2004 - Northport, Maine. Something about 28-year-old Jeremy Alex was different. He wasn’t his usual free-spirited self—lately, he’d been acting more and more paranoid that bad guys were coming after him.  Then, on the cool evening of April 24, 2004, Jeremy suddenly ran into his former teacher’s backyard in a panic, wad of cash in hand. Despite trying to calm him, Jeremy ran off into the thick Maine forest, never to be seen again. The truth of what happened that night is just as bizarre and murky as it was in 2004. But the Alex family is hopeful that through a tangled web of speculation and rumors, the truth will eventually emerge. After all, how much longer can somebody keep a secret? 1987 - Roxbury, Massachusetts. It was Labor Day weekend in 1987. 19-year-old Dora Brimage was celebrating her friend’s birthday when she got into a car to head to a club called Joe’s Jaguar. She never came home. Her body was found the following morning at a construction site when the workers showed up for their shift. For years, Dora’s case sat unnoticed in a pile of Boston’s unsolved crimes. 1983 - Kittery, Maine.  Sometime after leaving work on February 3, 1983, 31-year-old Reeves K. Johnson vanished without a trace. Over the next three weeks, his bank account was drained to make strange purchases that weren’t discovered until the account was overdrawn. The case went cold almost immediately. In 2021, Murder, She Told produced a special episode on Reeves’ case, but a lot has changed since then. This is not that episode. In collaboration with the Kittery Police Dept, we have uncovered new information that wasn’t known before. 1968 - Huntington Beach, California. On the afternoon of March 14, 1968, a group of boys playing on a vacant lot in Huntington Beach, CA stumbled on a grim discovery: the body of a young woman. It was clear the woman had been murdered, but investigators were unable to determine who she was. Despite exhaustive efforts, the identity of the Huntington Beach Jane Doe would remain a mystery for over 50 years. 1968 - Huntington Beach, California. Anita Piteau dreamed of getting out of Augusta, Maine. As a teenager, she’d been committed to the Maine Industrial School for Girls: a reform school that aimed to turn rebellious, troubled, and misfit girls into promising young women.  When she left the school, Anita was far from reformed. If anything, she was more determined than ever to live her life on her own terms. In December of 1967, Anita packed up and went to California in search of adventure.  But a few months later, her family suddenly stopped hearing from her, and nobody could get in touch. 1971 - Farmington, Maine. When 15-year-old Judith Hand went missing after failing to report to her after-school babysitting job on September 10, 1971, the Farmington Police told her family she’d be back.  Her family wasn’t convinced. They knew something was wrong. Judy was extremely responsible, and wouldn’t just skip out on her job let alone not come home.  Thirteen days later, Judy's body was found buried in a decaying sawdust pile at an abandoned mill. Though her cause of death was undetermined, there was no question the baby-faced teen had been murdered. While the agonizing search for Judy had ended, the hunt for her killer had only just begun. 2010 - Gilford, New Hampshire. Sometime in the evening hours of October 31, 2010, somebody shot and killed 54-year-old Roberta Miller (who went by Bobbie) and her dog, Sport, in her home in Gilford, NH. According to her brother, it seemed like a personal attack or something professionally done. Bobbie had recently moved into the home after finalizing her divorce—a bitter battle that spanned over 3 years. She was attending college to earn a business degree, going on dates, and was looking forward to an independent future.  Bobbie’s family is frustrated with the lack of updates and progress, and they’re not afraid to speak out. On the surface, the answer seems clear. But as deeper layers of this case are pulled back, a cascade of questions and mystery are revealed, leaving room for doubt. 1988 - Lawrence, Massachusetts. 2022 - Concord, New Hampshire. On December 15th, 2023, I had the opportunity to attend the sentencing hearing of 27-year-old Logan Clegg, who had recently been convicted of the murders of Stephen and Djeswende "Wendy" Reid in Concord, NH from April of 2022. 