- 106 - Adolescence: The Brain's Quest for Identity and Independence (The Social Brain ep 39)
The adolescent brain is often characterized as an imbalanced, hormone-charged, and broken version of an adult brain. The reality, however, is much more nuanced and interesting. Adolescence is a critically important period of brain development that allows for rapid learning, social affiliation, and exploration. It's found in many species across the animal kingdom and it serves an extremely important purpose.
Join us in this episode of The Social Brain, as we discuss brain development through the lens of adolescence.

In this livestream, I discuss the science of habits. Habits are automatic behaviors formed through repetition, shifting from conscious actions mediated by the frontal cortex to automatic processes controlled by the basal ganglia, with minimal cognitive effort. Initially requiring deliberate thought, actions become habitual through a cue-behavior-reward loop, significantly influenced by dopamine's role in reinforcing behaviors via reward prediction. While habits can be beneficial or detrimental, understanding the neuroscience behind habit formation and the brain's neuroplasticity offers insights into changing behaviors, emphasizing the potential for modifying even ingrained habits through targeted efforts.

The dramatic increase in depression diagnoses has led millions to use antidepressants, based on the theory that a chemical imbalance--namely low serotonin levels--in the brain is to blame. However, recent studies suggest the cause of depression is more complex, challenging the simplicity of this theory. While antidepressants are crucial for many, viewing depression solely as a chemical issue oversimplifies the diverse factors at play, including environmental and personal experiences. This calls for a broader, more nuanced understanding of depression that appreciates the complexity of mental health beyond just biology.

Cognitive control and flexibility is the key to changing when you feel stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior. This video explains how this brain function works using a common health challenge you may have faced in the past.
In my experience, one of the most powerful ways of keeping up with your personal growth is to keep learning about your brain, how it works, and how to influence it to help you achieve the goals that matter most to you. You can get a deeper understanding of your brain just by watching videos like this, but it often helps to have written articles that you can easily search, highlight, and reference.
That’s why I provide written versions of all new Sense of Mind videos, complete with a list of peer reviewed sources that I used to write them, only for Patreon supporters of this channel. Plus, I do a monthly livestream only for Patreon supporters of Sense of Mind. So, if you want to continue learning about your brain in order to accelerate your personal development and just help you feel better, I urge you to go to https://www.patreon.com/senseofmind and sign up.

At first glance, it seems silly to fear things that haven’t happened or may never happen. What is the point of getting worked up over something you may have no control over? Odd as it seems, the truth is, most of us do this on a regular basis. It’s a normal process that occurs in the brain and one you are probably deeply familiar with: anxiety.
In this episode, we’ll see that while not all anxiety is bad, it very often causes us to suffer unnecessarily. We’ll see how this occurs in the brain and how we can take control of this response and live more peaceful lives.

Anxiety is the fear of things yet to come. It's what happens when the brain predicts a bad outcome and then prepares for it. It's a mechanism by which the brain prepares the body to face potential threats. So anxiety is actually often a good thing. Wait, really? Yes, it's just that, thanks to the complexities of the human brain, it's very easy for good, adaptive anxiety to transform into unhealthy maladaptive anxiety or even an anxiety disorder. In this video, you will:
- Discover how the brain's wiring can turn the tide from adaptive anxiety that sharpens our survival instincts, to maladaptive anxiety that spirals us into a maze of avoidance and dread.
- Dive into the heart of anxiety's neural circuitry, from the vigilant amygdala to the discerning prefrontal cortex, and unveil the groundbreaking strategies poised to reset the anxious brain.
- Explore the cutting-edge fusion of pharmacology, neuromodulation, and virtual realms that are reshaping the battlefield against anxiety disorders, opening doors to a life reclaimed from the clutches of unwarranted fears.

