health issues - we’ll be sitting down with guests, in different job roles, to hear real stories of both avoiding burnout and rebuilding after it. Our aim is to share positive thoughts and ideas that will inspire, protect and motivate frontline professionals.
When the pandemic struck in March 2020 and schools were forced to close, this Assistant Principal, along with many others in her position across the UK, was inundated with constant fires in which she needed to put out. Having to overhaul existing systems on assessments, health and safety, and examinations, she found that she was frequently working 70-hour weeks to ensure her school, staff and students were equipped with the tools needed to stay safe and maintain their education.
After reaching a point of burnout at the end of 2020, in which she was forced to take time off work due to the physical side effects of the stress she was put under, she speaks to us about the dire state of the education sector, across the board. Our guest today has chosen to remain anonymous so that she can speak freely about the issues at hand - but we hope you enjoy listening to this honest discussion from which we can all learn from.

Wed, 23 Dec 2020 - 53min - 24 - Putting Yourself First w/ Gethin Jones
In this episode Tammy will be talking to Gethin Jones about how he’s worked to maintain his emotional resilience throughout his career in the criminal justice sector, and continues to do so while running his own company guiding prison workers, local authorities and the third sector to unlock their potential. They discuss: the emotional intelligence required to recognise the resilience of your staff, the importance of balancing human to human relationships while maintaining professional boundaries and acknowledging the support we need to maintain emotional resilience.
Gethin Jones is an inspirational speaker, trainer, coach and published author. He has a unique experience of the social care and criminal justice system after growing up within the care system and spending time in foster care, children’s homes and secure units. Gethin received his 1st criminal conviction at the age of 11 and first custodial sentence at 14. He ended up spending 8 years of his life behind a prison wall and developed a dependancy on heroin. In 2006 Gethin went through a fundamental shift and became a senior manager within the same local authority that was his corporate parent. In 2018 he published his personal development book ‘Unconscious Incarceration: How to Break Out, Be Free and Unlock Your Potential’ and in January 2021 he will be releasing his second book ‘How to F**k Up and Still Succeed: Think It, Say It, Do It and Unlock Your Potential’.
We hope you enjoy listening to this discussion about why, after experiencing burnout and a lack of emotional resilience while working in the social care and criminal justice system, both Gethin and Tammy believe that the first person we have to look out for is ourselves.
Training 4 Influence is a creative solution, a methodology that can transform any training session, weaving values led ‘golden threads’ that influence organisational outcomes throughout every training session.
Every training day is precious, sectors where case-loads are increasing, employees are burning out and every decision impacts lives, it's paramount that we upskill and positively influence outcomes at every opportunity.

Wed, 23 Dec 2020 - 42min - 23 - The importance of tailoring your training w/ Mike Wrigglesworth
In this episode, Tammy speaks to Mike Wigglesworth about the importance of tailoring when delivering courses. Delivering tailored training is one of the core steps of the Training 4 Influence methodology. We want to ensure that every course that is delivered is tailored to the sector, organisation and customer group, so that the subject matter is clear, it adheres to legislation, and is written to exceed industry quality standards.
While learning about our methodology Mike found a particular affinity with the tailored step, so we knew he was perfectly placed for today’s discussion. In this episode they discuss: the value a tailored course brings to both the organisations you are delivering to and the delegates within the room, how Mike’s previous experience as a solicitor helped him realise the importance of tailoring courses, and the things you need to think about to ensure that the course you’re delivering provides the most impact to the specific needs of the delegates attending.
Mike is a recently retired solicitor of over thirty years, with almost 27 of those years spent working in the CPS. During that time, he prosecuted cases in both the Magistrates and Crown Courts and reviewed files across the criminal offences spectrum, including sexual abuse and murder. He was the national CPS policy lead on vulnerable and intimidated witnesses, as well as on the intermediary scheme. He also managed a team of lawyers covering advocacy in the Crown Court and the review of serious sexual offences.
Throughout his time at the CPS, he delivered training on child abuse prosecutions, dealing with vulnerable and intimidated witnesses in the criminal justice system and a number of other topics.
Training 4 Influence is a methodology – or blueprint – for delivering training in a way that maximises the opportunity for learning. It comprises of four steps that make the methodology what it is: expert, tailored, engaging and values-led.
Through delivering with these steps we aim to maximise opportunities for learning using a person and service-centred approach; add real value to the organisation and individual delegates, to provide a tangible return on investment and help to re-motivate and refresh delegates.
Training 4 Influence helps us all, facilitators, delegates, service users and organisations be the best we can be.

