Today’s episode is the first one within our new rubric: Green Careers. We want to talk to people that are making a positive impact in their professional lives and ask them for tips and tricks so you get an idea what kind of green jobs exist. This episode of In Retrospect will be an early episode on the US midterm elections at the end of this year. We especially want to focus on the developments in the Republican Party and the rise of Trumpism in the party. Ever since Donald Trump won the Republican primary elections in the runup to the 2016 presidential elections, he has slowly taken grip on every aspect of the Republican Party. It is getting harder and harder to voice opposing opinions in the party, forcing most Republicans to continue defending the ‘Big Lie’ that the 2020 presidential election was lost unfairly due to fraud at the voting process. During this episode we will discuss the impacts of Trumpism on the Republican Party, and on American democracy and its institutions as a whole. We relate this to the Midterm elections, and discuss the chances of Republican success during these elections. 

We have interviewed Dr. G.H.J. Baarssen to discuss these topics with us. Dr. Baarssen is a lecturer at Leiden Univerisity, and teaches among other courses Politics of North America & History of North America. As an expert on American politics, he has also won the Obama Dissertation Prize in 2017.

In this episode, Veerle & Elize speak with Alerk Ablikim, a 22-year-old Uyghur activist who was born in East Turkestan and fled to the Netherlands at the age of 8. We speak about his experience coming to the Netherlands, the situation in the west of China, and how the Uyghur diaspora in the Netherlands, as well as he personally, still experience intimidation and pressure from China's long arm even after having fled. We also extensively discuss what we can do to help the Uyghurs and other oppressed groups and the effectiveness of previous efforts. What can and should the Dutch government do to help the Uyghur community in the Netherlands? Can we explain the Dutch government's behavior towards China? What can we personally do to help the Uyghur community here and abroad? These questions and more will be answered in this interview.

Matthew and David delve into the ongoing Kosovo-Serbia dispute on the newest episode of the Now World. They interviewed Leiden University lecturer Shpend Kursani who has worked for the Kosovar Institute for Policy Research and Development. More generally, his research focus has been on relations between Kosovo and Serbia; the Western Balkans regional affairs; as well as on EU, Foreign and Security Affairs.

In this episode, Kosovo-Serbia relations are questioned and relativized, while still underlining the particularity of the situation. The concept of sovereignty is discussed, showing its counteracting nature with different international actors involved. In addition, this episode will give some interesting insights on historical and present arguments, giving a rounded viewpoint.

University and campus culture has always been a center of freedom of expression and social experiments and which consequently often influenced the rest of society with progressive change as a result. However, some may argue the current wave of wokeness across certain campuses has actually halted this position as “liberal safe haven” because equality or equity is seen as more important. Furthermore, is academic freedom or even freedom of speech in general in danger? 

In this episode of In Retrospect we interview Dr. Jeffrey Fynn-Paul, who is an economist, historian and last but not least lecturer at our program of International Studies. Dr Fynn-Paul will analyze these movements on campus/in society and the (mis-)interpretation of history that led to the current situation. We will also discuss his involvement in History Reclaimed, an initiative by various other scholars and him promoting a balanced view of history, which should not be misused for propaganda purposes. In this podcast episode, Velislava and Elize interview Vasileios Karakasis, lecturer at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, specialised in Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus dispute. They discuss the history and nature of the ongoing dispute on Cyprus, the global significance of the issue, the role of (inter)national actors such as the United Nations, but also the interference of many different states such as Turkey, the United Kingdom and Greece. Most importantly, they discuss the implications of the dispute for both Greek-Cypriots and the Turkish-Cypriots and the future of the dispute. Will it be settled, and if so, what will the politics of the island look like in the future? 

All of these questions will be answered in this interesting conversation between Vasileios, who has done extensive research on the topic, and Velislava, who has grown up on the island and experienced the dispute first handedly.

Anne  and Paul are joined by Stijn Gabriël, who calls from the International  Organisation for Migration in Niger. On Friday the 9th of April 2021, Radi8 Radio collaborated with the East Asia committee in a livestream with Dr. Casper Wits; expert in Chinese foreign relations and our beloved lecturer in the courses of History and Politics of East Asia. We sat down with him for an interactive conversation about the Uyghur crisis and its implications for China's foreign policy and its role in the international realm. We also extensively discuss the role of Europe in this crisis and how increasing economic entanglement and China's Belt & Road Initiative plays a crucial role in it.

It then raises the question: Can we still appreciate the art created by people convicted of sexual assault?

In the light of International Mine Awareness Day, Ruihan & Elize interview Lala and Kateryna from Minemark, an NGO that aims to educate children and youngsters in high risk areas about the dangers of landmines, cluster ammunitions and other dangerous remnants of war. They speak about how raising awareness is crucial and about their projects in Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They also discussed about how it is to work at a small NGO and how their impacts can still be of significance. 

Today, March 17th, the Dutch population will vote again for the national elections. In this last of episode of three election episodes, Radi8 Radio will interview CDA politician Pauline Maat. CDA presents itself as a party in the middle of the political spectrum, willing to cooperate with both left and right. Romeck will interview Ms. Maat, electable on the national election ballot and representative in the Haarlemmermeer municipality council, about CDA's plans regarding the future of The Netherlands. In this episode, Thomas, Velly, and Lingjia interview Amber Cornelissen, a candidate from JONG, a new political party that focuses on youth issues and representation in politics. They discuss the party's platform and the current state of Dutch political issues facing the youth, as well as how young people can become engaged in politics.