1996 - Stamford, Connecticut. Becoming a teenage mother didn’t stop 18-year-old Rhonda Johnson from pursuing her dreams. In fact, it only gave her more motivation. While working part time at the hospital, Rhonda was also busy taking classes at the community college. Her drive was fueled by the commitment to a promising future—not just for herself—but also for her 8-month-old son, Cor'an. That dream was stolen on the evening of September 12th, 1996 when both mother and baby were found dead in Rhonda’s mother’s car. They’d both been shot.  This incredibly senseless act of violence stirred up heartbreak and fury in the Stamford community. What kind of person shoots a young woman and her baby in cold blood? 1978 - Bellingham, Massachusetts  Theresa Corley was only 19 when she was found dead on the side of the highway in Bellingham, MA in December of 1978. Theresa left the Train Stop bar on foot, and ended up trying to hitchhike home... She was instead brought to an apartment building nearby where it’s believed she was assaulted before fleeing the scene in mis-matched shoes. Two days later, her body was discovered.  After decades without answers, her sister, Gerri, reached a breaking point. Her friend’s said they last saw her leaving the bar sometime before midnight on foot following a fight with her boyfriend. Theresa didn’t have a car, and the trek home was miles away.  Three days later, on December 8th, her nude body was discovered halfway down a steep ditch on the side of the highway. She had been strangled. As investigators dug into the mystery of Theresa’s final hours alive, unsettling narratives surrounding a party at a nearby apartment came to light, placing Theresa there after she left the bar. What secrets were being hidden in that apartment? Were they connected to Theresa’s murder? 1992 - Clarksville, Tennessee. On the evening of December 24, 1992, 25-year-old Susan Lund left her home for ingredients to make a pie. The young mother never returned home. About a month later, female remains were located 300 miles away in Ina, Illinois, but investigators couldn't figure out who she was. 30 years later, the woman known only as Ina Jane Doe was finally identified as Susan Minard Lund. Susan's murder remains unsolved. Laura Norton, host of The Fall Line and One Strange Thing podcast, spent more than a year working with and learning from forensic experts across the country as she collaborated with anthropologists, DNA experts, and investigative genetic genealogists to help identify Susan Lund. 2022 - Concord, New Hampshire. On the afternoon of April 18th, 2022, Stephen and Djeswende "Wendy" Reid were shot to death while walking on the Broken Ground Trails near their apartment in Concord, NH.  Steve and Wendy represented the best of humanity. They had recently retired and moved back to Steve’s hometown of Concord to settle down and enjoy a slower pace of life after spending decades doing humanitarian work all over the world. Who would do this to such a beloved couple? In October 2022, police arrested and eventually charged 25-year-old Logan Clegg with their murders. 2023 - Lewiston, Maine. On Wednesday, October, 25th, 2023, an armed gunman entered two locations in Lewiston, Maine—Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schmengee’s Bar and Grill pool hall—and opened fire.  The shooter, who was identified as Robert Card, was on the run for 48-hours before taking his own life on Friday, October 27th. He killed 18 innocent people, and injured about 13 more. As a born and raised Mainer who creates this show from my home state, my heart is absolutely broken for the community, the families and friends directly impacted, and for this massive tragedy.  I felt compelled to create this short episode to honor the victims. My hope is that you walk away from this knowing something more about each of them as the amazing people they were, and not just as names on a list. 1958 - Falmouth, Maine. You won’t find the name Dennis Down featured on the Maine Unsolved Homicide List. You also won’t find anything on his murder on the internet.  Buried deep in the memories and archives of 1958, sits a brutal unsolved murder of a man who still hasn’t received justice.  At 63, Dennis and his wife Edith, both of England, had just purchased a new grocery store in Portland, ME’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood. They had recently become grandparents, and they were looking forward to the golden years of life. But on a cool morning in late June of 1958, somebody took it all away. Dennis was found beaten and stabbed in his home—a horrific crime that left police and everyone who knew him baffled. 1990 - Johnston, Rhode Island. In July of 1999, 50-year-old Stephen Marfeo took action on a violent plan: he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, Laura Vincent, and attempted to kill her boyfriend, Sal Puleo, before ultimately taking his own life.  