Sun, 06 Dec 2020 - 31min - 22 - The importance of expertise in training w/ James McCarthy
In this episode, Tammy speaks to James McCarthy about the expert element of the Training 4 Influence methodology. They discuss the value of expertise when delivering training, define what is an expert, and explain why you might be an expert even though you're scared of calling yourself one.
James McCarthy is one of the founding facilitators at Taye Training, so his training influenced the development of the Training 4 Influence methodology. Throughout his training James utilises his connected experience working with people convicted of sexual offences, as a youth worker for a local authority and in charities, to inform the way that he delivers sessions.
James specialises in service user focused training; identifying and developing skills to communicate, support and manage high-risk service users with multiple needs, implementing a person-centred approach, in order to develop and maintain productive relationships with each service user. He has both a passion for and is a natural when it comes to working with people with a range of complex needs; facilitating their empowerment and supporting them to achieve their potential and recognising their own capabilities.
Training 4 Influence came about because of our frustrations within the sector. Tired of the restrictions, lack of money and siloed working that make it difficult to see through big changes, we started looking at what was already taking place and how we could better it. That’s when we realised that there was an opportunity to make small yet significant changes through the mandatory and specialist training sessions that people were already attending. After many years of using the methodology within our own training company we realised that this was a solution that needed to be shared. Which is why we created the Training 4 Influence programme and wrote our recently published book Transform Your Training: Develop and deliver training that changes lives in the criminal justice, social care and charity sectors.

Mon, 30 Nov 2020 - 42min - 21 - The community behind Training 4 Influence w/ Adriana Talaba
In this episode, Tammy speaks to Adriana Talaba about what she took away from the Training 4 Influence methodology. They talk about what she learned from observing how other facilitators delivered training in the early stages. And her perspective on what she considers the most powerful part of the programme - the community that lies alongside it.
Adriana has a long history of working with people with complex needs, both in the UK and Romania. She has been a frontline professional within various diverse job roles for many years, but today she is a practicing social worker and talking therapist. We are also fortunate to have her facilitate training with us at Taye Training.
Adriana first became interested in training after realising that she’d got to the point in her career where she wanted to give in a different way. While on the look out for a way to apply her expertise to the areas that she is drawn to, she was recommended the Training 4 Influence methodology. She was drawn towards the methodology because it aligned with her own professional values and learning style. And has since, through Taye Training, had the opportunity herself to enable trainees to undertake meaningful learning through delivering influential training.
Training 4 Influence came about because of our frustrations within the sector. Tired of the restrictions, lack of money and siloed working that make it difficult to see through big changes, we started looking at what was already taking place and how we could better it. Thu, 19 Nov 2020 - 24min - 20 - How Values-led Training Can Change Lives w/ Warren Larkin
In this episode, Tammy speaks to Clinical Psychologist Warren Larkin. Both Tammy and Warren are vocal proponents of using a trauma-informed approach when delivering services. So, when it came to releasing the Training 4 Influence book Transform Your Training,Tammy sent the chapter on values-led training over to Warren. In this episode Warren explains why he wishes the Training 4Influence methodology had existed when he first started delivering training, the importance of values-led training and their shared belief that everyone working within this sector must receive training that builds up their emotional resilience.
Warren Larkin is Founder and Managing Director of Warren Larkin Associates. With a background as a Clinical Psychologist, Warren has first-hand experience of working with vulnerable people - he has done most of his clinical work in specialist early intervention services with service users who are experiencing psychosis. In this position, Warren noticed early-on the relationship between childhood adversity and outcomes later in life. He has since undertaken numerous strategic roles, where he has extensive experience of leading transformational change and turnaround as well as developing leadership capacity and capability in complex organisational contexts.
More recently, Warren developed the Routine Enquiry about Adversity in Childhood (REACh) approach as a way of assisting organisations to become more trauma-informed and to train professionals to ask routinely about adversity in their everyday practice. He is now leading the Resilience Task Force, a campaign which is calling on the government to take seriously the mental health implications of the COVID19 pandemic and the subsequent long term effects of those who have experienced trauma during this period.
We hope you enjoy this discussion about why, after decades of experience within this sector, both Tammy and Warren believe values-led training can change lives.
About the methodology
The Training 4 Influence methodology was developed in response to growing pressure within the criminal justice, social care and charity sectors. With people being asked to deliver more for less and services stretched to breaking point, the most vulnerable people in society often don’t receive the support they need and those working in the sector feel overwhelmed and, at times, powerless to deliver what they know is needed.
The methodology is a creative solution that can transform any training session to improve organisational outcomes without costing the delegate or commissioner any more time or money than they are spending now. The method ensures training is delivered in a way that inspires, is relevant, enables learning and meets objectives. This ensures that frontline workers are skilled, knowledgeable and qualified and that they leave sessions enthusing about how their activities in their day job are going to be improved as a result of the training.