So, if you can understand the neuroscience of decision making, then you should be able to make better decisions that improve your life in the future. One key component of decision making, as emphasized by the field known as “neuroeconomics,” is the process of valuation, or how your brain determines how much you value something. This video will explain the science of value, helping to decode the complex neuroscience of decision making and neuroeconomics. At the end, I’ll describe 3 neuroscience based strategies for avoiding cognitive biases and making better decisions in the future. #neuroscience #brain #neuroeconomics

In this video, I explore the neuroscience of positive emotions, the roles of the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, and science-based tools to enhance positivity, focus, and mindfulness.
Discover how the left forebrain is associated with positive feelings and how the left prefrontal cortex (PFC), especially the left dorsolateral PFC (dlPFC), springs into action during periods of happiness. Learn about the ways the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) influences your self-concept, life story, and social connections. Understand how brain structures like the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) play a role in positive emotions, attention, and effort evaluation.
The video also provides two evidence-based tools to enhance and increase positive emotions in your daily life. The first tool concerns dealing with failure, and it helps you develop a growth mindset to better handle setbacks and improve future performance. The second tool explains why focusing our attention is so important for overall happiness.

Probably the most important question we can ask is “how can I be happier?” Some people might find this question overly self-centered, but becoming happier is not only good for us, but everyone we come into contact with as well. Others, while agreeing that individual happiness is important, may nevertheless think it is impossible to be any happier than one’s genes or childhood determine. That is a myth. In fact, over the last fifty years, an entire field of psychological science (and more recently, neuroscience) has been created in order to understand and maximize individual human flourishing—positive psychology.

In this episode, we will focus on some of the science behind positive psychology, but we will spend a lot of the time talking about how you can use this knowledge to create more happiness for yourself. We will also talk about some of the emerging neuroscientific literature, but we will go much deeper into this topic on a future episode.

--Support The Social Brain on Patreon! www.Patreon.com/thesocialbrain--
Throughout life, you are continually changing, shifting, adapting, learning, and becoming who you are. Another way of saying that is that your mind is continually changing, because you are your mind.
Of course, your brain is the physical substrate of your mind–the brain is what makes you you. So every change you have ever experienced is a result of your brain changing.
Your memories, your sense of who you are, your ability to do even the simplest tasks–all of it is stored as patterns of connections among cells in your brain. And whenever you remember some experience or fact, that is only possible because a certain pattern of neural activity occurs. If the connections weren’t stored as they are, your memories would disappear.
Your personality and sense of self also depend on the details of how the cells of your brain communicate with each other and the fact that you are approximately the same person (psychologically speaking) throughout life is a result of connections among neurons and the resulting patterns of neural activity. Your ability to sense and perceive the world and various objects within it is also the result of these connections and their activity.
The upshot of all of this is that you are malleable. More accurately, your mind is malleable because your brain is malleable. It is not infinitely malleable and none of us are blank slates at birth or any other time, but all of us can become better, happier, smarter versions of ourselves.

In this episode, we'll delve into the fascinating science of emotions and explore the seven basic emotions that are hypothesized by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp to be produced by separate neural circuits in the brain. According to the Panksepp, each of these emotions has a dedicated system in the subcortical regions of the brains of mammals. By activating these particular regions, a specific and intense emotional experience can be produced. In this video, I explain each of the seven systems, including their basic neuroanatomy and what happens when they're stimulated. From the RAGE system that triggers violent reactions to the PLAY system that's crucial for healthy childhood brain development, we explore the fascinating and complex world of emotions and how they play out in the brain. Do you feel exhausted by work or life in general? More specifically, do you lack a feeling of motivation and drive that you used to have? If so, you might be experiencing burnout. Burnout is incredibly common, with a 2018 Gallup poll reporting that 23% of employees in the US say they feel burned out at work all or most of the time (and I would guess this is higher post-Covid).
While motivation naturally ebbs and flows, when you have an ongoing lack of motivation combined with exhaustion, depression, and other negative emotions, it might mean that you are burned out and need to revitalize your motivation. Part of this might entail simple changes to your behaviors and habits. But it might also involve setting goals with the right level of challenge and, most importantly, goals that are deeply important to you.
In this episode, we’ll talk about motivation, including the role of dopamine and related brain systems; intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation; the role of personal autonomy, confidence, and connection with others (Self-Determination Theory); how our emotional state can affect motivation; and the impact of your environment on motivation.