For police, this was an open and shut case fulled by jealousy and domestic violence. However, they held out hope that this tragedy would help them unravel the mystery of what happened to Stephen’s wife, 34-year-old Doreen Ann Marfeo, who vanished without a trace from their Johnston, RI home in March of 1990. Stephen told police that Doreen’s behavior in the months leading up to her disappearance had taken a bizarre uncharacteristic turn. She abruptly quit her job, and was having late night panic attacks over something she couldn’t bring herself to tell her husband. 2015 - Fennville, Michigan. “On Sunday, January 11th, I strangled her… she’s dead, and she’s laying on the living room floor…”  When Allegan County police showed up to the residence mentioned in the haunting 911 call, they discovered the lifeless body of 48-year-old Sara Lee Knight in the exact condition described by the anonymous caller—virtually frozen due to the absence of heating in the house. Documents, funeral instructions, photos and personal items of Sara’s had been organized and laid out on the table for police to find. The only thing they couldn’t find was Sara’s husband, Butch. It didn’t take long for police to realize the person who made the call to 911 was 66-year-old Harold “Butch” Knight. Butch had taken Sara’s vehicle and skipped town, eventually making his way up to a tiny town in rural Maine. By the time they found Sara’s abandoned vehicle, it was too late. They’d lost his trail.  Almost a decade later, police are still searching for Butch. This is the story of Sara Lee Knight, and Harold Wesley Knight, who is a fugitive of justice. 1981 - Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In September of 1981, the city of Portsmouth was rocked with the vicious murder of 23-year-old model and beauty school student, Laura Kempton. Laura had been home alone in her apartment when the killer broke in and took her life. One year later, in October of 1982, Portsmouth police found themselves in a nightmare déjà vu: another young model, 20-year-old Tammy Little, was found murdered and assaulted at her apartment. Just like Laura, Tammy was taking classes at Portsmouth’s beauty school.  Both cases were eerily similar, but investigators were hesitant to link them too soon. Decades passed without resolution in both cases, which had been inextricably linked in death… until a hot July day in 2023, when the NH Attorney General and Portsmouth PD held a press conference with a major update. 2011 - Long Island, New York. Since December 2010, the Long Island Serial Killer has been one of the most notorious unsolved serial cases of the 21st century…  Multiple sets of remains had been found on and near the north side of Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in Long Island—Four of them young women who were bound with a burlap type material and who were most likely connected: Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Megan Waterman…  On July 13th, 2023, investigator’s search for the LISK suspect came to a head when they arrested and charged 59-year-old Manhattan architect, Rex Heuermann, on three counts of murder. One of those charges was for the death of Megan Waterman. This was the moment Megan’s friends and family—as well as the families of the other victims—had been waiting over a decade for. 2010 - Long Island, New York. In June 2010, 22-year-old Megan Waterman from Scarborough, Maine, disappeared after leaving a Holiday Inn hotel in Hauppauge, Long Island, around 1:30 am. Six months later, authorities discovered remains on the north side of Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, concealed by brush and poison ivy. Within two days, three more sets of remains were found, all belonging to young women, wrapped in a burlap-like material. The victims were identified as Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Megan Waterman. New York was gripped with fear as additional bodies were discovered, leading the media to name the perpetrator the Long Island Serial Killer (LISK). However, amid the frenzy, four families were desperately seeking compassion and support. Little did they know, they would be embarking on a decade-long quest for justice. 2014 - Fortuna, California. In February of 2014, two women—Danielle Bertolini and Sheila Franks— went missing within one week of each other in Humboldt County, California. They were both last seen in the presence of the same man, and were later known as part of the Humboldt County Missing Five.  