Tue, 22 Sep 2020 - 31min - 19 - Elevating your training w/ Sally Fletcher
In this episode, Tammy speaks to Sally Fletcher about the most significant learnings she took away from the Training 4 Influence Train the Trainer programme. They discuss which out of the four-step method Sally resonated with the most, the community and support around Training 4 Influence and why she has already recommended Training 4 Influence to her colleagues delivering safeguarding training.
Sally reflects on the 30 years she spent in the police, and how 17 of those years were as a Safeguarding Sergeant. Throughout her career in the police, Sally was often asked to deliver training, lead conferences and be a guest speaker. Despite being confident in her expertise, Sally had little training on how to deliver effective, quality training.
Now retired, Sally continues to deliver training to the NHS and Police amongst others. Committed to her own professional development and on a mission to be the best trainer she could be Sally found via searching on the internet Training 4 Influence and enrolled on our Train the Trainer programme.
In the Train the Trainer programme, we bring together applicants who recognise the potential that every training session has to allow them to influence the sector that they love.
Registration is now open for the next cohort. https://training4influence.co.uk/join/
As the cohort goes through the programme they are shown how to apply the methodology to the courses they deliver. They have access to our online learning platform, and live training sessions with Tammy and guest experts. They receive a personal mentor and become part of a vibrant online community alongside a peer group of facilitators. We are proud that this programme has led our graduates to leave comments such as:
“The Train the Trainer course was a fantastic experience and an excellent opportunity to learn from one of the best professionals in this field, Tammy Banks… I’m delighted to have found an organisation that actually means what they say in their mission and vision, and they live up to their values.”
In series 2 of the Training 4 Influence podcast, our aim is to help you deliver the best training possible. We explore how to make the most of every single second of a training session. And how to deliver training so that it has added influence.

Mon, 21 Sep 2020 - 33min - 18 - From Detective Sergeant to Facilitator w/ Andy Pollard
In this episode Tammy speaks to Andy Pollard about the most significant learnings he took away from the Training 4 Influence programme, why emotional resilience is important for frontline professionals, and why he recommends Training 4 Influence to his colleagues coming out of the police.
Andy Pollard, a retired Detective Sergeant of the West Yorkshire Police, was unsure about whether training was for him. Accustomed to training that was uncollaborative and dictatorial, he chose to refer to himself as a facilitator rather than a trainer even beforethe Train the Trainer programme. As a professional with decades of experience within the police, there is no doubt that Andy is an expert within his field. Going through the course taught him new techniques and reaffirmed Andy’s training style showing him that he was a facilitator
At Training 4 Influence, we believe that influential training is not about telling delegates what to do and how to do it. Instead, we use our methodology to develop the knowledge and experience that delegates already have. And that is the same for our Train the Trainer programme. Each cohort is filled with professionals from a range of different experiences and expertise. So our methodology does not dictate what you do in your training, instead, it gives you the tools necessary to make it more influential.
We hope you enjoy!