We’ll be talking about the simple to implement principles from modern neuroscience that will revolutionize the way that you engage with the world and approach skill acquisition in your life. Most importantly, we’ll look at the process of automatization and how “thinking” can often get in the way when you start getting better at the motor skills that you are passionate about.

How does the brain control sleep? Why do our brains need sleep in the first place? What are the health benefits of sleep? Why do some animals sleep more than others? What are dreams and why do our brains generate them? Why is it so hard to fall asleep when you’re stressed or hungry? How did sleep evolve?
In this video, we will explore the amazing science of sleep. We’ll see how specific brain regions, particularly the hypothalamus and brainstem, form circuits that make us fall asleep, stay asleep, and eventually wake up. We’ll look at the two primary stages of sleep and how they differ. I’ll explain the intriguing idea that sleep is actually a default state of the brain and that our brains have to actively keep us awake.

Take a moment to feel what’s going on inside your body. Maybe your stomach is starting to feel hungry, or maybe it feels pleasantly full and satisfied. Maybe you don’t feel any specific area, but instead you sense a hum of life within you–your breath gently moving in and out and subtle tingles throughout your body. What’s amazing is that, while those feelings seem like they’re happening in your body, it’s not your body that’s actually feeling them! Instead, your brain is creating your experience of your body.
Your brain can produce a feeling in your body, even when there is no stimulation of any part of your body. This happens, for example, when you experience butterflies in your stomach when you’re anxious or stressed. Additionally, your brain can not only make you feel something in your body when it’s not really happening (such as stomach butterflies), but it can also interpret real feelings coming from your body in emotional terms.
All of this depends on your brain’s ability to sense, perceive, and model the internal physiological conditions of your body, also known as “interoception.” Understanding interoception can help you to regulate your emotions and experience less stress.

These days, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and distracted by the barrage of notifications, emails, and tasks that vie for our attention. It can be hard to stay focused and give our undivided attention to the things that truly matter. Rather than reflexively reacting to the chaos, we must take the time to pause, reflect, and make intentional decisions about how to use the power of our attention. We often take for granted our ability to take control of our attention, forgetting that the brain's attention system is limited and requires us to be mindful and intentional in how we use it. Attention is the cornerstone of our ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn, and each of us is the product of the information and experiences we've chosen to pay attention to throughout our lives. In this episode, we'll be exploring the neuroscience of attention, the strategies we can use to maximize our attention, and the potential impact of attention on our lives.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the future or the past, often at the expense of living in the present. As we talked about in the last episode, this kind of cognition is completely natural: it’s built into the brain’s default mode network. And while planning for the future, reviewing the past, and mind wandering are all important and healthy aspects of being human, they can also make us unhappy when they’re constantly taking us away from the present moment.
Fortunately, there is a simple, research-backed method of countering the default mode, bringing us back to the present, and providing several other distinct cognitive benefits at the same time: mindfulness meditation. As a personal anecdote, I (Andrew) have been practicing mindfulness meditation regularly for about five years, and I can say with confidence that it has radically improved my mind and my life. It’s one of the most important tools I’ve found for maintaining my own mental health.

What makes human cognition so much different from that of other animals? The short answer has to do with a single brain network: the default mode network (DMN). Humans are deliberative, able to flexibly combine the current moment with the past so that we can simulate and predict the future. We can remember things that occurred years and even decades ago and we can plan for life events that won't happen until well into our future. This allows us to build meaning and to develop identity and a sense of self. It allows us to build and navigate complex social environments and to maintain complicated long-term relationships. Modern neuroscience is showing that all of these incredible abilities are due to the expansion of a particular group of brain regions in humans that together make up what's collectively called the default mode network.

How does the human brain develop an addiction? The extremely high prevalence rates for disorders such as alcohol use disorder or drug use disorder (1 in 3 AUD lifetime prevalence, 1 in 10 DUD lifetime prevalence) suggests that addiction is not simply a disease but is instead a natural brain process that each and every one of us is susceptible to. The fascinating thing that is unraveling in the research is that the brain processes that lead to addiction are not drug or alcohol specific but instead are involved in every form of addiction (gambling, sex, shopping, technology... etc)

Feelings are extremely important indicators of our wellbeing, whether they’re purely physical internal sensations (like a stomach ache) or emotional feelings (like the upset stomach you might get before you give a big presentation). Interoception is the sense of the inside of the body, and it provides the basis for both types of feelings. In this video, we’ll see how bodily sensations are turned into emotional feelings in the brain, and vice versa. The most important brain region in this regard is the so-called “interoceptive cortex,” which spans the insular and anterior cingulate cortices, but many other brain regions are important as well.