Danielle and Sheila’s remains were later recovered near the Eel River in a similar location. Their killer hasn’t been brought to justice.  Danielle was a childhood friend of mine who grew up in Maine. Two years ago, I set out to bring light to her story and help her mother, Billie Jo, fight for justice. 2024 will mark 10 years unsolved. 1978 - Kennebunk, Maine. On a muggy Sunday afternoon in July of 1978, 18-year-old Mary Tanner was discovered in a field in Lyman, Maine. She had been beaten to death. 1978 - Kennebunk, Maine. On a hot summer day in July of 1978, a group of young sky divers made a chilling discovery as they flew over the skies of Gracie Evans Field in Lyman—the lifeless body of a young woman.  Her death was quickly ruled a homicide, and news spread like wildfire through the neighboring coastal Maine towns. The woman was identified as Mary Ellen Tanner, who had just celebrated her 18th birthday just weeks prior.  Mary was last seen on the evening of Friday, July 7th, 1978 on the Mousam River Bridge in the center of town, hitchhiking her way home, which was just a short distance away.  But Mary was holding onto a secret… and investigators couldn’t help but wonder if this gave her killer a motive to pick her up that night.  What happened to Mary Ellen Tanner? 1984 - Concord, New Hampshire. Shirley Ann McBride, known as Tippy, mysteriously vanished without a trace during the summer of 1984. She was 15, and had recently relocated from rural Pittsfield, NH to her sister Donna's residence in nearby Concord. On the evening of Friday, July 13th, 1984, Tippy left to collect payment for her babysitting job but never arrived at her destination. Initially, the police considered her a runaway, assuming she would resurface soon, given her history. However, this time was different. Tippy left behind all her personal belongings, had no money, and hadn't informed anyone of her plans. Months went by with no sign of Tippy. Despite numerous tips, the offering of rewards, and her family's relentless pursuit of answers, Tippy's whereabouts remained unknown. Then, a tip reached the police station regarding a young man attempting to burn damp clothes that shockingly resembled the outfit Tippy was last seen wearing. 1979 - Gary, Indiana. It was October of 1979, and 8-year-old Kenneth “Kenny” Conrick had been dreaming for weeks about what Halloween costume he would pick for his favorite holiday. But somewhere on his walk home from school, Kenny vanished without a trace. Kenny was supposed to meet his babysitter, but he never he showed up.  The last known sighting of him was alongside his friend, walking down their familiar road. How could such a seemingly innocent walk turn into a nightmare? The community sprung into action, working together in a collective effort to bring Kenny home safely.  A few weeks later, the search for Kenny came to a tragic end; the little boy’s body was found behind the Salvation Army where he and his friends would play. He had been mutilated and strangled. Despite strong leads and multiple suspects, the investigation into Kenny's murder quickly stalled, leaving the case unsolved for decades. The search for answers raised various possibilities: was it a satanic cult? Someone known to Kenny? Or a predator waiting to strike? Then, in 2007, police interviewed a man named David Bowen, who was 16 at the time. Could Kenny’s killer have been right there in front of them all along? 1975 - East Haven, Connecticut. On a warm August morning in 1975, a young woman's body was discovered in the drainage ditch behind Bradlee's Department Store in East Haven, Connecticut. She had died of asphyxia and was tightly wrapped in a tarp. Nobody knew who she was. For decades, investigators were haunted by the unknown identity of the woman. As the years passed, hope persisted that the next generation would have the technology to restore her identity and bring her family justice. In April of 2023, Police finally had their break: Through genetic genealogy, the East Haven Jane Doe was officially identified as Patricia Meleady Newsom, an 18-year-old girl who had reportedly run away from a boarding school in New York sometime between 1973 and 1974. 2004 - Waldoboro, Maine. In June of 2004, 39-year-old Mark Dugas was stabbed with a kitchen knife in his home by his wife, Amy Dugas in front of her son. Though she claimed the incident happened in self-defense, she was arrested and charged with his murder. Mark’s family and friends were determined to bring the truth to light: that Mark's death was the result of escalating domestic violence. As the midcoast Maine community rallied together to bring awareness to a side of domestic violence not often seen, a contentious trial unfolded in the courthouse. 