Thu, 27 Aug 2020 - 27min - 17 - The power and potential of training w/ Martin McGill
Training 4 Influence came about because of our frustrations within the sector. Tired of the restrictions, lack of money and siloed working that make it difficult to see through big changes, we started looking at what was already taking place and how we could better that. We realised that there was an opportunity to make small yet significant changes through the mandatory and specialist training sessions that people were already attending. And after many years of using the methodology within our own training company we realised that this was a solution that needed to be shared.
“Good training is like a mirror, it should reflect back to you the better part of yourself”. These words by today’s guest truly encompass what the Training 4 Influence methodology is about. When training is done well it teaches delegates more than just the subject material before them. It can help shape a delegate's viewpoint of their job, the service users they work with and the sector as a whole. Ultimately, influential training provides numerous touch points that lead us to view people in ways that allow service users to not feel judged, to be advocated for and to be viewed as equal.
In today’s episode I talk to Martin McGill, a recent graduate of the Training 4 Influence Train the Trainer programme. We talk about everything from politics, delivering training to parliament, values and why every single training session should deliver added influence

Thu, 20 Aug 2020 - 41min - 16 - How experienced trainers can add influence to their training w/ Steve Sylvan
Although we have been using the Training 4 Influence methodology within our own training company for years, we are proud to be sharing it with as many people as possible. That is why we created the Train the Trainer programme, so that both freelance and internal facilitators can deliver influential training.
Over 12 weeks, we bring together applicants who recognise the potential that every training session has to allow them to influence the sector that they love. As you go through the programme you will be shown how to apply the methodology to the courses you deliver. You will have access to our online learning platform, and live training sessions with Tammy and guest experts. The Train the Trainer course has truly affected the way our delegates have delivered training. But don’t just take our word for it. In this episode we’ll be speaking to Train the Trainer graduate Steve Sylvan about his experience on the programme and his thoughts on the methodology. We discuss his experience as an actor and how that has influenced his training, our passion for supporting people experiencing multiple disadvantages and why no facilitator should deliver, or delegate attend, anything less than exceptional training.

Fri, 14 Aug 2020 - 22min - 15 - Engaging w/ Angie Norden
Many of you will have experienced a training session which has left you feeling unenthused. And if you are like today’s guest host you might have even had a facilitator start the training by saying “this is going to be a really dull day/session”.
At Training 4 Influence we have high expectations for training, because we have seen first-hand how impactful sessions can be when delegates are truly engaged in what they are learning. And this is not by accident, in order for us to keep delegates fully engaged we are intentional in adapting our sessions with different learning styles in mind. That’s why we use theories such as VAK learning styles, and multiple intelligences in order to do so.
Some of you might already know these theories but if not, don’t be daunted. In our book and Train the Trainer programme, we introduce you to learning styles in enough detail to adapt your sessions, but not so much that you become overwhelmed. Once you understand learning styles it will become easy for you to incorporate them into your own training.
And this is important because it is by meeting the needs of all delegates that we create an opportunity to accelerate learning.
In this episode I talk to Angie Norden about the importance of developing engaging training. We discuss our frustrations with training in the past, her favourite learning theories and ultimately how developing engaging training can change your delegates’ experiences and give you reviews such as:
“I was amazed at how interactive it was and we could all still get involved and enjoy the session”
I hope you enjoy!

Tue, 11 Aug 2020 - 34min - 14 - The Theory Behind the Training 4 Influence Methodology w/ Dr Sarah Lewis
The Training 4 Influence methodology serves as a creative solution to the problems this sector faces. And while we have first-hand experience of how this methodology works within our own training company, we wanted to ensure that it had the academic theory to back it up. That is why I asked Dr Sarah Lewis to write an academic paper critically examining the Training 4 Influence methodology to ensure that everything we teach is evidence-informed.
Dr Sarah Lewis is not only the Director of Penal Reform Solutions but the Founder of the Growth Alliance, a movement that promotes personal growth as a way of collectively reducing social harm. She carried out her doctoral studies on therapeutic correctional relationships and since then has focused her efforts on quality practice within correctional contexts.
When I first met Sarah last year, we instantly connected because of a shared vision to create long term, sustainable and transformative change to the lives of people often dismissed by society. That is why, while nervous at first, I knew she was best placed to vigorously assess our methodology from a theoretical perspective.
In this episode I speak to Sarah about the process of assessing the Training 4 Influence methodology and why she not only stands by it, but uses it in her own practice within Penal Reforms Solutions. We talk about the four steps within the methodology: expert, tailored, engaging and values-led, why they are so important, and what ultimately led her to claim that:
“By adopting the methodology of Training 4 Influence, exciting and meaningful training can be adopted, which ultimately empowers practitioners to use their knowledge to transform prison culture.”
I hope you enjoy!