Horror movies can subtly manipulate the human brain, causing us to feel fear when there is not actually any danger. Scary movies do this by stimulating our brain’s fear circuit. But that’s pretty obvious. The more important question is: Why do people voluntarily submit themselves to such a scary experience? Why do some people enjoy horror movies while others can’t stand it? How do horror movies take advantage of our brain’s design to make us simultaneously feel terrified while knowing that nothing bad is actually happening? This video addresses all of those questions. At the end, I describe some unintuitive benefits of watching scary movies.

In the brain, pleasure is generated by a handful of brain regions called, “hedonic hotspots.” If you were to stimulate these regions directly, you would likely feel pleasurable sensations. However, not all of the hedonic hotspots are the same–some generate the raw sensations of pleasure whereas others are responsible for consciously interpreting and elaborating on the raw pleasure produced by the other hotspots. How do your emotions influence your economic decisions? This video explores how sadness, disgust, fear, gratitude, and happiness influence our decisions, especially those around money. It also explains a couple strategies for regulating our emotions so we can make wiser financial decisions.
In general, happiness and gratitude make us more patient in delaying gratification. Fear makes all but the least risky (and therefore, least rewarding) outcomes appear threatening. Sadness makes us want to change our situation, leading us to buy or sell at disadvantageous prices. Disgust makes us want to sell what we’ve got, even if the price is too low, or simply not buy something even if the price is good.

Dogs have rich and complex minds. But since dogs can’t talk, we need scientists who can decode dog minds. So in this episode I interview Dr. Ellen Furlong, a scientist who studies dog psychology and the author of the course, “Decoding Dogs: Inside the Canine Mind,” which is available from Audible and the Great Courses.
Ellen Furlong is an Associate Professor in Psychology at her alma mater, Transylvania University, where she studied Mathematics. She subsequently earned her PhD in Psychology from The Ohio State University. Before joining the faculty at Transy, she taught at Illinois Wesleyan University and spent three-years as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University where she helped found the Canine Cognition Center, and studied rhesus monkeys at a research station on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico.
Ellen teaches courses on Animal Cognition and Dog Cognition and has team-taught travel courses on animal cognition and welfare with her father, a bioethicist. She has won several teaching awards, including, in 2018, the inaugural Most Influential Professor award at IWU.
Ellen directs a research group exploring cognition in dogs and zoo animals. She has published papers and presented work at academic conferences on chimpanzee, orangutan, and dog cognition. Ellen recently authored a textbook on learning entitled Learning and Behavior. Her works have been featured in numerous media outlets including, most recently an ABC Australia documentary, A Dog’s World.

In this episode I’m talking about neurotheology with Bryan Spoon, who is a pastor, chaplain, and neuroscience YouTuber who runs the channel @Neurotheology. “Neurotheology” is the branch of neuroscience that seeks to understand the relationship between the human brain and religion. I loved having this conversation with Bryan. Even though we differ on our religious views (I’m an atheist and he’s a Christian pastor), we had a fruitful and amicable discussion about neuroscience, mindfulness, spirituality, and the many approaches to living a good and satisfying life.
Bryan Spoon, is a Board Certified Chaplain through the Association of Professional Chaplains. He is also an ordained priest within the Episcopal Church, currently serving with his wife Elisabeth in Mexico City. After serving as a chaplain in three level one trauma hospital centers, he is now currently a doctoral candidate in practical theology at the University of Aberdeen’s Centre for Spirituality, Health and Disability.
He is the author of “Neuroscience and the Fruit of the Spirit,” host of the website spiritualneuroscience.com which focuses on the correlation of neuroscience with spirituality from scholarly, research, and diverse faith backgrounds, as well as host of the website christianneuroscience.com which features top-rated and diverse Christian neuroscience resources. He is a strong and vocal advocate that amid our spiritual differences, we all have much to learn and share with one another.