2004 - Waldoboro, Maine. 39-year-old Mark Dugas, a loving father, was stabbed with a kitchen knife in June of 2004, during a heated altercation with his wife, Amy Dugas. He ran to a neighbor for help, but tragically died before first responders arrived. As news of Amy’s murder charges spread, Mark’s family and friends were determined to bring the truth to light: that Mark's death was the result of escalating domestic violence. The community grappled with the fact that a petite woman like Amy could be the aggressor, triggering a conversation state wide about how we look at relationship violence from all angles. Prosecutors sought to prove this murder was intentional after Mark told Amy that he was leaving her. Amy’s defense team said she acted in self-defense.  But the state had its star witness. 1993 - Bangor/Houlton, Maine. Virginia Sue Pictou Noyes had vanished without a trace from Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor in the early morning hours of April 25th, 1993. All eyes were on her husband, Larry Noyes, and his brother, Roger, who were both arrested after a violent altercation with Virginia at a bar shortly before her disappearance. Hospital staff said Virgina left without checking out, possibly on her own accord. This is the last place she was reliably seen. She was never heard from again. Virginia was a mother. A beloved sister and daughter. After 30 years of waiting, her family just wants to bring her home.  Through their own personal healing, Virginia's family is determined to shed light on the issue of violence and abuse experienced by Native women and people at a disproportionately higher rate. By sharing their stories, they hope to help other families and make a positive impact for the future of Indigenous people. This is an MMIW case from Maine. 1993 - Bangor/Houlton, Maine. On the evening of April 24th, 1993, Virginia Sue Pictou Noyes was at a bar in Bangor, Maine with her husband, Larry Noyes, and his brother, Roger, when a brutal fight broke out. Both men beat Virginia, resulting in a double arrest for assault, and Virginia in the hospital. Sometime in the early morning hours, Virginia vanished. Police said she left the hospital on her own accord without checking out, and that they're reasonably sure she was seen at a truck stop in Houlton making a phone call—2.5 hours away in the direction of her home in Easton—trying to get back to her kids. The Pictou family isn’t so sure. Her brother, Robert Pictou, believes his sister was dead before she left Bangor... so what happened to Virginia? And 30 years later, why hasn’t she been found? 1995 - Bangor, Maine. When Sarah Johnson went upstairs to check on her infant daughter, Aisha Mariah Dickson, she wasn’t expecting to find her not breathing in her crib. The little baby girl was rushed to the hospital where doctors tried everything they could. Aisha was later pronounced dead at just 8-months-old. But the medical examiner made a disturbing discovery during the autopsy: Aisha had died of blunt force trauma. Not only that, but her short life was filled with abuse that was evident in her healing wounds and bones.  The only people in the apt on the night of January 6th, 1995 were her mother, Sarah, her grandmother, June, and her father, DeShawn.  So which one of them murdered Aisha? 1986 - Kingston, Massachussetts. On a brisk night in October of 1986, 15-year-old Tracy Gilpin left a friend’s house party in Rocky Nook to buy a pack of cigarettes at the Cumberland Farms gas station. When she left the parking lot around 11:30pm, it was the last time she would be seen alive. Three weeks later, Tracy’s body was found 11 miles away in Myles Standish State Forest. She’d been crushed by a 73 lb boulder. For years, the Gilpin’s fought to keep Tracy in the public eye. Her sister, Kerry Gilpin, inspired to help make a difference for other families, even became a state trooper (and eventually the superintendent) for the Massachusetts State Police.  