The government has unveiled its plan to reduce net overseas migration to 225,000 by 2028 in line with forecasts from the May budget. Many of the most significant changes relate to international students, working holiday makers and visitor visas. Hundreds of people at the Whyalla steelworks in South Australia are expected to lose their jobs, following a decision to permanently shut down its blast furnace. Three MPs have launched a protest in Canberra over the government's plans to cut private health insurance rebates for retirees, in order to supplement its aged care spending budget. Mitsunori Chiba's journey to the top of the bench press world began just six years ago, shortly after he arrived in Australia on a working holiday visa. A prolific songwriter and renowned philanthropist, she's being remembered not just for her music but her charitable endeavours, including her Imagination Library. In a career spanning decades, she had 10 Grammy wins from 55 nominations, the third-most nominated woman in Grammy history. Launched from scratch in 2018, Matsuri Brisbane has grown into an event that now attracts around 30,000 visitors. A landmark trial in the United States is putting the relationship between children and social media under renewed scrutiny. Twenty-nine US states are taking on Meta, alleging the technology giant designed features on Facebook and Instagram to keep young users engaged, despite risks to their well-being. Meta strongly rejects allegations its platforms were designed to addict or harm children and says it has spent years developing safeguards for younger users. Emily Molinero, with Japanese and Australian roots, was born and raised in Yokohama, Japan. Having spent her life in Japan up to university, she used to feel self-conscious about not being able to speak English well, but she now works as an interpreter and translator in Melbourne. The art project "When You Call My Name" honours the memory of 208 Japanese civilians buried at the Japanese War Cemetery in Cowra, New South Wales. Following an exhibition at the Australian National University in Canberra last year, the project will be presented again at Murdoch University in Perth on 29 August, marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan. We revisit our interviews with three people involved in the project, including one of its key figures, Mayu Kanamori.