Wed, 05 Aug 2020 - 45min - 13 - Online: How to deliver influential training online
At the beginning of lockdown when it dawned on us that Taye Training would no longer be able to hold in-person training for the foreseeable future we were devastated. You see, we recognised there was an urgent need for training to continue but we weren’t willing to compromise on quality.
I often vent about the damage e-learning has done to the sector and didn’t think training could be done online in an effective way.
However, 4 months and hundreds of live online training sessions later, I am biting back my words and admitting that although static e-learning may not be the solution, there is room for live-online training both during the COVID19 pandemic and in the future.
In this podcast I speak to Beckie Breakwell, not only is she a Training 4 Influence accredited facilitator, she has become the online training lead for Taye Training. Over the past few months she has taught me, our most recent Training 4 Influence cohort, and her fellow Taye Training facilitators, how to use the tech we needed to enable us to deliver online training that still meets the Training 4 Influence standards.
Which has led us to receive 100% excellent feedback and reviews such as:
“I was amazed at how interactive it was and how we could all still get involved and enjoy the session”
In today’s episode Beckie and I discuss my reservations, the process we went through to adapt Taye face to face courses to be delivered live-online. And her top tips for ensuring that live-online training goes smoothly.
I hope you enjoy!

The differentiation and thought put into the session was OUTSTANDING’ - Sue; Senior Mental Health Worker.

This episode will briefly cover five key points from this course:
- Leadership v ManagementLeadership StylesBuilding TrustDifficult ConversationsDeveloping Staff
The Course
People are your biggest asset. At Taye, the one thing that is the golden thread through all our courses is the importance of understanding and valuing individuals. This absolutely starts with your staff team and your managers.
Evidence has shown that staff that feel valued and understood are more effective, productive and resilient. By giving your leaders/managers the opportunity to attend this course, you are immediately highlighting how much you value and support them. We will then do the rest, by inspiring and challenging them, whilst teaching them the techniques to transform their team.
Our leadership and management training is a two day course, to allow for intense discussion and exploration. We focus on areas that thousands of operational staff have told us make the difference to them and, likewise, managers have told us they often struggle with.
The course is tailored not only to the organisation, your policies and customer group but to each individual attendee and what they need to achieve to be the best leader/manager they can be. We bring the theory and techniques alive by looking at specific examples from the group and by bringing our own, which have been raised by staff in a similar area of work.
Previous feedback has identified this course as a complete game changer and absolutely worth every penny.
Our Management and leadership course is aimed at individuals who wish to learn the important skills to transition to a manager for the first time or as a refresher of basic skills for existing managers. This 2 day course is about the importance of effective people skills, recognising people as your biggest asset.

- LegislationMulti-agency workingWriting ReportsLearning from Serious Case ReviewsLooking After Yourself
This course is for operational staff. It is recommended that the awareness course is attended first as the focus of this training is building confidence and understanding of how to report and record abuse appropriately.
Safeguarding Alerter builds on the information from the awareness course. It adds more detail to the underpinning principles, legislation, guidance and reasons for abuse.
The course has been developed with a variety of operational staff based on what information they needed to fulfil their legislative responsibilities and provide the best possible service to their customer group.

To provide context for those listening in the future, as this episode is published we are currently around three weeks into the COVID-19 UK lockdown. Schools are closed, many employees are working from home and hospitals are at capacity.
While this podcast has been in the plans for a while, COVID-19 has changed the timetable of its delivery. Instead of starting by delving into the Training 4 Influence methodology, we realise it is more important to start this podcast with a series delivering bitesize learning, derived from our induction courses, for those frontline professionals needing further support during these times.
Frontline professionals regarded as 'critical workers' are currently working under unprecedented circumstances - with staff levels falling and government regulations changing daily, additional support is vital as many new, inexperienced or recently retired people are being asked to take on key roles.