The cerebellum is important for movement and cognition. That might be a surprise, because for a while the cerebellum was thought to be solely involved in the coordination of bodily movements. While the cerebellum is undoubtedly crucial for coordination and accuracy of movement, it is important for emotional regulation and executive functions, as well as verbal, linguistic, and visuospatial abilities.

Cognitive science is a fascinating area of study that aims to understand how the mind works as an information processing machine. For anyone interested in neuroscience or psychology, it’s important to understand the basics of cognitive science. So in this week’s episode, I’m talking to cognitive scientist and YouTuber, Dr. Ryan Rhodes.
Ryan is Assistant Teaching Professor for the Rutgers University Center for Cognitive Science, where he teaches interdisciplinary courses on language, cognition, and the brain. He received a PhD in linguistics from the University of Delaware, where he worked as lab manager for Arild Hestvik’s psycholinguistics ERP lab, and an MA in linguistics from Fresno State, where he worked on the Chukchansi Yokuts language documentation project. His current work combines electrophysiological (EEG) and behavioral measures to investigate mental representations of linguistic structure, auditory prediction, and rule learning.
In addition to his work as an educator and scientist, Ryan is also the creator of two YouTube channels about cognitive science and linguistics. In this video, we mainly refer to his original channel, which is just called “Ryan Rhodes,” where he posts videos that serve as university-level introductory cognitive science lectures. His newer channel, called “Language of Mind,” where he creates shorter videos that dive into specific aspects of cognitive science and linguistics.

Human societies are a product of our evolution as a social species. While many scientists have focused on the negative side of our evolved social life–especially our violent tendencies–that’s only half the story. Physician and social scientist, Dr. Nicholas Christakis argues that we also have an evolved tendency toward forming good societies where people flourish. In this interview, Dr. Christakis and I discuss this and related ideas from his 2019 book, “Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of A Good Society.”

Nicholas A. Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH, is the Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science at Yale University. His work is in the fields of network science, biosocial science, and behavior genetics. He directs the Human Nature Lab and is the Co-Director of the Yale Institute for Network Science. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2006; the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2010; and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017.
Dr. Christakis is the author of over 200 articles and several books. His influential book, Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives, documented how social networks affect our lives and was translated into twenty foreign languages. In 2009, Christakis was named by Time magazine to their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2009 and in 2010, he was listed by Foreign Policy magazine in their annual list of Top 100 Global Thinkers.

Sense of Mind Podcast Episode 31 - Shame - with Joseph Burgo
Watch full video: https://youtu.be/8wpnL0gjKNE
Shame is an unpleasant emotion we have all experienced at one point or another. Most of us know it as the feeling associated with knowing that we’ve done something wrong–that our actions were not aligned with our values. In this way, as my interview guest Dr. Joseph Burgo argues, shame can be a positive emotion, because truly understanding why you feel ashamed can help you to grow to be the person you want to be. Moreover, he argues that shame is better thought of as the whole family of unpleasant self-conscious emotions, including guilt and simply feeling bad about yourself or who you are.
Joe Burgo has been practicing psychotherapy for nearly 40 years and currently works by Zoom with clients all over the world. He has also published a half dozen books, fiction and non-fiction, including most recently BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM: How Learning from Shame Helps Us to Grow.
In this interview, I speak with Dr. Burgo about shame from his unique perspective as a therapist.
Make sure to grab a copy of Dr. Burgo’s book, “Building Self-Esteem: How Learning from Shame Helps Us Grow” https://www.amazon.com/Building-Self-Esteem-Learning-Shame-Helps/dp/0997592028/
Note: This book also has an alternative title that I referred to in the video (“Shame: Free Yourself, Find Joy, and Build True Self-Esteem”) but I would urge you to buy the one linked above, because Dr. Burgo does not own the rights to this second, alternatively titled version (and therefore it will help him more if you purchase the one linked above!). However, if you want the audio version, it is only available as the alternative title (“Shame”).