As years went on and other cases were solved, they always wondered when their day for justice would come… and 32 years later, in 2018, it did; when police arrested 61-year-old Michael Arthur Hand in North Carolina. This is the murder of Tracy “Ashtray” Gilpin and what we know in the case against Michael Hand, which will most likely be heading to trial sometime this year. 1971 - Burlington, Vermont. In July of 1971, a 23-year-old elementary school teacher named Rita Curran was brutally attacked and murdered as she slept in her own bed in Burlington, VT. Her roommates just happened to be away, and in the span of 70 minutes, an unknown man entered the apartment and took her life. Rita’s murder shook the small city. It was brazen; and police had zero leads. For 51 years, Rita’s case remained unsolved. It was Burlington’s oldest cold case, and one of the most infamous true crime cases in New England. Ted Bundy was even considered to be a suspect at one point. Rita’s family came to the conclusion that her case may never be solved. Until February 21st, 2023, when Burlington police detectives and other officials announced that through genetic genealogy, they had solved the case: her killer was a man named William DeRoos, who was 31 at the time and lived just 2 floors above her. Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. 1947 - Pawtucket, Rhode Island. 17-year-old Rita Bouchard was paranoid of being hurt or killed by unknown men. In 1947, an unknown assailant was violently attacking women on the streets of Pawtucket, RI, and Rita, who worked the late shift at the factory, was afraid she could be next.  Sadly, on February 1st, 1947, Rita’s fear came true.  A man walking a trail in the woods discovered her body under a tree. She had been brutally stabbed to death over 30 times with a stiletto knife. Police had no idea who did this to her. A month after her murder, police question a boy named Raymond Patenaude, the brother of Rita’s best friend. Again. He was already a potential suspect in their mind, but they didn’t have the evidence against him. 1989 - Worcecster, Massachusetts. 17-year-old Nereida “Nettie” Melendez had a big day ahead of her, and plans for her bright future. June 5th, 1989, was just the beginning: her high school graduation. But when her name was called onstage to get her diploma, Nettie was nowhere to be found. Her family started to panic. Nettie was responsible, and it was highly unlike her to miss such an important event. Their panic ended in tragedy when her body was recovered after a family search the next day. To this day, her case still remains unsolved. 1995 - Hampden, Maine. Alex James was somebody who always kept to herself. She was 58, and lived on her own in an apartment in Brewer, Maine. She was doing well for herself after being diagnosed with mental health issues, and just wanted to live in peace. Alex James, who previously went by the name Joy Crafts Earley, never hurt a fly. On a summer evening in June 1995, Alex never came home from an evening stroll. The next day, her body was found near a storage unit, savagely murdered and assaulted. 1986 - Cranston, Rhode Island. December 5th, 1986 was a normal day for 18-year-old Bobby Fisher. It wasn’t until his neighbor pulled up at his work with an alarming message that his world was turned upside down: there was something wrong with his mother, Donna. Donna Anthony Fisher had been found unconscious from what appeared to be a medical event in her bedroom in Cranston, Rhode Island. A few days later on her 39th birthday, Donna passed away. But things took a turn when an autopsy revealed that Donna’s cause of death wasn’t an aneurysm like everyone thought, it was strangulation. Donna had been murdered. No charges has ever been made in Donna’s case, but that doesn’t mean it’s collecting dust. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Hear Donna’s story told through her son, Bobby, and walk through the case from the eyes of an investigator with the current detective, Robert Santagata. 1996 - Windsor, Connecticut. On March 21st, 1996, 32-year-old Anita Patel stopped by her mother, Champaben Patel’s home, to drop off her toddler while she took her 4-year-old daughter to school. She had no idea that just behind the doors of the home, was a man attacking her mother. Anita yelled her daughter to take her brother and run. When police arrived to the Patel home, they walked into one of the worst crime scenes they’d ever encountered. Both Champa and Anita had been killed; tortured and set on fire. This was a brutal and awful crime. The Patel family sought comfort in one another in the immediate aftermath, mourning the loss of these two important women. But as time went on, the cracks in the family dynamic began to show, and they started questioning if somebody close knew more than they were letting on, asking themselves one important question: What if the killer was right there with them in the room? 2022 - Concord, New Hampshire. Stephen & Djeswende "Wendy" Reid were ready to slow down and enjoy