Sense of Mind Podcast Episode 29 -Your brain’s alarm system: The Amygdala
Watch the full video here: https://youtu.be/fXuZpMiSGHk
The amygdala detects important features of the environment and it can trigger the fight or flight response. This brain region used to be thought of as the brain’s ‘fear center’ or sometimes as the emotional core of the brain, but in recent years neuroscientists have discovered that the amygdala’s function is more general. It now appears that the amygdala’s function is to detect important and relevant features of our sensory experience, and it activates most strongly when those features are unexpected. More specifically, the amygdala can be thought of as a prediction error detector which is sensitive to things that are biologically relevant and/or important for the task at hand.
This video explains how the amygdala works, including a discussion of amygdaloid nuclei anatomy, how the fight or flight response works and how the amygdala triggers it, how the amygdala can be “hijacked” and lead us to doing things we later regret, and how we can calm our amygdalae if we experience the amygdala hijack often.

Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 28 - Neuroplasticity
Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/q-iQGoxmRkM
“Neuroplasticity” refers to the fact that your brain can change its structure and function over time. Neuroplasticity is also sometimes called “brain plasticity,” or simply, “plasticity.” What this means is that you can change how your brain works, at least within certain constraints, such as genetic proclivities and the fundamentals of neurophysiology. You can learn valuable skills and facts. You can even train your brain to be happier, less anxious, and more resilient in the face of adversity.
All of this happens thanks to changes in the strength of connections among neurons, known as “synapses.” Your brain contains about 86 billion neurons, which are specialized biological cells that transmit, process, and receive information. Neurons can connect with hundreds of thousands of other neurons, and those connections can change over time. In this video, we will primarily focus on larger scale aspects of neuroplasticity, so if you want to learn about neurons, neurotransmission, or some of the molecular mechanisms behind neuroplasticity, I recommend my videos about the neurotransmitter molecule, glutamate (https://youtu.be/5J3LnfJGrM0).

How does your brain learn about and navigate the world? What brain areas are responsible for our ability to form mental maps of places and spaces? How are attention and memory implemented in the brain and how do they contribute to learning?
In this episode of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Artem Kirsanov, a YouTuber and neuroscience undergraduate who has produced a number of visually striking and deeply informative videos that answer the questions just posed. In addition to the basic science, Kirsanov has even more videos about strategies that allow you to learn just about anything more efficiently.
Artem is currently a 3rd year undergraduate student at Lomonosov Moscow State University, studying biophysics. His thesis research combines experimental & computational neuroscience, and it is dedicated to uncovering the mechanism of generation of theta rhythm in the hippocampus. He’s also involved in a project on building detailed computational models of interactions between neurons and astrocytes, as an attempt to understand the role of astrocytes in neuronal dynamics and information processing.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) allows us to engage in what scientists call “cognitive control” (also known as “executive functioning”) and it is crucial for our sense of self. This video explains what the PFC is, why this brain region’s properties make it well suited to cognitive control and the sense of self, and how each of the subdivisions of the prefrontal cortex contributes to these functions. Includes interview clips with neuroscientists David Badre (Brown University), Gregory Hickok (UC Irvine), and Taylor Guthrie (University of Oregon).

Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 25 -
The idea of scaling, in biology, refers to how a biological system responds to changes in its overall size. More specifically, the properties that characterize animals–such as their metabolic rate, heart rate, and average lifespan–are systematically related to the size of the animal. But how, in a precise quantitative sense, does such biological scaling manifest?
In this episode of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Dr. Geoffrey West about these and other ideas from his 2017 book, “Scale: The Universal Laws of Growth, Innovation, Sustainability, and the Pace of Life in Organisms, Cities, Economies, and Companies”
Watch the video episode here: https://youtu.be/sHXoKURiPfc
Geoffrey West is Distinguished Professor and former President of the Santa Fe Institute and an Associate Senior Fellow of Oxford University’s Green-Templeton College. He obtained his BA from Cambridge in 1961 and PhD from Stanford in 1966 where he was later on the faculty. For many years he ran high energy physics at Los Alamos National Laboratory. West is a theoretical physicist whose primary interests have been in fundamental questions ranging across physics, biology and the social sciences. His work is motivated by the search for unifying principles and simplicity underlying complexity. His research includes metabolism, growth, aging & death, sleep, cancer, ecosystems, rates of growth & innovation, and the accelerating pace of life. Most recently he has been developing a science of cities and companies, including the challenge of long-term global sustainability. West has lectured worldwide at many high profile events including Davos and TED. He has received many awards and his work featured in numerous publications, podcasts and TV productions including New York Times, Financial Times, Time, The Economist, Le Monde and Scientific American, and participated in television productions including Nova, National Geographic and the BBC. His work was selected as a breakthrough idea by the Harvard Business Review in 2006, and in 2007 he was on Time magazine's list of "100 Most Influential People in the World".

Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 24 -
Understanding social neuroscience requires understanding the neuroscience of the self. That’s because our social interactions are deeply intertwined with how we understand ourselves, our goals, needs, desires, and dreads. Social cognitive neuroscience, one field that studies the brain in social circumstances, has discovered much regarding how our brains process information about ourselves and others.
In this episode of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Taylor Guthrie, the creator of one of my favorite YouTube channels, @The Cellular Republic (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUNqseoOq5DfzwCRI-7ZAow).
There, Taylor provides university-level lectures on social neuroscience as well as shorter videos that provide insight into other aspects of neuroscience.
Taylor Guthrie is a PhD student at the University of Oregon where his main focus of study is social neuroscience. He is particularly interested in how our brains begin to represent social information in more similar ways to each other as we form close relationships with one another. His work explores the nature of the self at a neural level and seeks to uncover the ways in which the brain separates information about the self from information that is used to represent the various other people around us. He uses MRI and computational analysis methods to explore these various processes.

Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 23 -
Spikes are action potentials–or the firing of neurons, while dark neurons indicate how rare such events really are in the human brain. That is, when we picture a brain, we sometimes imagine it flooded with action potentials, a hundred billion neurons all activating nearly simultaneously. The reality is that there are far fewer neurons active at any given time. Dr. Mark Humphries, author of the 2021 book, “The Spike: An Epic Journey Through the Brain in 2.1 Seconds,” has dubbed this phenomenon “the dark neuron problem.”
In this episode of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Dr. Humphries about this and a few other ideas from “The Spike.”
Mark Humphries is a computational neuroscientist and writer. His lab at the University of Nottingham, UK, researches how groups of neurons collectively encode information about the past, present, or future, in order to guide behaviour. Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 22 - The Evolution of the Brain
Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/j_ldDirCCns
The evolution of the brain began in relatively simple creatures, possibly for the purpose of coordinating digestion and other basic physiological processes. Hundreds of millions of years later, the brain evolved into the modern versions we see across the animal kingdom today. Yet, some may have changed more than others over that time. For example, scientists believe that humans and all other mammals evolved from fish, so by looking at the differences between human and fish brains, we can infer some of the evolutionary changes that occurred over those ~370 million years. Much of what makes our human brains unique appears to be in the cerebral cortex, though other brain structures are no doubt important in what makes us human. Finally, many of the quirks of our behavior and mental life, especially those surrounding sex and sex differences, can be explained partly by our evolutionary history.
This video is a brief exploration of brain evolution. It addresses questions like, Why did the brain evolve? How did the brain change over evolutionary time? What makes the human brain unique? And what vestiges of evolution remain hidden in our modern minds?
However, this video is ultimately incomplete. There are so many aspects of both brain and human evolution that I did not mention here or which I did not cover in detail. If you want to know more about this topic, I encourage you to check out the books, articles, and studies cited on YouTube.

❓ Do you consider yourself spiritual? ❓
The neuroscience of spirituality and religious experience is a fascinating subject. In this episode, I interview Dr. Andrew Newberg about the brain, spirituality, and religion. Even if you’re not particularly spiritual or if, like me, you don’t believe in god, spirits, the soul, or the afterlife, it’s still fascinating to understand that the brain is naturally wired for profound experiences and what effect they have on our health and wellbeing. In this episode, we primarily discuss his 2012 Teaching Company Course, “The Spiritual Brain: Science and Religious Experience.” Check out the full episode (link in bio).
Andrew B. Newberg, M.D. is currently the Research Director at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia. He is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nuclear Medicine. He has actively pursued a number of neuroimaging research projects which have included the study of aging and dementia, epilepsy, and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Newberg has been particularly involved in the study of mystical and religious experiences, a field referred to as “neurotheology”. He has published over 250 peer reviewed articles and chapters on brain function, brain imaging, and the study of religious and mystical experiences. He has published 12 books which have been translated into 17 different languages. He was listed as one of the 30 Most Influential Neuroscientists Alive Today by the Online Psychology Degree Guide.

Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 20 -
❓ Have you heard of mirror neurons? ❓
Mirror neurons are a special type of brain cell that were once thought to explain the brain basis of language and that of our understanding of the actions of other people, or “action understanding.” However, between the late 1990s and early 2010s, neuroscientist Gregory Hickok crafted a devastating argument against these claims, culminating in his 2014 book “The Myth of Mirror Neurons: The Real Neuroscience of Communication and Cognition.” (WW. Norton and Co.) His critiques contributed to a lively debate on the topic of mirror neurons, language, and action understanding.
So what are mirror neurons? In this episode of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Dr. Gregory Hickok about his book as well as a sophisticated dual stream model of speech and language processing in the brain, which he created with neuroscientist David Poeppel.
Dr. Hickok’s research focuses on the neurobiology of language, speech, and hearing with application to understanding the nature of acquired language disorders (aphasia). He has published over 190 scientific papers and book chapters and edited several book volumes on the neurobiology of language and hearing. His research uses a multi-method approach including functional MRI, electrocorticography, neuropsychology, and computational modeling, and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for the last three decades. Dr. Hickok was the inaugural Chair of the Society for the Neurobiology, founding director of UC Irvine’s Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Center for Language Science, and Editor-in-Chief of Psychonomic Bulletin & Review from 2014-2019. Dr. Hickok received his Ph.D. in Psychology and Linguistics at Brandeis University in 1991 and did postdoctoral training in Cognitive Neuroscience at MIT and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He joined the faculty at UC Irvine in 1996 where he is currently Professor of Cognitive Sciences and Language Science.

Executive function is a set of mental skills that we humans use to plan, hold information in working memory, and generally get things done. Collectively, these are often referred to as “cognitive control,” and they go a long way in explaining what makes humans unique in the animal kingdom. Not other animals can plan in the way we do, thinking decades ahead and making sacrifices now for that far off future.
So how does executive function work? In this episode of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Dr. David Badre, a cognitive neuroscientist and the author of this 2020 book, On Task: How Our Brain Gets Things Done, (2020, PRinceton University Press) which is all about cognitive control.
David Badre is Professor of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University, where he is also on the faculty of the Carney Institute for Brain Science. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He received his PhD from MIT and did his postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley before joining Brown as faculty in 2008. His laboratory studies the neuroscience of cognitive control and executive function.

Thinking Tools Podcast Episode 17 -
Nature vs nurture. Genes vs environment. DNA vs life experience. What makes us who we are? InEpisode 17 of the Thinking Tools Podcast, I speak with Dr. Robert Plomin about his 2018 book, “Blueprint: How DNA Makes Us Who We Are.” Dr. Plomin is Professor in Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London.
He has published more than 900 papers and is the author of the major textbook in the field as well as a dozen other books. He has received lifetime research achievement awards from all the major societies in the behavioral sciences, as well as being made Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, British Academy, American Academy of Political and Social Science, and Academy of Medical Sciences (UK). In 2021, he received the Grawemeyer Award for Psychology.
After 50 years of research, he has come to the view that inherited DNA differences are the major systematic force that makes us who we are as individuals – our mental health and illness, our personality and our cognitive abilities and disabilities. The environment is important, but it works completely different from the way we thought it worked. The DNA revolution has made it possible to use DNA to predict our psychological problems and promise from birth. These advances in genetic research call for a radical rethink about what makes us who we are, with sweeping, and no doubt controversial, implications for the way we think about parenting, education and the events that shape our lives. This is the theme of his book, Blueprint: How DNA Makes Us Who We Are (Allen Lane, 2018; Penguin Press, 2019).