their golden years together. After impressive, lifelong careers as humanitarians serving those in need all over the world, they finally retired to Steve’s hometown of Concord, New Hampshire. On the afternoon of April 18th, 2022, the day after Easter, Steve and Wendy went for a walk on a trail system called Broken Ground Trails near their apartment complex. They never made it home. On the trail, they were shot to death in cold blood by a stranger; shaking up everyone in New England. Who would shoot such wonderful people? For 6 months it seemed like the police didn’t have many leads. A composite sketch had been released, but Steve and Wendy barely made the news anymore, despite the brazen nature of the crime…. 1940 - Rockland, Maine. It was Halloween night, and 16-year-old Alzada Pauline Young wanted to go out. Her younger siblings were trick-or-treating, and on their way to a party. Why was she being punished?  In the height of an argument, she drew a knife in a threat against her step-father, John Phelps, who was the only thing standing in her way. In what he claimed was self defense, he hurled the closet weapon at her—a hammer—killing her instantly.  What happened next, was one of the most heinous and horrifying attempts at a cover up in Maine history.  John cut up her body under the cover of darkness, disposed of each part in burlap bags, and made sure all trace of Pauline was removed… The teenager did have a habit of staying away from home. He’ll just tell her mother she ran off to get married…  But little did he know, somebody had been listening. Neighbors were growing suspicious, and his secret would only stay buried for so long. Was this a terrible and tragic accident? Or a man who killed his wife’s daughter in a homicidal rage because he wanted her gone? 2001 - League City, Texas. When Tot Harriman arrived in the US after the fall of Saigon, Vietnam in 1975, nobody knew the lasting impact she would go on to have in greater Portland area in ME. With a big smile, hard work, and great food to share, she helped cultivate the Vietnamese community in Maine that stands strong today. When Tot was 57, she decided to move to Texas to be closer to her children. But in July of 2001 when she was going to look at homes, both Tot and her car vanished without a trace on Highway 35 between Houston and her destination of Corpus Christi. Her son, Chien Si fought tooth and nail to keep his mom’s case in spotlight— to make people care… but without clues pointing to an answer, the attention on Tot’s case tapered off, and the trail eventually went cold. 1988 - West Swanzey, New Hampshire. On a hot summer night in 1988, 22-year-old Jane Boroski, who was 7-months pregnant, stopped at a convenience store on her way home from a fair, when she was attacked by an unknown assailant who stabbed her 27 times and left her for dead. Miraculously, Jane survived... and so did her baby. In the 1980’s, a serial killer was preying on women in the area surrounding the Connecticut River Valley in New Hampshire and Vermont. To this day, the identity of the killer is still unconfirmed, and remains one of New England’s most prolific unsolved cases. There are 7 known victims connected to the Connecticut River Valley Killer, and one survivor—who believes that without a doubt, she almost became his 8th.  But there is so much more to Jane Boroski than the night she was attacked, and 34-years later, she's ready to open up about it. 2006 - Cranston, Rhode Island. The case was doomed from the start. In July of 2006, when paramedics arrived at the apartment of 34-year-old Shawn O'Brien, they believed it was for a medical emergency. It wasn't until after he passed away—and the police consulted with the medical examiner—that they realized the magnitude of his injuries were not consistent with what allegedly happened: a fall from a seizure. His cause of death was blunt force trauma. By the time police got a search warrant, it had been 4 days and the crime scene was contaminated. What's worse, the medical examiner didn't have a clear story from police about how his injuries occurred, and ruled the manner of death as undetermined, beginning an uphill battle with the police (to investigate as a homicide) that continues to this day. 16 years later, the family is still asking themselves the same questions they did in 2006, and pushing even harder for the answers. His only daughter, Natalia St. Louis, remains determined to find out the truth about what happened to her father... and won't stop until she does. 2006 - Cranston, Rhode Island. Shawn O’Brien was the life of the party. Despite the trouble that he'd occasionally get into, he had the luck of the Irish, and would often emerge unscathed... until one hot summer night in 2006, when everything changed... Paramedics arrived to his basement apartment on a call for a seizure, something Shawn occasionally suffered from. According to accounts, he had been seizing for over an hour, making this a life threatening situation that ultimately took his life. But things just didn't add up, and questions swirled around the circumstances of Shawn's death. 1992 - Limington, Maine. Susan Hannah was a free spirit. Her family recalls her “ditty-bopping” in and out of the three different homes on Snow Road in Scarborough that they occupied. She was always out and about at the beach and in nature. She loved to feed the birds in her backyard, and they would even land on her outstretched arm, unafraid. Susan disappeared on the evening of Saturday, April 18th, 1992 and her family knew right away that something was wrong. Police turned their eyes toward her husband, Jon Hannah, against whom she had recently secured a restraining order. 18 months later, her body was discovered in a rural part of Maine, an hour west of where she lived. 2019 - Manchester, NH On December 31st, 2021, as the world was getting ready to ring in the new year, Manchester, NH Police Chief Allen Aldenberg went to the media with an alarming press release: a 7-year-old girl named Harmony Montgomery was missing, and she hadn't been seen in 2 years. At the time, she was living with her father, Adam Montgomery, who had custody. But Adam claimed that he dropped Harmony off at her mother's in November 2019, and Crystal Sorey (her mom) claims that she hadn't actually seen Harmony since a FaceTime call in April of 2019. 1849 - Saco, Maine. In April of 1850, as the sun shone on Woodbury Brook in Saco, Maine, a boy made a grisly discovery: the body of a young woman tied to a board. It was soon determined that the woman, known as Mary Bean, was killed during a botched abortion from the local botanic doctor, James Smith. During the course of the trial, it was revealed that Mary Bean was actually Berengera Caswell, a 21-year-old Canadian factory worker who was trying to make a life for herself in New England. The murder of Mary Bean was written into a fictional, salacious true crime novella, warning young women against the dangers of promiscuity and the inevitable demise of working mill girls. 2018 - Rome, Maine. In August of 2018 in Rome, Maine, Shane Cheetham confronted his wife about poisoning his dog, and in the heat of an argument (according to her), put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. Later that evening, Shane passed away at a hospital in Portland, Maine. According to the people at the scene, this is an open and shut case of suicide. According to police reports, this case should be closed. But when you look at the details, and when you dig into the events of the evening, not everything adds up... and the family has questions. 1977 - Biddeford, Maine. By the time Nancy Fredette was able to get to the bedroom where shots rang out on the morning of May 26th, 1977, it was too late. The armed intruder had left through the back door, and her husband, Fred Fredette, lay dying on the bed in their Biddeford, Maine home. He passed away at the hospital later that night, and an investigation for his murder ensued. Weeks later, Nancy got a surprise when she herself was arrested for the murder of her husband. The state of Maine vs. Nancy Fredette is one of the most unique cases in Maine criminal history. 1958 - Lewiston, Maine. In July of 1958, ten police officers in Lewiston, Maine found themselves in a 30-minute standoff with an armed shooter in the woods just off a road in nearby Sabattus. Trying to de-escalate the situation, Police Officer Paul J. Simard stepped forward, talking with the shooter to drop their weapon. But the shooter didn't back down. And a shot rang out, hitting Officer Simard and killing him. When the standoff finally came to a head, the shooter agreed to surrender... and out from the behind a bush stepped the deadly shooter... a 14-year-old girl named Sandra Knowlton. 1970 - Smyrna Mills, Maine. In the early morning hours of July 10th, 1970, a freight train struck and killed three Canadian boys on the Bangor and Aroostook Railway Line in the wilderness of Smyrna Mils, Maine. Within hours, the Sheriff determined the incident was a tragic accident—that they were sleeping on the train tracks, for reasons that can't be explained—and completely dismissed the possibility of foul play.
